Chapter 3

Kaden stopped coming home most nights.

When he did, he moved through the house like I wasn't in it. Not cruel. Just absent. He'd walk past the sitting room where I sat with my hands folded and my eyes lowered, and he wouldn't even glance my way. I used to ache for that glance. Now I catalogued it. Another data point. Another proof.

One evening I stood in the hallway outside his office, cane in hand, and watched him through the crack in the door. He didn't know I could see him. He didn't know I could see anything.

He was on the phone, half-turned toward the window, and before he answered whoever was on the line, he reached up and straightened his cufflinks. Both of them. A small, precise gesture, the kind he did without thinking. I remembered that gesture from before the accident stole my sight—he did it every time he was about to say something he knew was wrong.

I watched his profile in the lamplight. The clean line of his jaw. The easy confidence in his shoulders. I waited to feel something. Anger, maybe. Grief. The old ache of loving a man who couldn't love me back.

Nothing came.

I felt cold and clear, like water in a glass. I was a woman counting days now, and Kaden Hicks was just a number on a list I was keeping in my head.

I turned and walked away before he could catch me watching.

The call came on a Thursday afternoon.

I was in the garden, sitting on the stone bench I liked because it faced the sun—I told myself I liked the warmth on my face, but really I liked that I could watch the light move through the leaves without anyone knowing my eyes could follow it. My phone buzzed against my thigh.

"Chloe?" It was Mrs. Alvarez, my mother's neighbor. Her voice was tight and fast. "Chloe, honey, it's your mom. She collapsed this morning. I found her on the kitchen floor. They took her to Mercy General."

My stomach dropped straight through the bench, through the stone, through the earth.

"Is she—" I couldn't finish it.

"She's alive. But honey, the doctor said her heart—she needs surgery. Soon. Open-heart. They're saying forty-eight hours or—" Her voice cracked. "They're saying eighty thousand dollars, Chloe. I don't have that kind of money. Do you—"

"I'll handle it," I said. My voice didn't shake. I was surprised by that, distantly, the way you notice something odd about your own hands. "Tell them I'm coming. Tell them the money is coming."

I hung up and sat very still in the sun.

My mother. My mother who taught me to smell the difference between a spring harvest and an autumn one with my eyes closed. My mother who hummed while she worked and never asked me for anything, not once, not in all the years I'd been gone from her small kitchen and into this cold marble house.

I called Kaden.

He picked up on the second ring. "Chloe. Make it quick, I'm in the middle of something."

"My mother collapsed." I kept my voice steady. Clear. No performance in it, no plea dressed up as a question. Just the truth, laid flat between us. "She needs emergency heart surgery. Eighty thousand dollars, within forty-eight hours, or she dies. I need you to send the money today."

There was a pause. Behind him, I heard voices—a woman's low laugh, the soft chime of a bell, the particular hush of a very expensive room.

"Where are you?" I asked, before I could stop myself.

"Doesn't matter." A beat. Then, muffled, not quite covering the receiver: "No, the emerald cut. The bigger one."

Aylin's voice, bright and pleased, drifted through the line. "Kaden, look at this one—two hundred, but it's stunning—"

I sat frozen on the bench, phone pressed to my ear, listening to my husband shop for jewelry while my mother lay dying in a hospital bed three miles from where I used to live.

"Kaden." My voice cracked, just once. I hated that it did. "Did you hear me?"

"I heard you." He sighed, the sound of a man being mildly inconvenienced. "Look, Chloe, we can't allocate discretionary funds for every external emergency. It's not how the family manages money. There are programs—public assistance, hospital financial aid, that sort of thing. You should look into that."

External emergency. My mother's life, filed under external emergency.

"She's dying," I said. "She raised me alone. She has no one else."

"I have a meeting," he said. "I'll talk to you later."

The line went dead.

I sat in the garden for a long time after that, the sun still warm on my face, the phone still warm in my hand. I didn't cry. Not yet. I walked back into the house with my cane tapping soft against the marble, past the housekeeper, past the pearls Margaret wore even to breakfast, and I let no one see my face.

I went to the guest room. I never used the master bedroom anymore—hadn't in months—and that night I was grateful for the distance, for the door that locked, for the dark that no one would think to check.

I took my mother's tea journal from its cloth bundle and pressed it against my chest, and I cried without sound, the way I'd learned to do everything in this house. Silent. Careful. Unseen.

Somewhere across town, my mother was running out of time.

And somewhere across town, a two-hundred-thousand-dollar necklace was being wrapped in a small, elegant box.
