Chapter 3

POV: Lorenzo

Inside the grand study of the Moretti manor, sunlight filtered through leaded glass, casting geometric shadows over velvet jeweler trays scattered across the mahogany desk.

Lorenzo stood behind the desk, holding a diamond-encrusted choker against Gia’s throat. Gia sat perched on the arm of his leather chair, tilting her chin up with a soft, pleased smile.

"The emeralds suited Vivian," Lorenzo said, adjusting the clasp. "But platinum and diamonds belong on you. It makes you look delicate."

"Thank you, Lorenzo," Gia murmured, touching the cold stones. "I just hope Vivian won't be angry when she finds out you gave me the vault collection..."

Before Lorenzo could answer, the heavy oak doors banged open with a deafening crash.

Matteo, the syndicate's chief financial officer, stumbled into the room. His tie was crooked, his expensive shirt soaked through with sweat, and his hands shook so violently that the tablet in his grip nearly slipped to the hardwood floor.

"Don Lorenzo!" Matteo gasped, his voice cracking with sheer panic. "We have a catastrophic collapse. Every offshore liquidity pool in Zurich, Grand Cayman, and Liechtenstein just executed an emergency capital recall. Our primary operating accounts are reading zero!"

Lorenzo frowned, his tone dismissive. "Calm down, Matteo. It’s an administrative error from the attack last night. Call the Swiss desk and have them reset the clearing codes."

"You don't understand!" Matteo cried, slamming the tablet onto the desk. "It’s not an error! It’s an asset reclamation! And that's not all—thirty of our primary maritime arms transports have been detained simultaneously. Gibraltar, Rotterdam, Panama, Singapore. Port authorities intercepted every single vessel at customs under flag and registration violations! We are completely locked out of the major ports!"

Lorenzo’s face darkened with disbelief. "That's impossible. Those routes have belonged to the Moretti family for fifty years—"

POV: Vivian

"They never belonged to you, Lorenzo."

My voice cut through the panicked air of the study like a razor.

I pushed the double doors wide and walked into the room.

I had stripped away the torn emerald silk and the scent of ash. Now, I wore a tailored three-piece black suit, crisp and sharp against my shoulders. My dark hair was pulled back into a sleek, severe ponytail, and my uninjured right hand rested lightly in the pocket of my slacks.

Behind me marched twelve international trust attorneys and notaries in matching dark suits, carrying thick leather document portfolios, flanked by eight private security operatives wearing the silver crest of the De Rossi family.

Lorenzo looked up, his jaw clenching as his eyes took in my appearance.

"Vivian?" he snarled, slamming his palm against the mahogany desk. "What the hell is the meaning of this circus? Matteo just told me our syndicate is facing an operational crisis, and you walk in here playing dress-up with an armed retinue? Are you still throwing a childish tantrum because I prioritized Gia's medical emergency last night?"

He stepped around the desk, his voice rising in righteous anger.

"You're a soldier, Vivian. Act like one. Stop making a fool of yourself in front of the staff and get these strangers out of my house right now!"

I didn't blink. I didn't raise my voice.

I stepped forward, pulled a heavy folder bound with red wax and official Swiss federal seals from my lead notary, and threw it straight into Lorenzo’s face.

The sharp paper corners struck his cheekbone, slicing a thin red line near his eye before scattering across his tailored vest and raining down onto the floor.

"Read it," I said coldly. "Then tell me whose house you're standing in."

Lorenzo flinched from the impact, wiping a drop of blood from his cheek with trembling fingers. His eyes darted to the top sheet resting on his desk.

*Notice of Engagement Termination and Immediate Asset Reclamation.*

"What is this nonsense?" Lorenzo spat, though a flicker of unease crossed his eyes as he read the bold header. "A clawback petition? For twelve billion dollars?"

"Twelve point four billion," I corrected him, my voice steady and completely devoid of warmth. "Every cargo liner, every offshore holding shell, every deep-water dock permit, and every laundering pipeline you used to build your so-called empire didn't come from your father. They were backed entirely by the private trusts of the De Rossi family. My mother’s inheritance."

Lorenzo stared at me, his face draining of color. "That's a lie. The Moretti name built this city."

