Chapter 2

The woman's smile didn't waver. She stepped forward, positioning herself between me and Jared like a barrier made of flesh and bone and absolute certainty. Her dress was burgundy silk, the kind that whispered money without screaming it. Her earrings caught the light from the Christmas tree.

"I'm Briella," she said, extending her hand as though we were meeting at a cocktail party. "Jared's wife."

The words hung in the air like smoke. I stared at her hand—manicured nails, a diamond ring that caught the light—and didn't take it.

"That's not possible," I said. My voice sounded distant, like it was coming from someone else's throat. "I'm his wife."

Briella's smile widened. She withdrew her hand and gestured toward the boy at the table, who was watching us with the wide-eyed fascination of a child witnessing something he doesn't understand but knows is important.

"This is our son, Tyler," she said, her voice dripping with exaggerated sympathy. "He's five. We've been together for seven years, honey. I think you clearly don't know your place here."

The word honey landed like a slap. She said it the way you'd speak to a confused child or a stray dog that had wandered into the wrong yard.

I turned to Jared. He was still sitting at the table, his back rigid, his hands gripping the edge so hard his knuckles had gone white. "Jared," I said, and my voice cracked on his name. "Look at me."

He didn't move.

"Jared." Louder now, sharp enough to cut through whatever paralysis had seized him. "Look at me and tell me what this is."

The silence stretched. I could hear the Christmas music still playing softly from somewhere—*Silent Night*—and the sound of my own breathing, too fast, too shallow. Jared's jaw worked like he was chewing words he couldn't swallow.

Then Mrs. Olson stepped out of the kitchen doorway, wiping her hands on a dish towel. Her face was composed, almost serene, the expression of a woman who had been expecting this moment and had prepared for it.

"I don't know who you are," she said quietly, "but you need to leave this family alone."

I turned to her, and the world tilted slightly. "Mrs. Olson," I said, and I hated how my voice shook. "It's me. Saylor. Your daughter-in-law."

She shook her head slowly, deliberately, like a teacher correcting a particularly stubborn student. "I have one daughter-in-law," she said, gesturing toward Briella. "And you're upsetting her on Christmas Eve."

The room was spinning now. I looked at Peter, who had moved to block the living room doorway, his arms crossed over his chest. I looked at Jared, who still wouldn't meet my eyes. I looked at the little boy—Tyler—who was clutching a toy truck and staring at me like I was a stranger who had invaded his home.

"Jared," I whispered. "Please."

Briella laughed—a soft, pitying sound that made my skin crawl. "Honey," she said again, and this time the word was a weapon, "I think you need to accept reality. Jared and I have built a life here. We have a son. We have a home. Whatever fantasy you've been living in needs to end."

Peter stepped forward, his voice rising just enough to carry beyond the room. The front door was still open—I could see faces gathering in the darkness beyond, neighbors drawn by the commotion, silhouettes against the snow.

"If you don't leave immediately," Peter announced, his voice pitched for the audience outside, "I'm calling the police. We don't know this woman. She's been showing up for months, harassing my son."

The lie was so brazen it took my breath away. I opened my mouth to respond, but no sound came out. My throat had closed around the words.

"Months," Mrs. Olson echoed, shaking her head with theatrical sadness. "We've tried to be patient, but this has to stop."

I looked at Jared one more time. He was still staring at the table, his face pale, his jaw clenched. For seven years, I had looked at this man and seen my future. Now I looked at him and saw a stranger.

"Say something," I whispered.

He didn't.

Briella moved closer, her perfume—something floral and expensive—filling the space between us. "You should go," she said softly, almost kindly. "Before this gets ugly."

The neighbors were murmuring now, their voices carrying through the open door. I could feel their eyes on me, their judgment settling over my shoulders like a weight.

I bent down and picked up the gift bags I'd dropped. The cashmere scarf. The bourbon. The leather journal. My hands were shaking so badly the bags rustled.

"I'm his wife," I said one more time, but my voice was barely audible, even to myself.

Briella smiled. "No, honey," she said. "You're not."
