Chapter 2

I began with the texts. On Thursday morning, Dillon left his phone on the kitchen counter while he showered. The screen lit up with a notification from Lola: 'Can't stop thinking about last night.' I took my own phone out of my pocket, opened my camera, and took a photograph of his screen. The timestamp was 8:17 AM. I saved it to an encrypted folder in my cloud storage. The folder was labeled 'London Project.' He would never look there.

The credit card statements came next. I sat at the kitchen island with three months of printed statements spread out in front of me, a highlighter in my hand. The Archer Hotel on 38th Street: $389 on a Tuesday afternoon three weeks ago. The kind of boutique hotel that advertises 'discreet check-in.' Le Petit Bistro: a $200 dinner for two on the night I'd been in Boston for a conference. I highlighted them all, took photographs, saved them to the folder.

Then I found the Venmo transfers. Dillon thought I didn't know his password. He was wrong. I logged in from my laptop while he was at the gym and saw them: small transfers at first, $50 here, $100 there, labeled 'coffee' or 'book.' Then larger ones: $500, $750, labeled 'rent help.' Rent help. I took screenshots, saved them, and logged out.

Lola's Instagram was the worst part. I scrolled through her feed methodically, and with each post, something cold and heavy settled deeper in my chest. There was my kitchen, shot from the corner where the afternoon light came through the windows just so. There was my terrace, the view of the Hudson River that I'd fallen in love with seven years ago. There was my dinner table, set with my grandmother's china, wine glasses catching the light. The captions made my stomach turn: 'Nothing better than hosting dinner at home with the ones who get it.' 'Some spaces just feel like they were made for you.' 'Grateful for this view. Every. Single. Day.'

I took screenshots of everything. Every post, every comment, every tag. I saved them to the folder. The evidence was building, piece by piece, and with each new discovery, I felt something inside me harden. Not break. Harden.

On Tuesday evening, I was making pasta. The water boiled over, and when I reached for the cast-iron pan to move it, I grabbed the handle without a towel. The pain was immediate and blinding. I yanked my hand back and stuck it under cold water, but the damage was done. A blistering red burn stretched across my palm, already starting to swell.

'Jesus, Wave!' Dillon appeared in the kitchen doorway. 'We need to get you to the ER. That looks bad.'

He drove us toward Mount Sinai. I held my hand in my lap, a dish towel wrapped around it, watching the city lights blur through the window. Six blocks from home, his phone rang through the car speakers. Lola's voice filled the car: 'Dillon, I'm sorry to call, but there's a leak in my bathroom ceiling, and the super isn't answering, and I'm kind of freaking out—'

'Someone's probably home,' I said quietly. 'Call the super again.'

But Dillon was already slowing the car. 'It'll just take a minute,' he said. 'She's probably alone up there. I can't—'

'Can't what?' I asked. 'Can't let her handle a leak by herself?'

He pulled over. We were on 73rd Street, outside a corner bodega. He put the car in park and turned to me. 'Take a cab the rest of the way. I'll meet you at the hospital in twenty minutes. I promise.'

I looked at him. I looked at my burned hand, wrapped in a dish towel. I looked at the car that was no longer moving.

'Right,' I said. 'A cab.'

He nodded, already reaching for the door handle. 'Twenty minutes, Wave. I swear.'

I watched him drive away. I watched his taillights disappear into traffic. I sat on the curb outside the bodega, my hand throbbing, and felt something inside me go very, very quiet.

The dish towel was turning red from the blister that had burst. I pressed it closer, and when that didn't help, I pressed harder. The pain was clean, immediate, honest. It was the most honest thing I'd felt all week.

For three years, I was the perfect, invisible wife to Bart Brown. On our third anniversary, I stood in the kitchen for four hours, preparing his favorite meal with imported truffles, only to receive a cold text command. "Crysta fainted again. Get to the hospital. Now." My rare Rh-negative blood was the only thing the Brown family valued. Bart didn't want a wife; he wanted a walking blood bank for his "sick" best friend, Crysta. While I was fainting from chronic anemia, Crysta was smirking in her hospital bed, clutching Bart's hand and mocking my "peasant" lifestyle. Even his mother treated me like a servant, demanding I vacuum the floors after I'd already offered my veins for the hundredth time. When I finally reached my breaking point and signed the divorce papers, they didn't let me go quietly. They filed a false police report, accusing me of stealing a multi-million dollar diamond necklace just to watch me crawl. I didn't understand how a family could be so heartless. I had cooked their meals, cleaned their house, and literally bled for them, yet they were determined to ruin my life the moment I stopped being useful. Did they really think I was a nobody with nowhere to go? Standing outside the hospital with a bruised wrist and nothing to my name, I didn't cry. I simply took off my cheap wedding ring and dialed a secure line I hadn't touched since the day I married him. "It's me, Dad," I whispered as a fleet of black Maybachs rounded the corner. "The extraction is a go. I'm coming home."
