Wife Reclaims Her Life Novel Cover

Wife Reclaims Her Life

I adjusted the Hermès scarf around my neck as the first-class cabin filled with passengers. The small luxury was one of the few remnants of my former life that I still allowed myself—a silent rebellion against Ryan's constant scrutiny of my 'elitist' tendencies. Three years of marriage had taught me to keep such indulgences minimal and discreet. The New York to Denver flight was a necessary evil—another business trip that Ryan insisted I handle personally. 'You're the face people trust,' he'd said with that smile that never quite reached his eyes. What he meant was: you're the Lancaster, and we need that pedigree. I settled into my window seat, grateful for the small bubble of peace before returning to Seattle. To him. The thought made my fingers automatically twist my wedding ring—a nervous habit I'd developed, turning the diamond that once symbolized a promise but now felt more like a beautifully crafted shackle. 'Excuse me, that's my seat.' The voice cut through my thoughts like a blade wrapped in silk.

Chapter 1

I arranged the last of the silver cutlery beside the wedding china we hadn't used since our second anniversary. The candlelight cast a warm glow across our dining room, transforming the ordinary space into something magical. Five years of marriage deserved celebration, even if things between Ryan and me had been... strained lately.

My fingers trembled slightly as I placed the final red rose in the crystal vase. I'd spent all afternoon preparing his favorite meal—beef Wellington with truffle mashed potatoes. The dessert, a dark chocolate soufflé, was timed to perfection. Everything had to be perfect tonight.

"This will work," I whispered to myself, smoothing down the navy blue dress I'd bought specially for the occasion. It had been months since Ryan had really looked at me—truly seen me—and tonight I was determined to remind him of the woman he'd fallen in love with.

I checked my watch. Ryan had texted that he'd be home by seven, which gave me just enough time to light the candles and pour the wine. As I struck the match, I heard it—laughter. His laughter. The rich, uninhibited kind that had become so rare in our home.

My heart lifted for a moment. Was he watching something funny on his phone? At least he was in a good mood. But then I realized the sound was coming from his home office. He must have slipped in while I was busy in the kitchen.

"No way! You actually got the legendary phoenix pet?" Ryan's voice carried through the wall, followed by more laughter.

I froze, the match burning down toward my fingers until the heat jolted me back to awareness. I quickly blew it out, a small tendril of smoke rising between us like a question mark.

That wasn't the voice of a man watching videos. He was talking to someone. On our anniversary.

"That's not fair, Vicky. You always get the rare stuff first," he continued, his voice taking on a playful, teasing quality I hadn't heard directed at me in... I couldn't remember how long.

Vicky. Victoria Snow. His ex-girlfriend.

Something cold and heavy settled in my stomach, replacing the nervous excitement that had been fluttering there all day. I told myself I was overreacting. It was probably innocent. A quick work call, perhaps. But my feet were already moving toward his office, drawn by an instinct stronger than reason.

The door wasn't fully closed. Through the narrow gap, I could see Ryan leaning back in his leather chair, feet propped on the desk, his face illuminated by the blue glow of his computer screen. He was smiling—that genuine, crinkly-eyed smile that used to be mine.

"I sent you some extra coins yesterday," he said, his voice dropping to a conspiratorial tone. "Did you get them?"

A feminine laugh filtered through the speakers. "I did. Very generous of you to share your resources with me, Mr. Mitchell."

"Well, what's mine is yours in the pet kingdom," Ryan replied with a chuckle. "My character's house is basically your character's second home at this point."

I stood frozen, one hand pressed against the doorframe for support. They were talking about some virtual pet game—the one Ryan had been obsessed with for months. The same game he'd dismissed as "too childish" when I'd expressed interest in playing together.

"Speaking of sharing resources," Victoria's voice turned honeyed, intimate, "thank you for the other transfer. You're always my hero when I'm in a tight spot."

My stomach lurched. Transfer? What transfer?

"Don't mention it," Ryan waved dismissively. "What are friends for? Besides, it's not like anyone checks those accounts but me."

The room seemed to tilt slightly. I gripped the doorframe tighter, my knuckles turning white. Last week, Ryan had interrogated me over a $75 charge for Lily's asthma medication, claiming we needed to "budget more carefully."

"You're the best, Ry," Victoria purred. "Unlike some people, you actually understand what's important."

Ryan laughed again, and I watched as he leaned closer to the screen, his voice dropping to a murmur. "Well, today's supposed to be important. Fifth anniversary and all that. Claire's probably setting up some elaborate dinner downstairs as we speak."

"Poor baby," Victoria cooed with mock sympathy. "Trapped in domestic bliss while I'm over here having all the fun without you."

In that moment, as Ryan smirked at her words, the perfect illusion I'd been desperately maintaining shattered completely. The candles, the dinner, the dress—all of it revealed for what it truly was: a pathetic attempt to salvage something that had been broken for longer than I'd been willing to admit.

I stood there, invisible in my own home, on my own anniversary, watching my husband share a moment of genuine connection with another woman. And the most painful realization wasn't that he was betraying me—it was that I'd been betraying myself by pretending everything was fine.
