Chapter 2

The statement dropped at 7 a.m.

I was sitting on the floor of Leo's room when my phone started going off. Not his hospital room—his room here, in the penthouse I was still technically allowed to occupy until the divorce finalized. The one with the crayon drawings taped to the wall and the plastic dinosaurs lined up on the windowsill in an order only he understood.

I read the statement twice.

*Recent DNA testing has confirmed that the child formerly identified as Leo Harrison is not my biological son. I have been living with this devastating truth in private while doing everything in my power to protect my family. I can no longer remain silent.*

Former. Formerly identified.

He had already erased Leo's name.

I set the phone face-down on the carpet. I looked at the drawings on the wall—a lopsided sun, a blue dog, what I was pretty sure was supposed to be me holding his hand, both of us with too many fingers. I pressed my thumb into my wrist until I could feel my own pulse.

Then my phone lit up again. And again. And again.

By nine o'clock, I had forty-seven messages. By ten, I had stopped counting. Former friends, acquaintances, the kind of women who air-kissed you at charity galas and remembered your dress but not your name. A few of them expressed sympathy in the specific way people do when they've already decided you're guilty. Most of them said nothing at all, which was its own kind of message.

The Morris Family Foundation board requested an emergency meeting.

I stared at that one for a long time.

I didn't respond to any of it. I just sat there on the floor of my son's empty room, surrounded by his things, while Manhattan made up its mind about me.

Kellen had built his story well. The video first—plant the doubt, let it spread, let people's imaginations do the work. Then the DNA statement, arriving like a verdict on something the jury had already decided. He knew how this city worked. He'd been working it his entire life.

The thing about a lie told loudly enough is that the truth has to earn its way back into the room. The truth has to fight.

I could do that.

---

I noticed the anomalies that afternoon.

I wasn't looking for them. I was going through the hit-and-run file for the hundredth time—the police report, the witness statements, the case closure summary that had arrived eight months ago with the kind of clean, efficient finality that should have felt like relief and never did.

The detective who'd led the investigation. Retired two weeks after the case closed. Thirty-one years on the force, and he walked away at fifty-four with no announcement, no farewell, no record of where he went.

The driver. Never identified. A vehicle caught on two traffic cameras, plates obscured both times. The report noted this without apparent curiosity.

I read it again. Then again.

Two cameras. Both obscured. A detective who retired the moment the case was sealed.

I sat very still for a moment. Then I picked up my phone and called a number I'd gotten three days ago from a journalist who owed me a favor she'd never expected to repay.

---

Nate Calloway was already in the diner booth when I arrived. He was the kind of man who looked like furniture until you looked directly at him—medium height, unremarkable jacket, eyes that didn't miss anything. He had a manila folder on the table and a cup of coffee he hadn't touched.

I sat down across from him.

'How bad is it?' I asked.

'Depends on your definition.' He slid the folder across the table. 'It's clean work. Whoever set it up knew what they were doing. Four shell companies, two offshore accounts, a wire transfer that bounced through the Caymans and Singapore before it landed.' He paused. 'But it landed.'

I opened the folder.

The pages were dense—account numbers, transfer dates, corporate registration documents. I read through it slowly, the way you read something you need to understand completely before you let yourself feel anything about it.

At the bottom of the third page was a name.

A Harrison account. One of the private ones, not the corporate structure. Personal.

I closed the folder.

I sat motionless for sixty seconds. I know because I counted.

Then I looked up at Nate Calloway and said, 'How long to build the rest of it? Enough that it's airtight. Enough that there's no room for a counter-narrative.'

He studied me for a moment. Something shifted in his expression—not pity, which I wouldn't have tolerated. Something more like recalibration.

'Three weeks,' he said. 'Maybe two if the offshore records cooperate.'

'Two,' I said. 'Make it two.'

I signaled for coffee. Outside the diner window, Manhattan moved past in its usual relentless way, indifferent and bright.

I thought about Leo's drawings on the wall. The lopsided sun. The blue dog. The figure holding his hand with too many fingers.

I thought about the word *formerly*.

I wrapped both hands around the coffee mug when it arrived and let the warmth move through my palms.

Two weeks.
