You Called Me a Nobody, So I Married Your Don Chapter 1

For three years, I was the invisible ghost in Matteo Carbone’s mansion. I cooked his meals, patched his gunshot wounds, and kept his family’s blood-soaked empire afloat from the shadows. On our third anniversary, he didn’t bring home flowers—he brought Gianna, the mob princess, and ordered me to make up the guest bed for her. His mother tossed a maid’s apron at my feet and sneered, "Know your place, you penniless nobody."

I didn't cry. I set my wedding ring on the counter, signed the annulment, and walked out into the rain.

Forty-eight hours later, at the Five Families Syndicate Gala, Matteo strutted in, expecting to rule the room. Until Don Salvatore Rossi—the ruthless kingpin his father bowed to—stepped down from his throne, knelt before me, and kissed my knuckles: "Welcome home, Miss Vance. Shall we cut their throat lines tonight?"

ELENA'S POV

The grandfather clock in the foyer chimed midnight, the deep toll echoing through the dining level of the three-story penthouse.

On the dining table, the coq au vin had long gone cold beneath the silver cloches. The taper candles had burned down to uneven stubs of wax, their small flames flickering against the dark floor-to-ceiling glass overlooking the Manhattan skyline.

I adjusted the linen apron over my navy silk dress, smoothing the fabric with palms that felt slightly damp.

Three years.

Three years in this glass cage, keeping his meals warm and making his accounts look better than they were. Beside my wine glass rested a black leather folder. Five months of reconstruction had exposed twenty-eight million dollars he had called legitimate logistics revenue. I knew better. Some of the signatures hiding its origin were mine.

Once, I had imagined giving him the finished accounts for our anniversary. Six weeks ago, I had given the complete records to my attorney instead. Tonight, I was waiting for the last promise he could still keep.

Matteo had made a promise when we married privately three years ago: "Give me time to secure the leadership, Elena. On our third anniversary, once the council approves my seat as Don, I'll bring you into the light. I'll introduce you to the family as my wife."

Next to the folder sat a velvet box containing a vintage gold watch, engraved with our anniversary date. I had bought it before taking the records to my lawyer. Returning it had felt like admitting I already knew how tonight would end.

A sharp buzz broke the silence as the private elevator doors slid open.

Loud laughter drifted into the foyer, accompanied by the heavy tread of hard soles on marble. The scent of rain, expensive cologne, and vintage champagne flooded the quiet room as half a dozen armed bodyguards filed in, carrying cases of Dom Pérignon.

At the center of them stood Matteo.

He was impeccably dressed in a tailored charcoal suit, his dark hair damp from the storm outside. But he wasn't alone. Clinging tightly to his arm was Gianna Castiglione, the only daughter of the late Don Antonio. She wore an emerald satin gown that barely covered her thighs, a white mink stole draped over her shoulders, her fingers tangled possessively in Matteo's sleeve.

I froze by the dining table, my fingers tightening against the back of the chair.

Matteo tossed his wet overcoat to a guard without glancing in my direction. The man who used to warm my hands between his had walked past my cold dinner without slowing. He guided Gianna toward the living room, his hand resting low on the curve of her hip.

"Matteo?" I managed to say, my voice cutting through the noise.

He stopped, turning his head as if only just noticing my presence. His dark eyes flicked over the candlelit table, the untouched plates, and the apron tied around my waist. Not a single trace of warmth registered on his face.

"You're still awake," he said flatly.

Gianna tilted her head, her manicured fingers resting against Matteo's chest as she looked at me with an amused smile. "Matteo, darling, I thought you said you lived alone. Who is this? The midnight staff?"

Matteo didn't correct her. He didn't even flinch.

"She handles the house," Matteo said smoothly, patting Gianna's hand before looking back at me with cold detachment. "Elena, go upstairs to the east wing. Strip the bed in the guest suite and put on the fresh silk sheets. Gianna had a long flight from Sicily, and she's staying in the suite right next to the master bedroom tonight."

A bitter chill rushed through my veins, numbing my fingertips.

"The room next to yours?" I asked, staring directly into his eyes. "Matteo, do you remember what tonight was?"

