"Target vehicle has left Manhattan grid. Moving southeast on I-495 toward Queens industrial district. License plate confirms—it's Mr. Hunter's car."

The analyst's voice was calm, professional, but the tension in the room was immediate. He tapped a key, and the vehicle's trajectory appeared on a large wall-mounted display, a pulsing red dot against the darkened map of New York.

"Should we notify Miss Spencer?" one of the technicians asked.

"Not yet. Protocol requires—"

"I'll take that call."

The voice came from the doorway. Emelia Spencer stood there, her silhouette backlit by the hallway's ambient light. She was still wearing her day's attire—a charcoal pencil skirt and crisp white blouse—but she'd removed her blazer, and her silver-streaked hair had come loose from its usual immaculate chignon. She looked like she'd been working late, which she had.

The analyst turned in his chair. "Mrs. Spencer, we weren't aware you were still in the building. The system flagged Mr. Hunter's car—"

"I saw the alert on my phone. What's the location?"

She crossed the room in three measured strides, her heels clicking against the polished floor. The analyst pulled up a satellite image of the area—a sprawling industrial lot, a warehouse with a sagging roof, chain-link fence rusted and broken in places.

Emelia studied the screen, her expression unreadable. Then she reached for her phone.

The first call was to Anders. It lasted seventeen seconds.

The second was to the tactical team leader. Eight seconds.

The third was to a number she had kept in her private directory for fifteen years—a theatrical supply company owner who owed her a favor. That call was longer. Forty-three seconds.

When she hung up, she looked at the analyst.

"Keep tracking them. Update me every thirty seconds."

She turned and walked out, her footsteps fading down the hallway.

Back in the warehouse, Greyson stood facing Carver's men, his body rigid with tension. I stood a few feet behind him, my hands still curved protectively over my stomach.

"Where is she?" Greyson demanded, his voice echoing in the cavernous space.

Carver stepped forward, his expression almost bored. "Right here, Mr. Hunter. Safe and sound. Just like we promised. Now... your wife."

He gestured toward me.

Greyson turned. He looked at me—really looked at me—for the first time since we'd left the hotel. His eyes were cold, distant. I searched his face for any flicker of the man I'd married, any hesitation, any moment of doubt.

There was nothing.

I thought of our wedding day. I thought of every morning I'd woken up beside him. I thought of the life growing inside me—the life he'd accused me of lying about.

"Greyson," I said quietly. "Please."

He didn't answer. Instead, he reached out and placed his hand on my back. I felt the pressure of his palm through my blouse—the same hand that had once caressed my face, that had held mine across countless dinner tables and through seven years of life together.

He pushed me forward.

I stumbled, my heel catching on a piece of broken concrete. I caught myself, my arms tightening around my middle. I didn't fall. I wouldn't give him the satisfaction.

I turned to watch him.

From the shadows, Poppy emerged. Her makeup was artfully smudged, her hair deliberately disheveled. She was the perfect picture of a woman who had been through an ordeal—tears streaming down her cheeks, her body trembling with manufactured relief.

"Greyson!" she cried, her voice breaking on his name.

He walked toward her. His arms opened. He wrapped her in an embrace so tight it seemed to crush the air from her lungs.

"It's okay," he murmured into her hair. "I've got you. You're safe now."

I stood there, watching them, feeling the last thread of love inside me snap completely. Not with a crash or a scream, but with a quiet, final click.

Greyson turned, still holding Poppy, and walked away. He didn't look back.

I was alone now. Truly alone.

I stood straight, my hands still curved over my stomach, and waited.

Three minutes and forty seconds later—I counted each one—the warehouse doors burst open with a sound like thunder.

Bright light flooded the space. Men in tactical gear poured in from every entrance, their movements synchronized and precise. Carver and his men, recognizing the level of force deployed against them, raised their hands without resistance.

And then she walked in.

Emelia Spencer, my mother, strode through the chaos like she owned it. Her heels clicked against the concrete with each measured step, the sound echoing in the sudden silence. Her face was carved from marble, her eyes fixed on me with a ferocity that made my breath catch.

She didn't rush to me. She didn't call my name. She simply walked, each step deliberate and purposeful, until she stood before me.

"Hadley," she said. Just my name. Nothing more.

But in that single word, I heard everything she wasn't saying.
