Chapter 3

Ryan came through the door like a storm.

I heard his car in the driveway. Heard the door slam. Heard his footsteps heavy on the hardwood.

I was in the kitchen. Same island where I'd signed his paperwork three days ago. Same spot where I'd watched him fold the document without reading it. Where he'd kissed my forehead and called me the best.

I wasn't cooking. I was just standing there.

He found me and stopped in the doorway. His face was red. His shirt was wrinkled. He looked like he hadn't slept.

"Did you see it?" he said. "Did you see what they're saying?"

I looked at him.

"Everyone's pulling out. Everyone. Three investors called today. Three. They all said the same thing. Judgment. Character. Professional standards." He laughed. It sounded broken. "Professional standards. Because of a bowl of ramen."

I didn't say anything.

He started pacing. Kitchen to hallway. Hallway to kitchen.

"You should have stopped her," he said. "You were right there. You saw what she was doing. You could have said something."

I felt something cold settle in my chest.

"I made coq au vin," I said quietly. "For two days. You told me to loosen up."

"That's not—" He stopped. Ran his hands through his hair. "That's not the point. The point is this is fixable. It has to be fixable."

He turned to me. His eyes were wild.

"Your dad knows people. You know people. Those fancy dinners you used to go to. Those charity things. Someone owes you a favor. Someone has to."

I thought about my father. About Haven House. About the light he'd kept on for five years.

"I can't fix this, Ryan."

"Yes you can. You just have to try. Make some calls. Set up a lunch. Do that thing you do where you make people feel special."

I looked at him. Really looked at him.

He wasn't seeing me. He was seeing a tool he'd misplaced.

"I'm not going to do that," I said.

His face changed. The panic shifted to something sharper.

"What do you mean you're not going to do that? This is my company. This is everything I've worked for."

"Everything you've worked for."

The words came out flat. I didn't mean them to. They just were.

Ryan stepped closer. "Don't do this. Don't make this about you. I need you right now. I need you to help me."

I thought about the equity transfer. Ten percent. Services rendered.

I thought about the five years I'd spent managing his books. Cooking for his investors. Ironing his shirts.

I reached under the island.

I pulled out the manila envelope I'd placed there this morning.

I slid it across the counter.

Ryan stared at it. He didn't move.

"What is that?"

"Divorce papers," I said. "Already signed on my side."

The kitchen went very quiet.

Ryan picked up the envelope. His hands were shaking. He tore it open. Pulled out the pages.

I watched him read. Watched his eyes move over the words. Watched him find my signature at the bottom.

Lucia Hamilton.

Clear. Legible. Final.

He looked up at me. His face was white.

"You're serious."

"Yes."

"You can't—" He stopped. Started again. "We can fix this. We can fix everything. The company. Us. I'll make changes. I'll—"

"You chose her cooking," I said quietly. "Now live with the taste."

I walked past him. Up the stairs. Into the bedroom we'd shared for five years.

I pulled the suitcase from the closet. The one I'd packed yesterday. The one I'd unpacked and repacked twice because I kept thinking maybe I was wrong. Maybe I was overreacting.

I wasn't wrong.

I opened it one last time. Checked the contents. Clothes. Toiletries. My laptop.

And beneath everything, wrapped in a silk scarf, the framed photograph.

Me and my father at my Cornell graduation. Both of us laughing at something just off-camera. I couldn't remember what. But I remembered the feeling.

I remembered being seen.

I zipped the suitcase closed.

When I came back downstairs, Ryan was still in the kitchen. Still holding the papers. He looked up.

"Lucia. Please."

I picked up my keys from the bowl by the door. The bowl I'd bought at a flea market in Park Slope. The one I'd thought was charming.

I looked at Ryan one last time.

I didn't see the man who'd brought me wildflowers. I didn't see the graduate student who'd called me his secret weapon.

I just saw someone I used to know.

I walked out the front door.

I put my suitcase in the trunk. I got in the car. I started the engine.

I pulled out of the driveway and turned toward the Long Island Expressway.

I didn't look back.

Three hours. No radio. No calls.

Just the road and the sound of my own breathing.

The sun was setting when I turned onto the gravel drive. Haven House rose up ahead. White stone. Blue shutters. The garden my father tended every Sunday.

I parked. I sat in the car for a moment.

Then I got out.

The front door opened before I reached the steps.

My father stood in the doorway. He looked at me. At the suitcase in my hand.

He didn't ask what happened.

He didn't say I told you so.

He just stepped aside.

I walked in. The house smelled like rosemary. Like bread. Like home.

Denver walked to the dining room. I heard him moving. Heard the clink of plates.

When I followed, there was an extra place at the table.

Two glasses of wine. Two sets of silverware.

He handed me a glass.

"Welcome home, sweetheart," he said.

I took the wine. I sat down.

For the first time in five years, I didn't check my phone.

I didn't set an alarm.

I didn't think about what someone else needed.

I just sat with my father and drank my wine and felt the weight of the day settle into something I could carry.

That night, I slept in my old room.

The one he'd kept exactly as I'd left it.

I slept ten hours.

I didn't dream.
