Chapter 3

POV: Liam Langford

The steering wheel tore at my palms as the car snapped sideways through Turn 9.

Tire smoke billowed into the cockpit. The rear axle slid completely out of control, the chassis violently shuddering as the carbon-fiber floor scraped the curb. I fought the snap with everything in my arms, wrestling the machine back toward the racing line before it spun into the gravel trap.

"Box, Liam, box!" Marcus's voice crackled through my helmet speakers, tight with panic. "Telemetry shows rear tire degradation is forty percent higher than expected! Your entry speed dropped twenty miles an hour!"

"What the hell is wrong with this piece of junk?" I roared into the team radio, my lungs burning under the g-forces. "The front end won't bite on turn-in, and the throttle lag is killing me on corner exit! Did you idiots grease the rear wing? Fix this fucking car!"

For three years, the car had felt like an extension of my own body. Every time I flicked the wheel, the chassis balance had responded seamlessly, gluing the tires to the asphalt. Now, the machine felt like a dead weight. Every corner was a fight for survival, and we were only twenty minutes into the first free practice session at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya.

I swerved into the pit lane, braking hard before our garage stall.

Before the mechanics could even jack up the chassis, I ripped off my steering wheel and slammed it onto the monocoque. I shoved my way out of the cockpit, tearing off my helmet and balaclava as sweat poured into my eyes.

"Explain this!" I shouted, pointing a gloved finger at Marcus Davies. "I’m two and a half seconds off Ferrari’s pace! Two and a half seconds! I won Monaco five days ago, and now you hand me an unsteerable brick?"

Marcus looked down at his shoes, unable to meet my gaze.

Beside him stood Dave, our veteran chief mechanic who had worked in racing for thirty years. Dave wiped his grease-blackened hands on a rag, his face pale and grim.

"It’s not the hardware, Liam," Dave said quietly.

"Then what is it?" I snapped, stepping into his face. "Are you telling me I suddenly forgot how to drive?"

"The car you drove in Monaco didn't rely on the standard development package," Dave said, his voice rising over the whine of air guns down the pit lane. "Every setup model, every brake-migration target, every energy-deployment recommendation—none of it came from the standard package. Sierra built it. She sat in that damp container during every single practice session, running independent telemetry models and sending us the settings that matched your driving habits in real time."

A cold weight dropped into my chest. "What did you say?"

"She wasn't some glorified assistant who fetched your protein shakes," Dave yelled, his eyes flashing with raw frustration. "She was a god-tier engineer! She built custom telemetry models from scratch that masked every single aerodynamic flaw in this chassis! The moment Protocol Zero revoked her licenses, legal made us strip out every tool built on her IP, and this car went back to base factory specs. Without her code, this car is a three-million-dollar paperweight!"

The garage went dead silent. Mechanics stopped working on the spare wings, their eyes darting between me and the chassis.

My blood ran hot with humiliation.

"Bullshit!" I barked, refusing to let the panic show. "She didn't build anything! She was just running the diagnostic tools Arrow Racing bought for her! She’s a mechanic's kid with a laptop, not a genius!"

"Liam is right," Helena's voice cut in smoothly from the garage entrance.

My mother walked in, flawless in an ivory silk blouse, accompanied by Chloe, who wore oversized designer sunglasses and an Arrow VIP pass.

"Let’s not lose our heads over basic software," Helena said, sneering at Dave. "Arrow Racing has a two-hundred-million-dollar operating budget. If one disgruntled girl deletes her files, we simply hire a world-class team of German engineers to write better ones."

"Exactly," Chloe chimed in, stepping up and placing a manicured hand on my damp racing suit. "Don't stress over this, Liam. My family owns major stakes in three European tech conglomerates. I already called our lead software director in Paris. We'll inject twenty million euros into your development program by Monday."

Confidence surged back into my veins. I looked at Dave with cold contempt.

"You hear that?" I said. "Sierra thought she could hold this team hostage by locking a few computer files. She’s replaceable. Everyone is."

"She needs to learn a lesson about loyalty," Helena said, her eyes narrowing with calculated malice. "A girl like that needs to understand what happens when you try to blackmail Arrow Racing."

Helena pulled out her gold-plated phone. "I'm calling every team principal and senior paddock contact I have. By tonight, Sierra will be completely blacklisted from motorsport. She won't be able to get a job washing tires in karting."

"Make sure she feels it," I said, a cruel smirk touching my lips. "Let her see what happens when she walks away from me."

Chloe laughed softly, pulling out her own phone. "Leave the public side to me, darling."

Within two minutes, Chloe drafted a post to her twelve million followers on social media.

*So sad to see trusted paddock helpers abuse their access,* the post read, accompanied by a picture of our sparkling clean garage. * Arrow Racing has officially dismissed a former logistics assistant for attempting to steal proprietary team data. Integrity always comes first. #ArrowRacing #MovingForward*

Within seconds, the post gathered tens of thousands of likes and thousands of vicious comments attacking the unnamed assistant.

"That will teach her," Chloe purred, showing me the screen. "Her name is toxic now. No team will ever touch her."

"Good," I muttered, tossing my gloves onto the workbench. "When she’s starving on the street, she’ll realize she had the world at her feet and threw it away."

A sudden blare of breaking-news alerts echoed through the garage.

Dozens of phones buzzed simultaneously across the technical bay. Down the pit lane, a sudden wave of frantic murmuring rose from the neighboring team garages.

Marcus gasped, his eyes glued to the giant paddock television screen mounted above our tool racks.

"Look at the broadcast," Marcus whispered, his voice trembling.

The Sky Sports F1 graphic flashed bright red across the screen.

*BREAKING NEWS: ABERDEEN-BASED APEX-VALENTI RACING SAVED FROM BANKRUPTCY.*

The lead commentator's voice boomed through the speakers. *"In a stunning development that has sent shockwaves through the global motorsport industry, the Vance Group—the world's most elusive private aerospace and industrial conglomerate—has completed a full three-hundred-and-fifty-million-euro acquisition of Apex-Valenti!"*

Helena froze, her hand hovering over her phone. "The Vance Group? They've stayed out of consumer racing for decades. Why would they buy a bankrupt backmarker team?"

*"The new ownership structure takes effect immediately,"* the commentator continued, breathless with excitement. *"According to team filings reviewed in the paddock, the mystery buyer has already issued its very first executive directive."*

The television graphic cut to a live feed of the Apex-Valenti garage, where security teams were tearing down the old team banners and replacing them with a sleek silver eagle crest.

*"Apex-Valenti has suspended its failed development package and announced an accelerated rebuild of its aerodynamic and vehicle-dynamics program,"* the reporter announced. *"Starting at the Austrian round, the team will debut a major upgrade built around newly licensed Vance Group engineering."*

A strange, suffocating dread clawed at my throat as I stared at the silver eagle crest on the screen.

Where had I seen that emblem before?
