Chapter 3

I started with the money.

Not because it was the most important thing. Because it was the most provable. Numbers don't have feelings. They don't get confused under pressure or change their story when a lawyer leans on them. They just sit there, patient and exact, waiting for someone to read them correctly.

Nate sent me the first batch of financial records on a Thursday. By Friday I had them cross-referenced against the shell company registrations he'd pulled from Singapore. By Saturday I had a timeline. Clean, sequential, irrefutable. The wire transfer that had paid for my son's hit-and-run traced back through four accounts and two offshore structures and landed, at the end of all that careful laundering, in a Harrison private account.

Kellen's account.

I printed the pages and put them in a grey folder and set the folder in the fireproof lockbox I'd bought with cash from a hardware store in Midtown. Then I went back to work.

The cold storage documentation was next. I'd had the presence of mind, in the hours after Marta pulled me out, to photograph my hands. The bruising. The raw skin across my knuckles where I'd pounded the walls. I'd done it automatically, the way you do things when some part of your brain has already decided it's going to survive this and is quietly collecting evidence. The building's maintenance logs showed the door had been manually locked from the outside. The temperature logs showed it had been running at seventeen degrees below zero for four hours.

I added those to the lockbox.

Kellen's communications with Aspyn were harder. But not impossible. I had three years of credit card statements, hotel records, a pattern of calls to a number registered to a shell identity that dissolved six months ago. I had a former Harrison household staff member—not Marta, someone else, someone who'd been let go without severance and had nothing left to protect—who was willing to give a written statement about what she'd seen and heard.

I added that too.

The prenuptial violations were almost elegant in their simplicity. Kellen had signed the divorce agreement without reading it. I had watched his pen move across the page and felt something cold and certain settle in my chest. His lawyer had been present. The document was witnessed and notarized. He had left with nothing because he had believed, in those final days of his performed dying, that nothing was all he needed.

He had been wrong about that. He'd been wrong about a lot of things.

Every morning, before I opened my laptop, I drove to the hospital.

I made the blueberry pancakes at home—too much syrup, always, because that was how Leo liked them—and carried them in a covered container and set them on his bedside table. The nurses had stopped questioning it months ago. One of them, a woman named Grace who worked the early shift, had started leaving a small vase of flowers beside the plate without being asked.

I would sit for an hour. Sometimes I talked to him. Sometimes I just read. Sometimes I sat in the chair by the window and looked at his hands on the white sheets and didn't think about anything at all.

I was doing exactly that on a Tuesday afternoon when the door opened.

I didn't look up immediately. Visitors came and went. Doctors. Nurses. The occasional social worker who wanted to discuss long-term care options in a tone I'd learned to shut down inside of thirty seconds.

But this was different. The quality of the silence in the room changed.

I looked up.

The man standing in the doorway was tall, with Kellen's bone structure and none of Kellen's coldness. He was looking at Leo. Not at me. He hadn't even registered me yet, or if he had, it didn't matter to him in that moment. He was looking at my son's hands resting on the white sheets, and whatever he saw there had stopped him completely.

I had seen that face before. Not this man—this specific man I had never met. But that face. Those hands.

My thumb pressed into the inside of my wrist.

He stood there for what felt like a long time. Then, without a word, without looking at me, he walked to the chair on the other side of Leo's bed. He sat down. He reached into the bag he was carrying and pulled out a thick medical textbook. He opened it to somewhere near the middle.

And he started to read aloud. Low and steady, like the words were something Leo's brain could reach for even through the silence.

I didn't speak.

I didn't ask who he was.

I already knew. I had known the moment I saw his hands.

I looked down at my own lap and pressed my thumb harder into my wrist and breathed through my nose, slow and even, while the man who was my son's father read neurology to a boy who couldn't hear him yet.

Outside the window, Manhattan moved past in its usual relentless way.

I stayed.
