Chapter 3

The message takes me four days to write.

Not because I don't know what to say. I've known what to say since the bathroom mirror, since the leather strap, since I stood in Samson's office and watched him pick up his pen like I wasn't there. I know exactly what to say.

The problem is that saying it makes it real. And real means no going back.

I write it on the fifth day. Eleven words.

*I need help. Not yet. But soon.*

I send it through Petra Voss — a costume designer I've worked with on three films, one of the few people in this industry who exists completely outside the Nichols orbit. She doesn't ask questions. She's the kind of woman who has seen enough to know when not to ask.

Lucien Harper responds in fifty-three minutes.

*I know. I've been ready.*

I read it twice. Then I delete it. Then I sit on the edge of the bed in the room that has always felt more like a display case than a room, and I press my thumb against the cover of my mother's screenplay until I can feel the cardboard bend.

He's been ready.

Somewhere in the back of my mind, behind the grief and the exhaustion and the specific numbness that comes from living inside a lie for four years, something shifts. Small. Like a window opening in a room that's been sealed too long.

I don't let myself feel it yet. Feeling it too early is how you make mistakes.

I close my eyes and go over the plan instead. The parts I know. The parts I don't know yet. The shape of the thing I'm building in the dark.

---

The story breaks on a Tuesday.

I see it first on my tablet, the one Samson doesn't know about — a prepaid device I keep behind the false panel in my closet, the one place in this house that belongs entirely to me. The headline is small. Tucked into a gossip column between a studio merger and a starlet's breakup.

*Sources close to the set say Patterson has been increasingly erratic. Missed cues. Emotional outbursts. One insider says she's been impossible to work with for months.*

I read it three times.

There is no set. I haven't been on a set in eight months. Samson made sure of that — scheduling conflicts, family obligations, the quiet administrative suffocation of a woman whose calendar is managed by her husband's assistant.

There is no insider. There is only Camilla, in her pale grey dress, with her soft voice and her strategic patience, feeding a columnist exactly what she needs him to print.

The second story comes two days later. Different outlet. Same fingerprints.

*Nichols connections behind Patterson's Golden Globe wins? Industry insiders question whether the actress's recent awards reflect genuine merit or her husband's considerable industry influence.*

I sit with that one for a long time.

Four years. Two Golden Globes. Meridian alone required six months of preparation — dialect coaching, physical training, a performance I built from the ground up in a role that three other actresses turned down as too difficult. I know what I did to earn those wins. I know it in my body, in the specific exhaustion of doing something completely.

And still. The words land somewhere soft and do their damage.

That's what she's counting on.

---

Samson comes to find me that evening.

He doesn't mention the stories. He never mentions things directly — that's not how he works. He stands in the doorway of the sitting room and looks at me with that particular expression I've spent four years trying to read, and he says, very calmly, that he's asked Marcus to expand my security detail.

"I don't need more security," I say.

"It's a precaution." He straightens a candlestick on the mantle. Just slightly. "You've been spending time on the phone. I want to make sure you're protected."

Protected.

I look at his hands. The way they move over objects in this room like everything in it belongs to him. Because everything in it does.

"Protected from what?" I ask.

"From people who might take advantage of your position." He turns. "You're a Nichols. People approach you with agendas. It's important to be careful about who you speak to."

Camilla told him something. Not the truth — she doesn't know the truth. But something. Enough to make him tighten the perimeter.

"Of course," I say.

He holds my gaze for a moment. Looking for the crack. Looking for the place where I've come loose.

I give him nothing.

After he leaves, I go to the window and look out at the compound — the lights, the walls, the particular geometry of a place designed to keep things in as much as out — and I think about Lucien's four words.

*I know. I've been ready.*

The light in my chest — the one I've been turning down for weeks — doesn't dim tonight.

For the first time in a long time, it does something else entirely.

It steadies.

I sat in a Louis XV-style chair that cost more than my entire education, picking at the peeling leather of my thrift-store handbag. Across the mahogany table, Council Bartlett didn't even look at me; he just checked his watch, treating our marriage like a corporate merger that needed to be finalized before the market closed. To the world, I was a gold digger hitting the lottery, but I was actually a woman with a secret I guarded more fiercely than a state secret. I had one week to show a social worker a stable home with a husband, or they would take my four-year-old nephew, Leo, and put him back into the system forever. The ink was barely dry on our marriage certificate when my world started to fracture. My aunt called, screaming for help as her drunk husband broke into her house, forcing me to leave my new "billionaire husband" in my cramped Queens apartment to handle a domestic nightmare with a baseball bat and pepper spray. When I returned, smelling of cheap whiskey and sweat, I found Council’s mother—the ice-cold Hortense—waiting on a video call. She didn't just want a business arrangement; she wanted an heir, and she’d already sent a box of fertility drugs to my kitchen counter to prove it. I was living a lie in a tenement building, caught between a man who treated me like a line item and a social worker who viewed my life as a "phantom." Council was sleeping on my lumpy sofa, his expensive legs dangling off the end, while I locked the bedroom door every night. I didn't want his money; I just wanted my boy. But how could I survive a war where the enemy lived in a penthouse and the casualties were measured in custody hearings? Just as Council saw me holding Leo and the "Ice King" finally began to thaw, his phone buzzed with an anonymous threat. "I know you're faking it. Pay me 100k or the press gets the story." The blackmailer was someone inside the Bartlett estate, and the "shield" I had built for Leo was about to become our cage.

For five years, I was Brogan Walton’s shadow—a contract companion kept behind closed doors, hidden away because of a cruel, fabricated rumor about my genetic health. I lived for the moments he looked my way, even if those moments were cold and transactional. Everything shattered when he returned from London early, tossed a legal document onto the table, and coldly announced the termination of our contract. He didn't just want me gone; he wanted me erased, offering a severance package to ensure I never spoke of the life I’d traded for his protection. As I signed the papers, my chest burned with the familiar, suffocating agony of my failing heart. I watched him check his watch, his impatience a blade in my back. When the door slammed shut, I finally collapsed, clutching the pill bottle that was my only lifeline, realizing I was dying—and he didn't care. I wasn't a lover or even a person to him. The next day, I saw her—Kori Barnett, the new CEO, the woman Brogan actually loved. She looked identical to me, down to the curve of her smile. I was never a Cinderella; I was just a cheap, disposable stand-in he’d groomed to be a mirror for his true obsession. Broken and discarded, I walked into the office, dropped my badge on the desk, and finally walked away. But as I stepped onto the street, I realized the nightmare wasn't over. A predator from his past was waiting for me, and when I looked at Brogan for help, he simply rolled up his window and drove away. I realized then that I had nothing left to lose. I took a deep breath, gripped the knife in my pocket, and decided that if I was going to die, I wouldn't go down as his victim.
