Chapter 2

The knock came at nine in the morning.

I had not slept. The rejection pain had settled into a dull, constant ache beneath my ribs, the kind that makes breathing feel like work. My wolf was still howling somewhere deep inside me—not grief, not anymore, but a cold, focused rage that had nowhere to go yet. I had spent the night on my couch with my laptop open, transferring funds, canceling contracts, and watching three years of invisible work dissolve with each keystroke. By dawn, Ironvale's operational budget had a life expectancy of seventy-two hours.

The knock came again. Sharper this time.

I stood. Smoothed my shirt. Walked to the door.

Milani Johnston stood in my hallway wearing the coat I had given Duke last winter. Charcoal cashmere, tailored at the waist, with silver buttons I had chosen myself. She had paired it with boots I did not recognize and a smile that was all warmth and no soul.

"Vera," she said softly. "I hope I'm not intruding."

I did not step aside. I did not invite her in. I stood in the doorway and waited.

Her smile flickered. Just for a second. Then it was back, bright and concerned. "I wanted to check on you. Last night was... difficult. For everyone."

"Was it," I said.

She touched the edge of the coat—my coat—and tilted her head. "Duke feels terrible, you know. He didn't want to hurt you. But he deserves someone who makes him feel like an Alpha. Not a charity project."

The words landed exactly where she intended them to. She was good. I would give her that. She had chosen the phrase carefully, the one designed to make me feel small and grasping and wrong for having given too much. She wanted me to flinch.

I did not flinch.

I looked at her for a long moment. Then I spoke.

"The coat you're wearing," I said quietly, "was purchased on November fourteenth of last year using an account I opened in Duke's name. The receipt is in my records. I want it back."

Her smile froze.

"The furniture in the pack house," I continued, my voice perfectly even, "was selected and paid for by me. The warrior training facility lease is under my signature. The alliance with the Crescent Ridge Pack was brokered through a contact I maintained for two years before Duke ever met their Alpha. The vehicles in the pack garage, the medical supplies in the healer's wing, the security system that monitors the property line—all of it traces back to accounts I control."

I paused. Milani's hand had dropped from the coat. Her face was very still.

"I am reclaiming every single asset," I said. "Every gift. Every resource. Every connection. You have seventy-two hours to return anything that came from me, or I will add theft to the list of charges I am currently compiling."

"Charges?" Her voice was no longer soft. It was sharp now, the warmth stripped away like paint peeling off a wall.

"Criminal conspiracy," I said. "Fraud. Breach of fiduciary duty. I have documentation for all of it. Dates, amounts, communications. I kept records, Milani. I always keep records."

She stared at me. For the first time since she arrived, I saw something real in her face—not fear, not yet, but the beginning of calculation. She was trying to figure out how much I actually knew.

"You're bluffing," she said.

I smiled. It was not a kind smile. "Try me."

Footsteps echoed in the hallway behind her. Heavy, fast, furious. Duke rounded the corner, his face flushed, his wolf riding so close to the surface I could see it in his eyes.

"What the hell did you do?" he snarled.

Milani stepped aside. Duke filled the doorway, his shoulders blocking the light from the hall. He was breathing hard. His hands were clenched at his sides.

"What did I do?" I repeated. My voice was very calm.

"Marcus called me an hour ago," Duke said. "The accounts are frozen. The training facility sent an eviction notice. Half the pack's suppliers are demanding immediate payment or they're pulling contracts. What the hell did you do?"

"I took back what was mine," I said.

He stepped forward. I did not move. We were inches apart now, close enough that I could smell the cologne I had bought him, the shampoo I had stocked in his bathroom, the life I had built around him piece by piece.

"You can't do this," he said. His voice was low, dangerous. "You don't get to destroy everything because you're hurt."

"I'm not destroying anything," I said. "I'm simply removing my support. If Ironvale collapses without me, that's not destruction. That's revelation."

His hand shot out. He grabbed my arm, his fingers digging in hard enough to bruise. "You think you're clever? You think you can just walk away and leave me with nothing?"

"Let go," I said.

He did not let go. He shoved me backward, hard. I stumbled, my shoulder slamming into the shelf behind me. The impact sent a jolt of pain down my spine. Something fell. I heard it hit the floor, the sound of metal and glass scattering across hardwood.

I looked down.

My mother's locket lay in pieces at my feet. The chain was broken. The enchanted casing had cracked open, and the single strand of Lycan fur inside—pale silver, preserved for fifteen years—was exposed to the air, already beginning to disintegrate.

For a moment, I could not breathe.

My wolf, silent for so long, erupted. The howl tore through me, raw and primal, a grief so deep it fractured something inside my chest. My vision blurred. My hands shook. I dropped to my knees, reaching for the pieces, but the fur was already gone. Ash on my fingers.

When I looked up, Duke was staring at me. Milani had gone pale.

"Get out," I whispered.

My voice was not calm anymore. It was something else. Something that made Duke take a step back.

"Vera—"

"Get out," I said again, louder now. My wolf was clawing at my skin, demanding to be let out, demanding blood. "And sign the severance papers. Formal, irrevocable, legally binding. I want this bond dead."

Duke's jaw tightened. He glanced at Milani, then back at me. "Fine," he said. "If that's what you want."

"It is," I said.

He turned and walked away. Milani followed, still wearing my coat.

I stayed on the floor, staring at the broken locket, until the pain in my chest became something I could carry.

Then I stood. And I made another call.
