You Kept Me a Secret, So I Bought Your F1 Rival Chapter 1

I sat in a cold pit lane garage for three hours on our third wedding anniversary, holding a charred cupcake and the telemetry data that just won him the Monaco Grand Prix. Liam didn’t come back to our hotel. Instead, a push notification lit up my phone: a 4K livestream from the VIP Paddock Club, where my husband had his arm wrapped around supermodel Chloe Sterling, drinking vintage champagne while thousands chanted for them to kiss. When his mother shoved me into an alley and hissed, "The world loves a bachelor, Sierra—know your place and stay invisible," I didn't cry. I pulled out my private titanium phone, called my family’s asset manager, and pulled the plug on his $40 million engine telemetry. By morning, the signed divorce papers were taped to his locker, and the next paddock grid had a new billionaire team owner—me.

POV: Sierra Vance

The roar of turbocharged V6 hybrid power units shook the metal walls of the shipping container behind Arrow Racing’s garage.

Over the team radio, the race engineer’s voice crackled through the static. "Checkered flag! P1, Liam! You just won the Monaco Grand Prix!"

A deafening cheer erupted across the pit lane.

I sat alone on an overturned toolbox in the dark logistics container, surrounded by spare tires and grease rags. My fingers hovered over the keyboard of my triple-monitor setup. On screen, the green lines of Liam’s real-time aerodynamic grip calculations stabilized.

On lap fifty-four, when the track cooled and the car began sliding, I had quietly recalculated the brake-migration and energy-deployment settings from this damp container. The race engineer relayed my switch sequence to Liam, and he dialed it in from the steering wheel. That single tweak had given him the three-tenths of a second he needed to hold off Ferrari.

Nobody outside Liam and a tiny handful of engineers knew the anonymous telemetry wizard was me. Liam had insisted on keeping it that way.

*“Once I win Monaco, Sierra,”* he had whispered into my hair in our hotel bed last night. *“I won’t let them hide you anymore. I’m announcing our marriage to the entire paddock.”*

I smiled down at the small box in my lap. The silver wrapping paper was smudged with black motor oil near the corner, but inside was a hand-etched titanium watch bezel marked with his racing number, alongside a miniature anniversary cake I had baked at dawn. Today was our third wedding anniversary.

Three years of living in cheap motels, ghostwriting his technical debriefs, and staying out of camera frames.

It was finally over.

I stood up, smoothed down my oversized Arrow Racing jacket, and clutched the gift against my chest. I pushed open the container door to head down the private tunnel toward the driver debrief room.

Outside, the massive paddock LED screens flickered, cutting away from the podium ceremony to the VIP hospitality terrace.

I stopped in my tracks.

After the mandatory weigh-in and podium ceremony, Liam hadn't gone to the tunnel. He stood on the elevated platform in front of the champagne fountain. Flashes from hundreds of photographers lit the afternoon fog like lightning.

His racing suit was half-unzipped, his golden hair damp with sweat.

A woman in a backless scarlet dress pushed through the security line. It was Chloe Sterling, the billionaire heiress and supermodel he had dated before his career crashed three years ago.

Chloe threw her arms around his neck, laughing into the cameras.

Liam didn't pull away. Instead, he gripped her waist with one arm, lifted her effortlessly onto the carbon-fiber nose of Arrow’s display car, and crashed his mouth down onto hers.

The kiss was fierce, public, and ravenous.

The crowd on the terrace went wild. The live broadcast commentators bellowed through the paddock speakers. "Would you look at that! The golden boy of motorsport and Chloe Sterling! The golden couple is officially back together!"

Around me, mechanics and pit crew members raised their beers, whistling and shouting.

"Did you see that?" one technician laughed, clapping another on the shoulder. "Liam's back with Chloe! That's twenty million in sponsor bonuses right there!"

The box in my hands felt suddenly heavy. My throat closed up as I stared at the giant screen. Liam was still holding Chloe against the display car, whispering something in her ear that made her throw her head back in delight.

