Chapter 2

Ryan came downstairs whistling.

I was at the stove. Eggs. Toast. Coffee in the French press he liked. The same breakfast I'd made for five years. My hands moved through the motions without thought.

He dropped into his chair and opened his laptop. His phone was already out. He was typing on both.

"That was perfect last night," he said. "Esteban loved it. I could tell."

I set his plate down. I poured his coffee. I said nothing.

"Kehlani really saved us, you know? That ramen thing was genius. So authentic. So real." He looked up. Grinned. "You should've seen his face when she brought it out."

I had seen his face.

I sat down across from Ryan with my own coffee. I didn't eat. I wasn't hungry.

Ryan kept typing. His thumbs moved fast on his phone. He was texting someone. Probably her.

"I'm drafting something," he said. "Equity transfer. Ten percent to Kehlani. She earned it."

I looked at him.

He didn't look up.

"Ten percent," I repeated.

"Yeah. I mean, she's been killing it at the office. And last night? That energy? That's the kind of thing investors respond to. Fresh perspective. You know."

I wrapped both hands around my mug. The ceramic was warm. I focused on that.

"You're giving her ten percent of the company."

"As a thank you. She deserves it." He finally glanced up. "Don't worry. It doesn't affect anything. Just a gesture."

I thought about the five years I'd spent managing his books. Networking on his behalf. Cooking for his investors. Decorating his first office. Never asking for credit. Never putting my name on anything.

I thought about the equity I'd never been offered.

Ryan pulled a document from his laptop bag. Three pages. He'd already printed it. He slid it across the table.

"I need you to co-sign. Spousal consent thing. Formality."

I looked down at the paperwork. His signature was already there. Dated this morning. He'd drafted this before coming downstairs. Before the coffee. Before the eggs.

He'd planned this.

I picked up the document. I read every line. Transfer of equity interest. Ten percent of outstanding shares. Kehlani Ramos. Consideration: services rendered.

Services rendered.

Ryan was back on his phone. Typing. Smiling at whatever was on the screen.

I thought about my father. About the way he'd taught me to read contracts before I read novels. About the way he'd raised me to walk into any room like I had every right to be there.

I thought about the woman I used to be.

I picked up the pen.

Ryan glanced over. "Thanks, babe. You're the best."

I signed my name. Lucia Hamilton. Clear. Legible. Exactly the way my father had taught me.

I set the pen down.

Ryan took the document without looking at it. He folded it. Tucked it in his laptop bag. Kissed my forehead on his way past.

"Gotta run. Meeting at nine. Love you."

The door closed behind him.

I sat at the table. I looked at my coffee. It had gone cold.

I didn't move for a long time.

---

Three days later, I was folding laundry when my phone lit up.

A text from Mina Silva. Ryan's lead engineer. We'd met twice at company events. She'd always been kind.

The text said: *Are you watching this?*

Then a link.

I opened it.

The video was already at two million views. The headline read: TECH INVESTOR ESTEBAN MEDINA SUFFERS MEDICAL EMERGENCY ON STAGE AT JAVITS CENTER.

I pressed play.

The footage was raw. Conference camera. Esteban at a podium. Mid-sentence. Then his face changed. He stopped talking. His hand went to his stomach.

He tried to continue. He couldn't.

He left the stage at a run.

The camera stayed on the empty podium for five long seconds. Then cut to the moderator's frozen face.

I watched it twice.

I thought about the ghost pepper ramen. About the way Kehlani had poured the sauce until the broth turned red. About the way Ryan had laughed.

I thought: *Capsaicin doesn't leave your system for days.*

My phone buzzed again. Another text from Mina. Then another. Then my screen filled with notifications.

News alerts. Twitter threads. A public statement from Esteban's investment firm.

*Effective immediately, Medina Capital is severing all association with Myers Tech. Recent events have revealed an unconscionable lapse in professional judgment and basic human consideration. We do not invest in founders who lack the character to lead.*

I read it three times.

Then I opened Twitter.

The clip was everywhere. Remixed. Meme'd. Captioned. *When you let your side chick cook for your investors.* *This is what happens when you skip due diligence.* *RIP this guy's funding round.*

Ryan's company name was trending.

My phone rang. Ryan.

I let it ring.

It rang again.

I answered.

"Lucia." His voice was tight. High. "Have you seen this?"

"Yes."

"It's a disaster. It's a fucking disaster. Esteban's team just pulled out. Completely. And now everyone else is calling. Everyone's pulling out."

I didn't say anything.

"I need you to fix this," he said. "You know people. Your dad knows people. You have to call someone. You have to—"

"I can't fix this, Ryan."

"What do you mean you can't? You have to try. This is my company. This is everything."

I looked at the laundry in my lap. A shirt I'd ironed yesterday. Pants I'd hemmed last month.

I thought about the ten percent he'd given away.

I thought about the five years I'd given away.

"I signed your paperwork," I said quietly.

"What?"

"The equity transfer. I signed it. You're welcome."

I hung up.

I turned off my phone.

I finished folding the laundry.

Then I went upstairs and pulled a suitcase from the closet.
