You Left Me to Die, Now Call Me Your Boss's Wife Chapter 1

I spent five years bleeding in the shadows so Lorenzo Moretti could wear his bloody crown. On our fifth anniversary, when rival cartel hitmen breached the ballroom with loaded automatic rifles, I reached for his hand. He slapped it away. Without a single glance back, he scooped up Gia—his trembling, fragile childhood sweetheart—and ran for the armored vault.

"Stay there, Vivian! Draw their fire! You're a Mafia daughter, you can handle it!" he barked, slamming and locking the titanium door from the inside, leaving me to bleed.

He thought I was his loyal little shield who would crawl back begging. He forgot one tiny detail: every bullet, every dock, and every dollar his syndicate owned bore my signature.

Three days later, Lorenzo watched in horror as I walked into the Five Families Gala, took a seat on the lap of the deadliest Don in North America, and smiled: "Down on your knees, Lorenzo. Address me as your King's woman."

POV: Vivian

The custom emerald gown weighed heavily against my ribs, corseted so tight that every breath felt like a negotiation.

Around us, crystal chandeliers cast a golden glow over three hundred guests gathered on the penthouse floor. Men in tailored tuxedos and women draped in diamonds raised their flutes of vintage Dom Pérignon, watching the spectacle unfold on the elevated platform.

Lorenzo stepped toward me. His dark hair was combed back with sleek perfection, his posture radiating the cold authority of an heir who owned half the city’s underground.

He reached into his breast pocket and produced an antique velvet box. Inside rested the Moretti family signet ring, heavy platinum set with a flawless black diamond.

A sudden, sharp cramp twisted through my stomach. The pain was nauseating, but I forced my spine straight and kept my smile pinned in place. For five years, I had bled in the shadows to build his empire, burying my weaknesses so he could stand untouchable. Tonight was about sealing that contract in front of the syndicate elders.

Lorenzo took my left hand. His fingers were steady, his touch smooth.

"Five years of loyalty, Vivian," he said, his deep voice carrying across the silent hall through the lapel mic. "You have stood by me through every war. Tonight, I give you the ring that commands our bloodline. To the only woman who will ever rule at my side. Until death."

A murmur of approval rippled through the elders.

"Always, Lorenzo," I replied smoothly, slipping the cold platinum onto my finger.

Then the heavy oak doors of the ballroom blew apart.

The blast shattered every window facing the skyline. Concrete dust and shredded silk erupted across the room as the concussive force knocked guests to the floor. Screams echoed off the marble walls before the first spray of automatic gunfire tore through the ceiling.

Mercenaries in grey tactical gear surged through the smoking entrance, weapons raised and firing in rhythmic bursts.

Instinct took over. I dropped behind an overturned banquet table, sweeping the heavy hem of my gown back to draw the compact pistol strapped to my inner thigh.

Beside me, Lorenzo pulled his custom nine-millimeter from his jacket.

"West corridor," I yelled over the deafening roar of gunfire. "We bottleneck them at the service stairs and flank—"

Lorenzo didn’t look at me. His gaze cut straight across the ruined ballroom, locking onto a distant corner near the collapsed ice sculpture.

Gia was huddled against a marble pillar. Her sheer white dress was ruined with soot, her hands clutching her throat as she let out a piercing shriek.

"Lorenzo!" she wailed, tears carving lines through her makeup.

Lorenzo shoved me hard into the edge of the mahogany table, nearly sending my gun skidding across the slick floor. He did not check to see if I caught my balance. Without a single glance back, he broke into a sprint, heading straight toward the girl.

"Lorenzo, stay low!" I shouted, but my voice was swallowed by the chatter of rifles.

Two mercenaries turned toward his movement. I leaned out from cover and squeezed the trigger twice, dropping the first shooter before he could line up a shot on Lorenzo’s back. A stray round clipped the shoulder of my gown, ripping through silk and grazing my left arm. Warm blood immediately soaked the fabric, stinging like a branding iron.

Lorenzo reached Gia, scooping her up into his arms. Gia threw her arms around his neck, sobbing that her ankle was broken.

He didn't fire a single covering shot. He just turned and carried her toward the private hallway at the rear of the penthouse.

