Chapter 1

The dress is red.

Deep, deliberate red — the same shade I wore the night I won my first Golden Globe four years ago. I picked it on purpose. A private joke between me and myself, because there is no one else in this room to share it with.

The dressing room is on the third floor of the Nichols compound, a space that has always felt more like a display case than a room. Crown molding. A chandelier that's too large. Mirrors on three walls so you can never quite escape your own reflection. Samson had it designed for me, he said. A gift.

I sit in the chair in front of the center mirror and watch myself watch the small television in the corner. The volume is low. The ballroom on screen is all gold light and sequined shoulders and the particular electric hum of an industry celebrating itself.

The presenter opens the envelope.

"And the Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Drama goes to—"

I already know. My publicist texted me twenty minutes ago, before Samson took my phone.

"Anastasia Patterson, for Meridian."

The room applauds. My empty seat applauds by proxy. Somewhere sixty miles from here, a golden statue sits on a stage with no one to claim it.

I press my thumb into the arm of the chair until I feel the wood grain.

The door opens at eleven. Samson doesn't knock. He never has.

He's still in his dinner jacket from the Nichols charity gala — the one Camilla Howell hosted, the one that required my absence so that no cameras would drift from her careful, curated grief toward the inconvenient fact of his wife. He looks at the television, then at me, and his expression does not change.

"Congratulations," he says. It sounds like a weather report.

"I wasn't there." My voice comes out steady. I'm proud of that.

"The gala was a prior commitment. You knew that."

"I knew you told me I couldn't go. I didn't know why until I saw the photos from Camilla's event."

Something shifts in his jaw. Just slightly. "Your reaction is embarrassing."

"I won a Golden Globe tonight, Samson. Alone. In a locked room."

"Your career," he says, "is not the family's highest priority."

And there it is. Clean and flat and absolute, the way he says everything. I look at his face — the face I have memorized, the face I thought I loved — and for the first time I notice how the sentence didn't end with *my* name. It ended with *her* comfort. It always ends there.

I file that away and say nothing more.

Three days later, Omar Nichols drinks too much at Sunday dinner. He's charming when he drinks — looser, warmer, the kind of warm that makes you trust him slightly more than you should. He's talking about the gala, about the press coverage, and then he laughs and says, "Honestly, Samson, she's been useful for exactly what you needed her for."

The table goes quiet.

Not long. Maybe two seconds. Eleanor lifts her wine glass. Camilla, seated across from me in her usual ivory, touches her collarbone and looks at the centerpiece. Samson's expression doesn't change.

I smile. I have learned to smile at this table the way you learn to smile through a blood draw — controlled, surface-level, completely disconnected from what's happening underneath.

That night, I go into Samson's private study.

The files aren't hidden. That's almost the worst part. They're in the second drawer, in a folder labeled with our engagement year, and they are thorough. Emails between Samson and his attorney. Strategic assessments. My public profile. My Q-score. My relationship with the press. A line that reads: *Eleanor-buffer potential: significant.* The word *shield* appears on page three. And again on page seven.

I sit with those pages for a long time.

I spend three days being very quiet and very careful. I go back through the years in my head — every time Eleanor's cruelty landed on me instead of Camilla, every time Samson positioned my body between his mother's wrath and that woman's comfort, every sacrifice I made that I told myself was love. I cross-reference. I verify. I build the architecture from the inside out until it is undeniable.

I was installed. I was deployed. I was never loved.

On the fourth day, Samson comes to find me.

He tells me a piece of jewelry has gone missing from the family vault. He tells me Eleanor is demanding accountability. He tells me, in the flat tone of a man reading from a list, that I will confess to Eleanor and accept the punishment.

I say no.

It's the first time in four years I've said that word to him. It feels like stepping off a ledge.

He looks at me for a moment. Then he says, quietly, that if I refuse, he will have my mother's remains exhumed from the Nichols family cemetery plot. Disposed of. Unmarked.

My mother. Vera Patterson. Who wrote *Phoenix* by hand in a notebook with a cracked spine, who died before anyone called her brilliant, who I buried in this family's ground because I believed I was part of this family.

The word *no* dissolves in my throat.

I look at my husband's face.

And I understand, finally, completely, what I am to him.

I sat in a Louis XV-style chair that cost more than my entire education, picking at the peeling leather of my thrift-store handbag. Across the mahogany table, Council Bartlett didn't even look at me; he just checked his watch, treating our marriage like a corporate merger that needed to be finalized before the market closed. To the world, I was a gold digger hitting the lottery, but I was actually a woman with a secret I guarded more fiercely than a state secret. I had one week to show a social worker a stable home with a husband, or they would take my four-year-old nephew, Leo, and put him back into the system forever. The ink was barely dry on our marriage certificate when my world started to fracture. My aunt called, screaming for help as her drunk husband broke into her house, forcing me to leave my new "billionaire husband" in my cramped Queens apartment to handle a domestic nightmare with a baseball bat and pepper spray. When I returned, smelling of cheap whiskey and sweat, I found Council’s mother—the ice-cold Hortense—waiting on a video call. She didn't just want a business arrangement; she wanted an heir, and she’d already sent a box of fertility drugs to my kitchen counter to prove it. I was living a lie in a tenement building, caught between a man who treated me like a line item and a social worker who viewed my life as a "phantom." Council was sleeping on my lumpy sofa, his expensive legs dangling off the end, while I locked the bedroom door every night. I didn't want his money; I just wanted my boy. But how could I survive a war where the enemy lived in a penthouse and the casualties were measured in custody hearings? Just as Council saw me holding Leo and the "Ice King" finally began to thaw, his phone buzzed with an anonymous threat. "I know you're faking it. Pay me 100k or the press gets the story." The blackmailer was someone inside the Bartlett estate, and the "shield" I had built for Leo was about to become our cage.

For five years, I was Brogan Walton’s shadow—a contract companion kept behind closed doors, hidden away because of a cruel, fabricated rumor about my genetic health. I lived for the moments he looked my way, even if those moments were cold and transactional. Everything shattered when he returned from London early, tossed a legal document onto the table, and coldly announced the termination of our contract. He didn't just want me gone; he wanted me erased, offering a severance package to ensure I never spoke of the life I’d traded for his protection. As I signed the papers, my chest burned with the familiar, suffocating agony of my failing heart. I watched him check his watch, his impatience a blade in my back. When the door slammed shut, I finally collapsed, clutching the pill bottle that was my only lifeline, realizing I was dying—and he didn't care. I wasn't a lover or even a person to him. The next day, I saw her—Kori Barnett, the new CEO, the woman Brogan actually loved. She looked identical to me, down to the curve of her smile. I was never a Cinderella; I was just a cheap, disposable stand-in he’d groomed to be a mirror for his true obsession. Broken and discarded, I walked into the office, dropped my badge on the desk, and finally walked away. But as I stepped onto the street, I realized the nightmare wasn't over. A predator from his past was waiting for me, and when I looked at Brogan for help, he simply rolled up his window and drove away. I realized then that I had nothing left to lose. I took a deep breath, gripped the knife in my pocket, and decided that if I was going to die, I wouldn't go down as his victim.
