Chapter 4

The voicemail came at 11:47 p.m. I was sitting in the guest room with the lights off, the way I did most nights now, when the phone buzzed against the nightstand.

I let it ring out. Then I dialed in.

"Ms. Morrison, this is Mercy General calling regarding your mother, Marie Morrison. I'm so sorry to inform you that she passed at 9:14 this evening. She was comfortable. She wasn't alone—one of our nurses, Sandra, stayed with her through the night. Please call us back at your earliest convenience to discuss next steps."

I listened to it once. I didn't cry. I didn't shake. I pressed delete, and the little icon spun and vanished, and that was that.

She wasn't alone. Someone named Sandra had held my mother's hand while I sat in a house with marble floors and did nothing. I filed that name away somewhere I wouldn't look at it too closely, not yet.

I got up. My legs felt like they belonged to someone else. I walked down the hall, down the grand staircase where I'd once fallen and lost everything and gained my sight back in the same breath, and I went into the kitchen.

It was 2 a.m. The house was silent the way expensive houses are silent—no creaks, no settling, just cold air moving through vents somewhere far away.

I filled the kettle. I measured the leaves by hand, the way my mother taught me, not by scoop but by feel, letting my fingers tell me when it was enough. I watched the water climb toward a boil and did not rush it. My mother used to say you can't hurry good tea. You can't hurry grief either, I thought. But you can hold both hands still while it moves through you.

I poured the water. I watched the leaves unfurl, dark green ribbons opening in the cup, and I thought about her hands, and her humming, and the way she never once asked me for anything in all the years I'd been gone.

I drank the tea standing at the counter, alone, at two in the morning, in a kitchen that was never mine.

Something in me went quiet after that. Not the quiet of giving up. The quiet of a decision already made.

The week that followed had a shape to it, and I moved through that shape with a patience that surprised even me.

I downloaded the footage first. All of it, from all four cameras, onto a hard drive I kept wrapped in a scarf at the bottom of my suitcase, and again onto a cloud account under a name that wasn't mine. I did this in pieces, over several nights, never more than twenty minutes at a time, the laptop screen turned low so no light would show under the door.

Then, on the sixth night, I watched it. All of it. Start to finish, sitting cross-legged on the guest bed with the door locked and my mother's urn on the nightstand beside me like a witness.

I watched Kaden and Aylin in my own bed, the sheets I used to sleep in, her laugh muffled against his shoulder. I watched Margaret's face after the soup hit my arm—the flat, satisfied nod she gave the housekeeper, so small you'd miss it if you weren't looking for exactly that. I watched Kaden on the phone in his study, cufflinks catching the light, confirming the transfer, confirming the swap, confirming that I would never suspect a thing.

I watched it the way you'd watch weather. Not with rage. With recognition.

When it was over, I closed the laptop.

I didn't cry that night either. I was past that particular door. What I felt instead was something closer to stillness—the stillness of a woman who has finished reading the last page of a book she already knew the ending to.

I was ready.

Tuesday morning, Kaden left for the city at seven. Margaret left for her luncheon at ten, pearls fastened, perfume already filling the foyer before she was even out the door.

I waited until the house was empty except for the housekeeper, who I knew would be in the east wing until noon.

I packed one suitcase. Not the walk-in closet full of things the Hicks family had bought me—not the silk, not the cashmere, not a single piece of jewelry except the thin gold chain my mother gave me, which I was already wearing, which I had never once taken off. Just what was mine. A few plain clothes. My phone. The hard drive wrapped in its scarf.

In the kitchen, I set the divorce papers on the breakfast table, signed on every line where my signature was required. I set my wedding ring on top of the stack. Then I filled a teacup with hot water—full to the brim—and set it down on the papers so the draft from the hallway wouldn't scatter them before someone found them.

I tucked my mother's urn under my left arm. Under my right, the faded blue cloth bundle of her tea journals, the silk tie soft and familiar against my palm.

I walked through the foyer, across the marble I had scrubbed on my knees, past the coat closet with its hidden camera still recording, still watching, the way it always had.

I opened the front door. Late morning light spilled across the steps, bright and clean.

I did not look back.

The door closed behind me with a quiet, final click.
