Chapter 2

The strap is leather. Dark brown. The kind of thing you'd use to bind a suitcase.

I count the lashes because I need something to hold onto. Something that isn't my voice, which I will not give them. Not Eleanor, watching from her chair by the window with her hands folded in her lap like she's at a recital. Not the man who arranged this, who is somewhere else in this house right now, doing something else, because he couldn't be bothered to watch what he built.

One. Two. Three.

The study smells like cedar and old paper. There's a painting of the Nevada desert on the wall. I stare at it.

Twenty. Twenty-one.

I think about the files. Page three. Page seven. The word shield in plain black ink.

Forty.

Eleanor says nothing. She doesn't need to. Her silence is the whole point.

One hundred.

I stand up. My legs hold. I'm proud of that too.

---

The bathroom mirror is unforgiving. That's always been its job.

I peel the dress down slowly and turn my back to the glass and look over my shoulder. The welts are already darkening — a map of someone else's hatred drawn on my skin. I reach back and trace one with my fingertip. The pain is specific and clean.

I stay there for a long time.

This is the moment I will remember later, when people ask me when it ended. Not the files. Not Omar's careless laugh at the dinner table. Not even the threat about my mother's grave.

This. This bathroom. This mirror. The particular quiet of a woman finally hearing herself think.

My love for Samson Nichols doesn't die all at once. It begins to die here, in increments, like a light someone is slowly turning down.

---

Three weeks later, I'm sitting in the third row of a Nichols-hosted industry event in a ballroom that cost more to decorate than most people earn in a year. There are flowers everywhere. White ones. The kind you'd see at a funeral.

Camilla takes the podium in a pale grey dress that makes her look like morning light. She is extraordinary at this — the soft voice, the grateful eyes, the slight tremor in her hands that makes everyone in the room want to protect her.

"I am so deeply honored," she says, "to bring this story to life. And I want to thank Samson — from the bottom of my heart — for entrusting me with something so beautiful. So important."

She pauses. The room is very still.

"The screenplay is called Phoenix," she says. "And I think you'll understand why, when you see it, it felt like it was written for this moment."

My fingernails find my palms. I press until I feel the sting.

Phoenix. My mother's handwriting in a cracked notebook. Ten years of her life. The story she told me about when I was twelve, sitting on our apartment floor eating cereal for dinner because the electricity had been cut. She said, one day I'm going to write the most important story anyone's ever told. I believed her. I still believe her.

Camilla smiles at the applause.

I smile too. I have learned to do that.

---

His office. That evening. The door barely closed behind me before my voice comes out — loud, which surprises us both.

"That screenplay belongs to my mother."

Samson looks up from his desk. Just his eyes. The rest of him doesn't move.

"It's registered under the family's entertainment holdings," he says. "It has been for two years."

"You had no right —"

"It needed a proper platform." He sets down his pen. "Camilla has the connections to produce it correctly. You should be grateful it's being made at all."

The word grateful lands like a hand around my throat.

"She is going to put her name on my mother's story."

"Her name will bring attention to it that yours, frankly, cannot guarantee right now." He picks the pen back up. "You'll appear with her at the production launch. You'll give interviews. You'll be supportive and you'll be gracious, and you will not make this into something embarrassing for this family."

"And if I don't?"

He doesn't look up. "You know the answer to that."

I do. My mother's grave. Unmarked. Disposed of. He said those words to me like they were a business clause.

I stand in front of his desk and look at the top of his head — the dark hair, the set of his shoulders, the absolute certainty of a man who has never once considered that I might be a person rather than a position.

He resumes writing.

He does not look up again.

I walk out. I close the door quietly, because I have learned that my anger is most dangerous when it makes no sound at all.

In the hallway, I press my back against the wall and breathe.

The light in my chest — the one I've been turning down since that bathroom mirror, since that leather strap, since page seven — dims a little further.

Not gone yet.

But I can feel the direction it's heading.

I sat in a Louis XV-style chair that cost more than my entire education, picking at the peeling leather of my thrift-store handbag. Across the mahogany table, Council Bartlett didn't even look at me; he just checked his watch, treating our marriage like a corporate merger that needed to be finalized before the market closed. To the world, I was a gold digger hitting the lottery, but I was actually a woman with a secret I guarded more fiercely than a state secret. I had one week to show a social worker a stable home with a husband, or they would take my four-year-old nephew, Leo, and put him back into the system forever. The ink was barely dry on our marriage certificate when my world started to fracture. My aunt called, screaming for help as her drunk husband broke into her house, forcing me to leave my new "billionaire husband" in my cramped Queens apartment to handle a domestic nightmare with a baseball bat and pepper spray. When I returned, smelling of cheap whiskey and sweat, I found Council’s mother—the ice-cold Hortense—waiting on a video call. She didn't just want a business arrangement; she wanted an heir, and she’d already sent a box of fertility drugs to my kitchen counter to prove it. I was living a lie in a tenement building, caught between a man who treated me like a line item and a social worker who viewed my life as a "phantom." Council was sleeping on my lumpy sofa, his expensive legs dangling off the end, while I locked the bedroom door every night. I didn't want his money; I just wanted my boy. But how could I survive a war where the enemy lived in a penthouse and the casualties were measured in custody hearings? Just as Council saw me holding Leo and the "Ice King" finally began to thaw, his phone buzzed with an anonymous threat. "I know you're faking it. Pay me 100k or the press gets the story." The blackmailer was someone inside the Bartlett estate, and the "shield" I had built for Leo was about to become our cage.

For five years, I was Brogan Walton’s shadow—a contract companion kept behind closed doors, hidden away because of a cruel, fabricated rumor about my genetic health. I lived for the moments he looked my way, even if those moments were cold and transactional. Everything shattered when he returned from London early, tossed a legal document onto the table, and coldly announced the termination of our contract. He didn't just want me gone; he wanted me erased, offering a severance package to ensure I never spoke of the life I’d traded for his protection. As I signed the papers, my chest burned with the familiar, suffocating agony of my failing heart. I watched him check his watch, his impatience a blade in my back. When the door slammed shut, I finally collapsed, clutching the pill bottle that was my only lifeline, realizing I was dying—and he didn't care. I wasn't a lover or even a person to him. The next day, I saw her—Kori Barnett, the new CEO, the woman Brogan actually loved. She looked identical to me, down to the curve of her smile. I was never a Cinderella; I was just a cheap, disposable stand-in he’d groomed to be a mirror for his true obsession. Broken and discarded, I walked into the office, dropped my badge on the desk, and finally walked away. But as I stepped onto the street, I realized the nightmare wasn't over. A predator from his past was waiting for me, and when I looked at Brogan for help, he simply rolled up his window and drove away. I realized then that I had nothing left to lose. I took a deep breath, gripped the knife in my pocket, and decided that if I was going to die, I wouldn't go down as his victim.