"It doesn't matter what day it is," he replied, his voice hardening with warning. "Don Antonio's loyalists officially backed my ascension tonight. Gianna is here as my guest of honor. Don't start an argument in front of my men."

Before I could speak, another set of footsteps sounded from the elevator vestibule.

Donna Carmela, Matteo's mother, walked into the penthouse. Draped in black lace and dripping in South Sea pearls, she carried an aura of absolute authority. Two more guards trailed closely behind her.

Carmela's sharp gaze scanned the room before locking onto me. Her lip curled in immediate disgust.

"Still playing the lady of the house, are you?" Carmela sneered.

She reached into a paper bag carried by the guard next to her, pulled out a cheap, coarse canvas cleaning apron, and hurled it across the room. The heavy fabric hit my chest with a dull thud before falling to the floor between my feet.

"Put it on," Carmela commanded, her voice ringing across the penthouse. "Did you really think three years of warming my son's bed would make you a Moretti? You're nothing but a stray he picked up from the dirt. An opportunistic parasite living off our family's wealth."

Several guards turned away, smirking.

Gianna let out a soft, theatrical sigh, stepping forward. She raised one foot, showing off a designer stiletto caked with mud.

"Donna Carmela, please, don't be too hard on her," Gianna said, her tone dripping with mock sweetness. "We stopped by my father's grave in the rain, and my shoes are utterly ruined. It's so dreadful to walk on these beautiful marble floors like this."

Carmela looked at me, her eyes icy. "You heard her. Kneel down, take off Gianna's shoes, and clean the mud off her feet before you go make the bed."

The air in the room felt heavy and suffocating.

I stood completely still, looking past Carmela toward the man I had spent three years protecting and serving in total secrecy.

Matteo reached into his jacket, pulled out a silver lighter, and lit a cigar. He took a slow drag, exhaling a thick ring of gray smoke into the space between us. His expression remained entirely indifferent.

"Elena, don't embarrass yourself," Matteo said, his tone devoid of any sympathy. "Do what my mother told you. Gianna is mafia royalty. She represents the bloodline and the true public face of this family. You're just a nobody."

You're just a nobody.

The words hit like a physical strike, but the pain didn't shatter me. Instead, something deep inside my chest went completely still, freezing over into solid glass.

I looked at the mud on Gianna's shoe. I looked at Carmela's sneering face. Finally, I looked at Matteo, who was already turning his attention back to pouring champagne for the woman beside him.

I didn't cry. Not a single tear slipped down my face.

Slowly, I reached out to the table. My fingers wrapped around the small velvet box containing the gold watch. Without a word, I slipped it into my pocket.

Then, I reached behind my waist and untied the linen apron.

I pulled it over my head, picked up the canvas apron from the floor, and dropped both into the brass bin beside the counter.

I let the metal lid fall shut with a clang.

Matteo stopped mid-pour, his brow furrowing as he turned to glare at me. "Elena. What do you think you're doing?"

"I don't work for you, Matteo," I said, my voice steady, clear, and utterly calm. "And I certainly don't work for your guests."

Carmela's face twisted with rage. "How dare you speak to him like that..."

"Save your breath," I interrupted, looking the matriarch straight in the eye.

I picked up the black folder and walked past the guards toward the private hallway without looking back. Behind me, Gianna whispered something sharp, and Matteo called my name in a voice laced with rising anger, but I didn't stop.

Inside the small guest room Matteo had moved me into six months earlier, I locked the oak door. I retrieved my private phone from behind the closet panel and took the black folder from under my arm.

For three years, I had overseen the private credit that kept the Moretti companies afloat. Matteo called it bookkeeping. He had never asked why my approval mattered more than his chief financial officer's.

The contracts ran through trustees and a private investment fund. My name was absent from the letters he bothered to read, but my authority was not.

I sent two messages: one to my attorney, one to Gabriel, the man who had managed my family's affairs since I was a child.

Have the papers ready. Pick me up at six-thirty.

Then I opened the lender's approval portal. The next advance was already flagged for review because Matteo had breached its terms. Only I could authorize another exception.

I selected HOLD.

On the screen, a timer counted down to the morning payment window. For once, I would not be waiting to save him from it.
