Chapter 2

The snap echoes.

For a second, nothing happens. Three hundred people stare at me. At my raised hand. At the red mark blooming across my cheek.

Then the doors open.

Three sets of them. North entrance. South entrance. The service corridor behind the altar.

Twelve men in black suits step through. Their movements are synchronized. Military-precise. They're carrying something between them. Something enormous.

A funeral wreath.

It's taller than a person. White lilies and black roses arranged in a perfect circle. White ribbon cascading down like a waterfall. They carry it to the altar—the exact spot where I was supposed to stand in seven minutes and promise Caleb the rest of my life.

They set it down with the care usually reserved for caskets.

The room erupts. Gasps. Whispers. Someone's aunt near the back says "Oh my God" loud enough to carry. Jane Hicks shoots to her feet, her face the color of raw meat. Kehlani's eyes go wide. She's still on the ground, forgotten now, her hand pressed to her chest like she's the one who got hit.

Caleb stares at the wreath. His mouth opens. Closes. Opens again.

I watch him.

One of the security operatives produces a small white card from his jacket. He hands it to Caleb with the neutral expression of a man delivering mail.

Caleb reads it. His face drains.

I know what it says. I wrote it myself three days ago, sitting in Renata's office with a glass of wine I didn't drink.

*In loving memory of Caleb Hicks' dignity and Kehlani Moore's shame. Rest in pieces.*

Caleb looks up. Finds me across the wreath. His voice comes out strangled. "What the hell is this?"

I don't answer.

Movement to my left. Lily stands. She's wearing ice-blue Dior—the suit she saves for hostile takeovers and board coups. She pulls her phone from her clutch with the slow deliberation of someone loading a gun.

She taps the screen once. Raises it to her ear.

The room goes quiet enough to hear the ocean below.

"Victor," Lily says. Her voice is flat. Boardroom-neutral. "Caleb Hicks. Immediate termination. Blacklist advisory. Wall Street-wide. Effective now."

She ends the call.

Eleven seconds. That's all it took.

Caleb's phone buzzes in his jacket. He doesn't reach for it. He's still staring at Lily like she just spoke a language he doesn't understand.

I almost feel sorry for him. Almost.

Then I remember the sound his palm made against my face.

Aleena moves next. She rises from the bridesmaids' row holding a leather binder. Slim. Expensive. The kind lawyers carry into depositions. She crosses to me in four measured steps and places it in my hands.

I open it.

The first page is a property deed. The SoHo penthouse. My name in the owner field. Caleb's name nowhere.

I look up. Three hundred faces look back.

"The penthouse on Greene Street," I say. My voice carries. Clear. Steady. No tremor. "Title holder: Raina Porter. Purchase date: November 2021. Funded entirely by me."

I turn the page.

"The Tesla Model S Plaid currently parked in the venue lot. Registered owner: Raina Porter. Purchased June 2022. Eighty-three thousand dollars. My account."

Another page.

"The Rolex collection displayed in the penthouse master bedroom. Six pieces. Total value: one hundred forty-seven thousand dollars. All purchased with funds transferred from my personal account to Caleb's, which he assured me was for 'our future.'"

Caleb takes a step toward me. "Raina—"

"I'm not finished."

He stops.

I flip to the section Renata marked with a red tab. Bank statements. Three years of them. Highlighted in yellow.

"Monthly transfers to Kehlani Moore's personal account," I continue. "Ranging from eight thousand to fifteen thousand dollars. Total over thirty-six months: three hundred forty thousand dollars. Memo line on each transfer: 'household expenses.'"

I close the binder. Look directly at Kehlani. She's standing now. The fainting spell forgotten. Her face is white.

"Your Chanel bags," I say quietly. "Your Louboutin heels. Your girls' trips to Tulum. I paid for all of it. Through him."

She opens her mouth. Nothing comes out.

I turn back to Caleb.

"Total amount owed by Caleb Hicks to Raina Porter: two point seven million dollars. Due immediately."

Jane Hicks finds her voice. It comes out shrill. "This is insane. You can't just—"

"I can," I say. "And I did."

Caleb's phone buzzes again. And again. He finally pulls it out. His thumb scrolls. His face goes from pale to gray.

I know what he's seeing. The termination email. The frozen corporate card. The access badge deactivation notice. The text from his department head: *Don't come in Monday. Don't call. You're done.*

He looks at me like I'm someone he's never met.

Maybe he's right.

"You owed me," he whispers. "I saved your life."

I touch my cheek. The heat is fading. The clarity isn't.

"No," I say. "You didn't."

I don't explain. Not yet. That comes later.

For now, I just stand there. In my Vera Wang gown. Beside a funeral wreath. Holding a binder full of receipts.

And I don't feel small anymore.