"The Moretti name was drowning in nine-figure debts until I signed over my mother’s private maritime routes five years ago," I said, taking another step toward him. "I gave you access because I believed you were building a future for us. But the contracts were always held under my sole signature. You were merely an authorized operator."

I gestured to the lead notary, who stepped forward and presented an encrypted digital terminal.

"As of eight o'clock this morning," I continued, "my power of attorney has been permanently revoked. Every credit facility linked to my collateral has been terminated, and the collateral has reverted to my personal trusts. Every port authority has been notified that your vessels are operating without valid leases. You don't own the ships, Lorenzo. You don't own the routes. You don't even own the chair you're standing next to."

Gia’s face went white. She scrambled off the chair, rushing over to Lorenzo’s side and gripping his arm tightly, the oversized signet ring sliding awkwardly on her slender finger.

"Vivian, how could you be so cruel?" Gia wailed, tears instantly flooding her eyes as she looked at me with righteous outrage. "Lorenzo’s father and your family arranged this bond years ago! You gave your word to support the family through thick and thin. How can you destroy Lorenzo’s entire life just because you're jealous that he cared for me when I was sick? You're being completely selfish!"

I turned my head and looked directly at Gia.

She stepped back slightly, but her chin remained tilted up, banking on Lorenzo’s protection to shield her.

I didn't argue. I didn't waste a single breath on words.

My right arm swung forward in a clean, vicious arc.

*Crack!*

The back of my hand caught Gia squarely across the jaw with the full force of my body behind it.

The impact cracked like a gunshot through the silent study. Gia was knocked clean off her feet, screaming as she crashed hard into a side table. An antique porcelain vase toppled over, shattering into sharp white shards around her as she collapsed onto the floor, blood pouring from her split lip.

"Gia!" Lorenzo shouted in horror.

"Open your mouth in front of me again," I said, looking down at Gia with eyes as cold as a frozen lake, "and I won't use an open hand."

Gia curled into a ball among the broken porcelain, sobbing hysterically and clutching her bleeding face, too terrified to meet my gaze.

Lorenzo looked between Gia on the floor and the legal documents scattered across his desk. His phone began buzzing relentlessly on the table—calls from syndicate lieutenants, bank directors, and port captains, all flashing red on the screen.

The reality finally crashed down on him.

The Moretti family wasn't just losing an ally. They were bankrupt. Disarmed. Vulnerable to every rival family in the country.

"Vivian..." Lorenzo’s voice broke, stripped entirely of its former arrogance. His knees buckled slightly, the pride draining from his posture until he looked small behind the massive desk. "Wait. Vivian, please. We can talk about this. We’ve been together five years. You built this with me. You can't just tear it all down over one mistake!"

He scrambled forward, dropping to one knee beside the desk, reaching out with desperate, trembling hands to grab the hem of my trousers.

"Vivian, don't do this to me!" he pleaded, his voice cracking. "I'll take the ring back from Gia. I'll announce our wedding tomorrow. Just sign the release forms. Please!"

I looked down at his outstretched hand.

I lifted my right foot and brought the hard leather sole of my boot down directly onto his fingers.

I ground my heel into his knuckles, pressing down until the bones cracked beneath the pressure.

Lorenzo let out a sharp, choked gasp of agony, curling in on himself as he clutched his crushed hand to his chest.

"You took five years of my life, Lorenzo," I said, stepping past him toward the exit. "Be grateful I left you with your pulse."

I walked out of the manor without looking back once, my security detail falling into formation behind me.

Outside, a heavy autumn rain was falling over the estate’s cobblestone driveway, washing away the grey morning light.

Parked directly in front of the grand entrance sat a sleek, armored black Maybach, its engine idling with a low, predatory rumble.

As I walked down the marble steps into the rain, the rear passenger window rolled down smoothly.

Dante Falcone sat inside, a crystal glass of bourbon in his hand and a cold, dangerous smile playing on his lips. His sharp grey eyes locked onto mine through the falling mist.

"Lend me all your shipping routes," Dante said, his deep voice carrying through the rain, "and I'll grind the Moretti family to dust for you. Deal, former bride-to-be?"
