Chapter 2

I remember the ceiling tiles.

That's what I fixed on when I came back. White acoustic tiles, the kind with tiny perforations in rows. I counted the holes in one tile — sixty-four across, maybe seventy down — while the machine beside me beeped and the pressure in my chest told me I was still alive, which felt, at that moment, like ambiguous news.

The nurse told me later I'd been on the floor for four minutes before anyone found me. Four minutes of my throat sealing itself shut, my body convulsing against the kitchen tile, the granola bowl shattered beside my head. The same granola I made every Sunday and stored in a glass jar on the second shelf. The same jar Hallie walked past every morning on her way to the coffee machine.

I thought about the eleven seconds. Her fingers on my medical file. The red text at the top of the allergy documentation.

I stared at the ceiling tiles and breathed through the rawness in my throat where the intubation tube had been.

Kylo was not there.

---

He came on the second day.

I heard him before I saw him — that particular cadence of his footsteps, unhurried, like a man who has decided in advance that whatever he's walking into is manageable. He appeared in the doorway in a grey coat, no tie, and took in the IV line, the bruising along my inner arm, the hospital bracelet, the monitors. His jaw moved once.

He sat in the chair beside the bed. Not close. The chair was positioned for visitors, and he sat in it like a visitor.

"There's a place in SoHo," he said. "Furnished. Good building, good light. I'll cover everything — utilities, groceries, whatever you need."

I looked at him.

"It would be a cleaner situation," he continued. "For everyone."

The monitor beeped. Outside the window, a cloud moved across the flat grey sky.

"She cried all night," he said. "She feels terrible about this."

I kept looking at him. My throat still felt like raw meat. Speaking hurt, so I didn't.

"Arlette." His voice sharpened slightly — that tone he used when he wanted me to make something easier for him. "Stop making her feel bad. She didn't do anything."

The machine beeped again. I held his gaze until he looked away first, which he did, rubbing the back of his neck.

He left twelve minutes after he arrived. I watched the door close behind him.

Then I pressed the call button for the nurse.

"My phone," I said. My voice came out rough and low, scraped clean. "Please."

I opened the document. Typed the date, the time, the room number. Typed: *Hospital admission, anaphylactic shock, ICU. Cause under investigation. KD present 14 minutes. Offered SoHo condo. Stated HW 'cried all night.' Stated HW 'didn't do anything.' Departed without inquiry into cause or condition.*

I added the hospital bracelet number. Saved it.

Timestamped.

---

Patricia came on the fourth day.

She wore her pearls. Of course she did. She sat in the same visitor's chair and folded her hands in her lap and looked at me with an expression I recognized — the one she used at family dinners when she was about to say something cruel in a kind voice.

"You gave us quite a scare," she said.

I waited.

"Arlette." She tilted her head slightly. "You're a smart woman. You've always been a smart woman. That's never been the question."

The IV line shifted when I adjusted my arm. I watched her eyes track the bruising.

"But there are things a woman has to accept," she continued, softly. "About her body. About what it can and cannot do. You've tried for years, darling. We all know that. And it simply..." She paused, choosing the word with the precision of someone who had rehearsed this. "Your body simply wasn't made for it."

The monitor beeped.

"Hallie is young," Patricia said. "She's already carrying. The family needs—"

"Patricia."

My voice came out quiet. Flat. The rawness in my throat made it sound stripped of everything except the words themselves.

She stopped.

I looked at her. I held her gaze the same way I'd held Kylo's — steady, unblinking, saying nothing more.

The silence stretched. She shifted in her chair. Her hand moved to her pearls, touched them once, and stilled.

She left ten minutes later, satisfied, I think, that my silence meant I was considering it. That I was softening. That she had planted something useful.

She was wrong about what the silence meant.

I picked up my phone. Opened the document. Typed Patricia's name, the date, the time. Typed her exact words from memory — *your body simply wasn't made for it* — and saved them.

Then I lay back against the pillow and looked at the ceiling tiles again.

Sixty-four across. Seventy down.

I was building something. Brick by brick, timestamp by timestamp, in a document no one knew existed.

I just needed to stay alive long enough to finish it.
