When My Fiancé Turned Me Into His Ex’s Copy Chapter 1

The pain hit my stomach right after the appetizers arrived.

It was sharp and twisting, like a hot wire pulling tight beneath my ribs. Beneath the white tablecloth of the Manhattan restaurant, my knuckles turned white against my napkin. I kept my back straight. I kept the small, polite smile on my face.

For six years, that was my job: be quiet, be pleasant, and fit into Jonah Evans’s perfect world.

Jonah sat right beside me in his tailored suit. When I let out a shallow gasp, he glanced over. He gave my back two quick, distracted pats, the way someone pats a dog under the table.

"You okay?" he muttered. He didn't even wait for an answer. His eyes dropped back down to his phone.

Across from us, Jonah’s mother, Mrs. Evans, was talking about country clubs with my mother. Both families had gathered for Christmas Eve dinner. We did this every year. But this year, Jonah’s thumbs never stopped flying over his screen.

Then his phone buzzed. A bright notification popped up on the glass.

*Mira.*

*The baby has a 104 fever,* the preview read. *I’m alone, Jonah. I’m scared.*

Jonah stood up so fast his chair screeched against the hardwood.

"I have to go," he said.

He grabbed his wool overcoat from the back of the chair. He didn’t offer an excuse. He didn’t look at his mother, whose mouth hung open mid-sentence. He didn’t look at my mother. And he certainly didn’t look at me, even though I was bent halfway over the table, clutching my stomach.

"Jonah?" Mrs. Evans called out, sharp and demanding. "Jonah, sit down!"

He was already gone. The brass restaurant doors swung shut behind him.

A heavy silence dropped over the table.

My mother reached across the white linen. Her fingers touched my cold wrist. "Paige, honey..."

"Excuse me," I whispered.

I barely made it to the restroom. I fell to my knees against the cold marble floor of a stall and threw up until my ribs ached. I stayed there for a long time, listening to the muffled Christmas carols through the vent, shivering all by myself.

***

The next morning, my phone rang at eight.

"Paige," Jonah said. His voice was brisk, like he was ordering a coffee. "Mira had to stay the night in pediatrics. Her kid is stable, but she doesn't have a change of clothes. Go to her apartment, grab a bag, and bring it to the fourth floor at Presbyterian. I’m stuck on a client call."

He hung up before I could say a word.

My stomach still burned from the night before, but my old habits died hard. I picked up a bag from Mira’s doorman and drove to the hospital.

Room 412 was quiet. The curtains were half-drawn against the gray December sky.

I expected to see an exhausted, weeping mother. Instead, Mira Hoffman was propped up against a mountain of white pillows. Her dark hair fell over her shoulders in loose waves. She wore a soft silk robe, and her lips had a fresh coat of pink gloss.

When I set the bag by the foot of her bed, she gave me a soft, pitying smile.

"Oh, Paige," she said. Her voice was delicate, like porcelain. "You didn't have to do that. Jonah always said you were so dependable."

I pressed my lips together. "How is your daughter?"

"She’s sleeping," Mira sighed softly, smoothing the white hospital sheet with one manicured hand. "I keep telling Jonah he doesn't need to worry so much about me. He practically stayed up all night holding my hand. But... you know how he is with people he really cares about."

The room felt suddenly devoid of air. It was a clean, quiet cut.

Before I could answer, the door swung open. Jonah walked in with two cups of takeout coffee. He hadn't brought one for me.

"You brought the bag?" he asked me, not breaking stride as he set a cup on Mira’s bedside table.

"Jonah," I said quietly, stepping toward him near the door. "Can I talk to you in the hall for a second?"

He frowned, checking his watch. "What is it, Paige? Make it quick."

I kept my voice low so Mira wouldn't hear. "She’s playing games. She just made a comment about how you stayed all night, about who you *really* care about—"

"Jesus Christ," Jonah cut me off, his voice turning cold and sharp. "Her kid was in the ER, Paige. She’s going through hell right now. Can you stop being so damn oversensitive for once in your life?"

I stared at him.

The harsh fluorescent lights reflected off his eyes. There was no warmth there. No kindness. There never had been. Just irritation that I was making things inconvenient.

Something clicked shut inside my chest. It felt like a lock turning.

I didn't argue. I didn't cry.

I simply turned around, stepped into the hallway, and pulled the heavy wooden door behind me. Then, with all the strength in my arm, I slammed it shut.

The bang echoed down the entire corridor like a gunshot.

It was the first loud sound I had made in six years.

My heart pounded in my ears as I walked toward the elevators. Before I could press the button, the elevator doors slid open.

Mrs. Evans stepped out, wrapped in a dark mink coat, her face tight with suspicion. She didn't even notice me standing by the wall. She marched straight down the hall with hard, rapid clicks of her heels and threw open the door to Room 412.

I stopped and looked back.

Through the wide doorway, Jonah stood beside the bed. His arms were wrapped tightly around Mira. Her head rested against his chest. They looked like a couple in a photograph.

Mrs. Evans froze. Then her voice exploded down the hallway, loud and furious.

"Jonah Evans! What on earth are you doing?!"

Nurses poked their heads out from the station. Visitors turned to stare.

"Mom, stop—" Jonah pulled away from Mira, his face turning bright crimson.

Mrs. Evans stepped right into the room, pointing a trembling finger. "You humiliate Paige on Christmas Eve, and now you’re here clutching this woman like a cheap scandal? Have you lost your mind? What about our family name?!"

Jonah backed out into the hallway, trying to hush his mother, his chest heaving with embarrassment.

Then he looked up.

He saw me standing fifty feet away by the elevator doors.

His eyes widened in shock, then narrowed into pure, burning venom. His jaw clenched tight. In that instant, I knew exactly what he was thinking.

He thought I had called his mother. He thought I had set him up.

I didn't move. I didn't look away. For the first time, I just looked right back through him.
