Chapter 4

I pulled my phone back out. My thumb found the emergency call button without looking. I pressed it.

The dispatcher answered on the second ring. Her voice was professional, distant. "911. What's your emergency?"

"I need to report a bigamy," I said. My voice didn't shake. That surprised me. Everything inside felt like it was collapsing, but my voice came out level and clear. "I'm at 247 Maple Street. A woman is presenting a forged marriage certificate. My legal marriage license number is—"

I recited the number from memory. I'd filled out the paperwork myself seven years ago. I remembered the clerk's office in Albany. The fluorescent lights. The way Jared had squeezed my hand while we waited.

"I need verification of both certificates," I continued. "Mine is registered in Albany County. Hers claims to be from Jefferson County. One of them is fake."

The dispatcher's typing stopped. "Ma'am, are you in immediate danger?"

"No. But I need an officer here to verify—"

"Someone will be there shortly."

The line went dead.

I lowered the phone. Briella was watching me with an expression I couldn't quite read. Not worried. Something closer to irritation, like I'd just made things inconvenient.

"You're really going to do this?" she asked. "On Christmas Eve?"

I didn't answer. I stood in the center of the living room and waited.

The neighbors were still gathered on the porch. Their murmurs had quieted, but I could feel their eyes. Peter moved to stand beside Jared. Mrs. Olson put her hand on Tyler's shoulder, guiding him toward the stairs. "Go to your room, sweetie," she said softly.

The boy looked between his father and me, confused. Then he went.

The cruiser pulled up four minutes later. I timed it on my phone. Four minutes was fast. Too fast for a rural dispatch on Christmas Eve.

The officer who stepped out was broad-shouldered, maybe fifty, with the kind of face that smiled easily. He nodded to the neighbors as he walked up the path. When he reached the porch, Briella opened the door wider.

"Dale," she said, and her voice was warm. Familiar. "Thank you for coming."

Dale. First name basis.

Sheriff Dale Pruitt stepped inside, brushing snow off his jacket. He looked at Briella first. "You okay?"

"We're fine," she said. "Just... this has been going on for a while now."

Pruitt turned to me. His smile stayed in place, but his eyes were flat. "Ma'am. I understand you called about a marriage certificate?"

I held up my phone. "I have my marriage license information here. I need you to verify it against the certificate she's holding. One of them is forged."

Briella handed Pruitt the laminated document without hesitation. He examined it, tilting it toward the light. He nodded slowly. "This looks legitimate to me."

"You need to verify it," I said. My voice was still calm. That was important. Stay calm. Stay precise. "Contact the county clerk's office. Run both license numbers. One of them will come back invalid."

Pruitt handed the certificate back to Briella. "Ma'am, the clerk's office is closed. It's Christmas Eve."

"Then call the on-call clerk. This is a felony. Document fraud. Bigamy. You can verify—"

"What I can verify," Pruitt interrupted, and his voice hardened just slightly, "is that you're trespassing on private property and harassing a family on Christmas Eve."

I stared at him. "I'm reporting a crime."

"You're making accusations you can't prove right now." He gestured toward the door. "I'm going to need you to leave."

"I have proof. My marriage license number is—"

"Ma'am." He stepped closer. "You need to leave. Now."

I didn't move. I looked past him at Jared, who was standing beside Briella with his arm still around her shoulders. "Tell him," I said. "Tell him the truth."

Jared's face didn't change.

Pruitt sighed. "Ma'am, I'm not going to ask again."

"I'm not leaving until you verify—"

His hand closed around my upper arm. The grip was immediate and hard, fingers digging through the wool of my coat. Pain shot up to my shoulder.

"You're leaving," he said, and his voice was flat now, all pretense of courtesy gone. "Or I'm charging you with harassment and criminal trespass."

I tried to pull my arm back. His grip tightened. I could feel my pulse hammering against his fingers.

"You're hurting me," I said.

He didn't let go. He started walking toward the door, pulling me with him. My boots slid on the hardwood. I tried to plant my feet, but he was stronger, and the momentum carried me forward.

The neighbors on the porch stepped back as Pruitt dragged me through the doorway. The cold air hit my face. Snow was falling harder now, thick flakes that stuck to my hair.

"Don't come back here," Pruitt said. He released my arm with a small shove. I stumbled on the top step, caught myself on the railing. "If I get another call about you, you're spending the night in a cell. Understand?"

I looked at him. At the badge on his chest. At the neighbors watching from the yard.

I looked back through the open door at Jared.

He turned away.

Pruitt stepped between us, blocking my view. "Go home," he said.

The door closed.

I stood on the porch in the falling snow. My arm throbbed where Pruitt had grabbed it. The neighbors were dispersing now, shaking their heads, muttering to each other as they walked back to their houses.

I was alone.
