When My Groom’s Mistress Wore a Wedding Dress Chapter 1

Tuesday mornings smelled like coffee and cold marble. I was halfway through my second cup when I remembered Jace's gray jacket, the one he'd worn to dinner with his mother on Sunday. The dry cleaner closed at noon.

I carried it down from the closet and laid it across the kitchen island. My hand slid into the breast pocket out of habit. Five years of being engaged to a man teaches you to check every pocket. Receipts. Mints. Cufflinks he'd taken off in the car.

My fingers brushed paper.

I pulled it out and smoothed it flat on the counter.

A parking ticket. New York City. Issued at 2:07 a.m. A Tribeca address I had never been to. Crosby Street.

I read it twice. Then a third time, slower, like the numbers might rearrange themselves into something I could explain.

Upstairs, the shower shut off. Pipes ticked behind the wall.

I took my phone out and photographed the ticket. Front. Back. Date. License plate. Then I set it down exactly where I had found it, right next to his keys, and went back to my coffee.

He came down ten minutes later in a fresh shirt, smelling like the same expensive cedar he'd worn since I'd met him. He kissed the top of my head. He picked up his keys. He picked up the ticket without looking at it, folded it once, and slid it into his pants pocket.

"You're up early," he said.

"Couldn't sleep."

He smiled. "Big day Saturday."

"Big day Saturday," I echoed.

He was out the door by eight. I sat at the island for a long time after that. The coffee went cold. I didn't move it.

***

At nine that night I told him I had a fitting. I drove to Crosby Street instead.

The building was new. Glass and dark stone. A doorman who didn't ask my name when I said I was visiting 4C. That told me something, too. The kind of place where women came and went and nobody wrote it down.

The elevator hummed. I watched my reflection in the brushed steel doors. Lipstick still neat. Hair still pinned. A woman on her way to confirm what she already knew.

The hallway on the fourth floor was carpeted in a deep, expensive gray. It swallowed the sound of my heels. I stopped two feet from the door of 4C. I could hear the low murmur of a television. And then, under it, voices.

I opened the voice memo app. I held the phone close to the seam of the door.

Jace's voice. I'd know it in any room, through any wall. Soft. Low. The voice he used when he was tired and meant what he was saying.

"You're the one I owed, Christina. I've always known that."

And then a woman's voice. A little breathy. A little pleased with itself.

"She would never need to know. She doesn't ask the right questions."

I stood there in that hallway and listened until I had four minutes of it. Until I heard him laugh at something she said. Until I heard the kind of silence two people make when they're done talking and going to do something else instead.

I hit stop. I saved the file. I named it nothing. I walked to the elevator and pressed the button like a person who had every right to be there.

In the car, in the parking garage, with my forehead against the steering wheel, I cried. Once. Hard. For about ninety seconds.

Then I pulled down the visor mirror, fixed my mascara with the pad of my ring finger, and drove home.

He slid into bed at three. He smelled like perfume that wasn't mine. Something floral and a little cheap, the way expensive things sometimes smell when they're worn by women who try too hard.

I lay on my side and breathed evenly and let five years rearrange themselves behind my closed eyes. The late nights. The business trips with no itinerary. The way he'd flinched, once, when I'd reached for his phone to set a timer. The way his mother had said, last Easter, *Jace has always been sentimental about old things,* and smiled at me like that meant something kind.

It did mean something. Just not what I had thought.

***

I made three phone calls before he opened his eyes.

The first was to London. A woman named Celeste Armor, whose voice was crisp and accented and a little amused at the hour. "Sapphire. We were beginning to wonder." I told her I would take the senior director role. Start date in three weeks. She didn't ask why I'd changed my mind. I liked her already.

The second was to my attorney. Certified copies of my fifty-one percent. By Friday. No, Jace doesn't need to be informed. Yes, I'm sure.

The third was to Murphy.

She picked up on the first ring like she'd been waiting since college.

"Saph."

"It's him," I said. "It's been him the whole time."

There was a pause, just long enough for me to hear her sit down somewhere.

"Tell me what you need me to do."

***

The week that followed was the cleanest week of my life.

I sat across from Mrs. Sullivan at a marble table on Madison and approved peonies for the centerpieces. I tasted three cakes and chose the lemon. I moved a cousin two seats to the left on the seating chart so she wouldn't sit beside her ex-husband.

In the evenings, after Jace fell asleep, I opened my battered notebook and built the Dixon file page by page. Shell companies. Falsified filings. The evidence Jace had gathered years ago to hold over Christina's family and had never had the spine to use. I had the spine.

I shipped three boxes to a London storage facility. Books. Coats. The small things I wanted to keep.

I smiled at everyone who needed me to smile.

Nobody noticed I had already left.