That hallway led to only one place: the panic vault. A reinforced safe room built with foot-thick titanium plating and ten layers of ballistic glass.

I fired three rounds to keep the advancing squad pinned behind the ruined bar, then scrambled after them. Blood dripped down my left wrist, making my grip slippery. My stomach cramp flared again, violent and sickening, but adrenaline pushed me through the doorway.

"Lorenzo! Hold the door!" I called out, rounding the final turn of the hallway.

Ahead of me, Lorenzo carried Gia past the threshold of the safe room.

I was ten feet away. Five feet.

I reached out to grab the heavy steel frame.

*Clack.*

The hydraulic locking system engaged with a heavy hiss of compressed air. The massive door snapped shut, the magnetic deadbolts sliding into place with a deafening finality.

I slammed my palms against the thick, transparent ballistic barrier.

"Lorenzo!" I banged on the glass, my blood smearing across the clean surface. "Let me in! Override the lockdown!"

On the other side of the glass, Lorenzo stood under the sterile white lights of the vault. Gia sat on the leather bench behind him, coughing softly, her arms wrapped around her knees.

Lorenzo looked at me through the glass. His expression was completely devoid of panic, stripped bare to reveal an icy, pragmatic detachment.

He picked up the wall-mounted intercom microphone. His voice came through the small speaker above the door frame, clear and steady.

"Draw them toward the east stairwell, Vivian."

I stared at him, my breath catching in my throat. "What?"

"You have tactical training," Lorenzo said, his tone flat, reasonable, and utterly merciless. "You know how to survive a sweep. Gia has severe asthma. If the smoke from the blast reaches this room, she won't survive the panic. I can't risk the door cycling open again."

"Lorenzo, I'm out of ammunition," I said, my voice shaking with sudden disbelief. "There are at least six armed men in the hall."

"You can lose them in the service ducts," he replied without a flicker of hesitation. "You're strong, Vivian. You always make it out."

He hung up the intercom.

Through the glass, I watched him turn his back on me. He walked over to the bench, sank down on one knee in front of Gia, and cupped her tear-streaked face in his hands. He leaned forward and placed a soft, lingering kiss on her forehead, murmuring gentle words to calm her trembling.

He had never looked at me with that kind of tenderness in five years.

Something inside me snapped. The suffocating pain in my stomach, the burn of the bullet graze, the lingering attachment from five years of shared blood and ambition—all of it turned dead and cold.

A heavy silence settled over my chest, sharp as an executioner's blade.

Heavy combat boots rounded the corner of the corridor behind me.

I turned around slowly, letting my empty gun rest against my side. Four mercenaries in tactical vests raised their rifles, lasers painting red dots across my chest and forehead.

I didn't raise my hands. I just stared at them with empty eyes.

Before the lead shooter could pull the trigger, three suppressed gunshots cracked from the far end of the hall.

The lead mercenary dropped instantly, a clean hole through his visor. Two more muffled pops followed in rapid succession. The remaining men collapsed to the marble floor in heaps of limp armor and crimson spray.

The entire team had been eliminated in under four seconds.

Down the long hallway, a line of men dressed in tailored black suits and dark leather gloves advanced, clearing the corners with lethal, practiced precision.

Behind them walked a tall, imposing figure. A bodyguard held a wide black umbrella over him, shielding his charcoal wool coat from the fine dust raining down from the shattered ceiling.

The umbrella tilted upward.

Dante Falcone stepped over the bodies. The undisputed godfather of the northern syndicates looked entirely unbothered by the massacre, his silver-streaked dark hair immaculate and his sharp grey eyes fixed entirely on me.

He stopped two paces away, glancing briefly at the blood on my arm, then at the locked vault door behind me where Lorenzo was now staring out in sheer terror.

Dante pulled a gold lighter from his pocket with a gloved hand and sparked the flame, lighting the dark wrapper of a hand-rolled cigar.

He exhaled a thin stream of pale smoke into the chilled air, then crouched down until his gaze was level with mine.

"Little cat," Dante said, his voice a low, gravelly purr that cut through the silence. "The man you chose seems eager to send you to God."
