Chapter 1

Elena's Pov

The cake was Victoria’s idea.

I was standing inside the bakery, staring at a glass counter full of frosted tiers and sugar flowers, completely lost, when my phone rang. Her name lit up the screen and I answered without a second thought.

“Elena, get the chocolate one,” she said before I could even speak. “Ethan has been talking about chocolate cake for two weeks. Were you even listening to him?”

“I was listening.”

“You are standing in front of the vanilla one right now, aren’t you.”

I laughed and turned away from it. “Maybe.”

“Chocolate, Elena. Your son is turning five, not forty.”

She stayed on the call while I made my choice, her voice light and easy. She said she was stuck in traffic somewhere downtown. We talked about Ethan, about how fast the years were moving, about how neither of us could believe he was already five.

I paid for the cake and balanced the box carefully against my hip.

“Drive safe,” she said. “And Elena, he is going to love it.”

“I hope so.” I smiled. “I’ll see you this weekend.”

“I cannot wait.” She hung up and I walked to my car.

The drive home took longer than it should have. There was a slowdown on the bridge and I sat in traffic with the box on the passenger seat, with one hand on the wheel, my mind already running ahead to the evening.

I kept thinking about the Mercer contract. We had finally closed it that afternoon after three months of back and forth, two rescheduled meetings, and more late nights than I could count. It was the biggest deal my department had landed all year.

I wanted to tell Adrian. That was all I kept thinking, I wanted to go home and tell my husband and watch his face when he heard the news. He had been carrying so much stress lately, and I thought maybe this would help. Maybe we would have dinner together, just the three of us, and for one evening things would feel like what I had always imagined they could be.

I was still holding onto that thought when I turned into the driveway.

The house was lit up inside. Adrian’s car was already there, which surprised me. He almost never came home early anymore. I felt a small, quiet warmth move through my chest. I took the cake from the seat, and walked to the front door.

Everything felt ordinary when I stepped out. I opened the door and stepped inside.

The ground floor was quiet. There was no television sound, no sound of Ethan’s feet on the tiles. I set my bag near the entrance and started toward the kitchen with the cake, thinking I would put it in the refrigerator before I called out for anyone.

Then I heard a soft sound and my feet came to a stop.

I stopped at the foot of the stairs, frozen.

The sound was coming from our bedroom. It was soft and muffled, but unmistakable. I stood there and I told myself it was something else.

A television maybe, a phone call…... .anything. I tried to brush it away but my mind wouldn't. The woman's instinct, as my mother would say, that something was wrong

Ethan!

My little boy could be in trouble and Adrian wasn't near. I walked briskly towards the bedroom.

The bedroom door was not fully closed, and I pushed it open.

The cake hit the floor immediately before I could even process it. One moment I was holding it and the next it was on the ground, the box splitting open, white frosting smearing across the floor. I was looking at my husband and the woman underneath him. And they were both looking back at me.

Adrian stopped. He turned his head slowly like he was not even trying to hide what he was doing. He did not scramble, he did not look away either. He just looked at me with those dark eyes and said nothing, and this eerie cold silence stretched between us

Victoria sat up.

Victoria, my best friend. The woman who had sat across from me at more dinners than I could count and told me to be patient. Who had held my hand the night I cried over a forgotten anniversary and said men just needed time. Who had told me she was across town and to pick a cake for Ethan.

She reached for the sheet casually. The expression on her face was not guilt. It was something closer to relief.

“Elena.” That was all she said.

I looked at Adrian. “What is this?”

He sat up slowly and reached for his shirt on the side of the bed. “Elena…”

“Don’t.” I replied, my voice much more quiet and firm than I'd expected. “Don’t say my name like that. Tell me what this is.”

He looked at me for a long moment. “You already know what it is.”

The words landed like someone had punched my chest. I felt my hands shaking at my sides. “How long?”

Victoria was the one who answered. “Before you.” She said it simply, without apology. “We were together before Adrian ever married you.”

The room tilted. I was about to faint, my vision was spinning.

Eight years. Eight years of her sitting in my kitchen, sleeping in my guest room, answering my calls at midnight when I was falling apart over this man. Eight years of telling me to stay, to endure, to be patient while she was the reason I was suffering in the first place.

“You knew,” I said to her. My voice was shaking now and I could not stop it. “You sat there every single time I cried over him. You told me to hold on. You knew the whole time.”

She did not deny it. She just looked at me with those calm eyes and said nothing, and somehow that was worse than any answer she could have given.

I turned back to Adrian. “What did I do to you?” I asked. “What did I ever do to you that was so wrong? I loved you. I stayed when anyone else would have left. I worked until I had nothing left to give. I helped you rebuild everything when your company fell apart. What was it? What was never enough?”

He stood up. He buttoned his shirt slowly, one button at a time, not rushing. “I never asked you to do any of that.”

What the fuck?

“You are my husband.” I reminded him in case he had forgotten.

“I didn’t need your help, Elena.” His voice was flat. “I never asked for it.”

Oh really?

I stared at him. After everything, after every late night and every sacrifice and every piece of myself I had handed over quietly and without any complaint, that was what he had to say.

“So what now?” I asked, blinking back tears.

Adrian glanced at Victoria briefly. Then he looked back at me, and his expression did not change.

“Leave,” he said. “If you want to, no one is stopping you.”