He hadn't forgotten to announce a marriage. He had used me to win the trophy that bought his way back into her world.

I backed away from the garage door, turning toward the quiet backstage corridor to breathe.

"Still daydreaming, girl?"

A cold, sharp voice cut through the corridor.

Helena, Liam’s mother, stood blocking the concrete hallway. Two broad-shouldered private security guards flanked her. She wore an immaculate cream coat, her designer sunglasses resting atop perfectly styled hair.

"Helena," I said, my voice shaking despite my best efforts. "Let me through. Liam promised—"

"Liam promised you nothing," Helena interrupted.

Before I could react, she raised her leather handbag and struck the gift box from my hands.

The box hit the concrete floor. The lid snapped off, and the small cake spilled out into the grime, frosting smeared across the gravel next to the titanium watch casing.

Helena looked down, her face twisted in pure disgust. She stepped forward and brought the sharp heel of her designer shoe down directly onto the cake, crushing the sponge and sugar into a sticky paste.

"Look at this pathetic junk," Helena said, sneering as she wiped invisible dust from her coat. "You honestly thought you were going to walk out on that stage?"

"I’m his wife," I said, my nails digging into the palms of my hands. "We’ve been married for three years. I built the aero models that put him on that podium."

"You're a mechanic's daughter from nowhere," Helena snapped. She reached into her bag, pulled out a thick document, and shoved it hard against my chest. "Liam is a ten-billion-dollar brand now. Sponsors want Chloe. High society wants Chloe. His fans will never know a dirty hillbilly like you ever touched his sheets."

The pages fluttered against my fingers. It was an extended non-disclosure agreement with a ten-million-dollar penalty clause for speaking to the press.

"Sign the extension," Helena commanded, her eyes cold as ice. "Arrow Racing paid you an engineering wage. That’s all you’re worth. If you utter one word about a marriage certificate, I will bury you in lawsuits until you don't have a penny left for bread. Have some self-respect and know your place."

She turned on her heel and walked away, her guards trailing closely behind her.

I stood alone in the corridor. The smell of crushed vanilla and stale exhaust fumes hung thick in the air.

My pocket buzzed.

I pulled out my cracked phone. It was a text from Liam.

*Tonight’s sponsor gala is critical. Don't wait up. Call a cab back to that cheap motel on the outskirts. Do not show your face around the paddock or embarrass me.*

No inquiry about where I was. No mention of our anniversary. Just an order to disappear into the dark.

A single tear slid down my cheek. I reached up and wiped it away with the back of my grease-stained hand.

I looked down at the crushed cake, then at the cheap silver band on my left ring finger.

I had walked away from my name, my family, and my inheritance to pull him out of the gutter when he was an unranked driver with blown engines. I had spent three years fixing his broken wings while he stepped on my shoulders to reach the sky.

I twisted the silver ring off my finger.

Without a second thought, I tossed it into the open barrel of black waste motor oil beside the container. It sank beneath the sludge with a faint, hollow plop.

I walked back into the container, reached into the hidden bottom compartment of my heavy toolbox, and pulled out a sleek, encrypted titanium satellite phone. It had remained untouched and powered down for three long years.

I powered it on. The screen flashed with an emblem of an eagle crest.

I dialed the only number saved in the directory.

The call connected on the very first ring.

"Lady Sierra?" a crisp, aristocratic voice answered, trembling slightly with controlled emotion. "Is it really you?"

"Butler," I said, my voice steady, cold, and clear. "Send the Vance private jet to Nice Côte d'Azur immediately."

There was a split second of silence on the other end, followed by deep relief. "Right away, my Lady. The flight crew is already on standby."

"One more thing," I said, staring at the telemetry screens showing Liam's victory data. "Execute Protocol Zero. Terminate every anonymous aerodynamic and engine patent authorization I granted to Arrow Racing. Effective tonight."

"Consider it done, Lady Sierra. The jet is wheels up. Welcome home."
