Chapter 3

The Blackridge Pack territory sat on the north ridge, where the forest was older and the wolves were quieter. I had done my research. Alpha Theo Sullivan had built his pack through consensus, not conquest. His warriors were loyal because he earned it, not because he demanded it. Duke hated him. That alone would have been reason enough.

I parked outside the pack house just after noon. The building was smaller than Ironvale's—no marble columns, no unnecessary grandeur—but it was solid. Well-maintained. The kind of place that did not need to prove anything.

A Beta met me at the door. He was older, steady, the kind of wolf who had seen enough to know when not to ask questions. He led me through a hallway lined with photographs—pack runs, territory expansions, a few candid shots of wolves in human form laughing over something I could not see. There were no portraits of the Alpha alone. That told me something.

Theo's office was at the end of the hall. The Beta knocked once, opened the door, and stepped aside.

Theo Sullivan stood behind his desk, reviewing a contract. He looked up when I entered. His eyes were dark, his posture relaxed in a way that suggested he did not need to perform authority. He was taller than Duke. Broader through the shoulders. His presence filled the room without effort.

"Vera Williamson," he said. Not a question. He had done his research too.

"Alpha Sullivan," I replied.

He gestured to the chair across from his desk. I sat. He did not sit immediately. He studied me for a moment—not in the way men sometimes do, cataloging and dismissing, but with a focus that felt oddly careful. Then he sat.

"You want an alliance," he said.

"I do."

"With Blackridge. Duke Barnes's longest-standing rival."

"Yes."

He leaned back in his chair. His expression did not change. "That's going to make him very angry."

"I know," I said.

A pause. Then, quietly: "Good."

I pulled the contract from my bag and slid it across the desk. He picked it up, scanned the terms. I had spent two days drafting it. Every clause was airtight. Every benefit was mutual. There was nothing in it that required Blackridge to take on risk they had not already calculated.

He read in silence. I watched his face. He did not react to the financial terms—those were generous but fair. He paused at the territorial clauses. Frowned slightly at the dispute-resolution section. Then he set the contract down and looked at me.

"This is a good deal," he said. "Better than good. Why are you offering it to me?"

"Because you are Duke's rival," I said. "And because you built your pack the right way."

His mouth twitched. Almost a smile. "The right way."

"Through trust," I said. "Not dominance."

He was quiet for a moment. Then he picked up a pen, signed the bottom of the contract, and stood. He extended his hand across the desk.

I stood. I reached out.

Our palms met.

The scent hit me like a physical force. Cedar and honey. Warm, grounding, with an undertone of something wilder I could not name. It wrapped around me, sank into my lungs, and my wolf—who had been howling in rage for days—went completely, utterly silent.

*Mate.*

The word echoed through my mind, undeniable and absolute. The Moon Goddess did not make mistakes. This was not a bond I had built with my own hands. This was fate.

I looked up. Theo was staring at me. His hand was still holding mine. His wolf was in his eyes—steady, certain, waiting.

He knew.

I pulled my hand back. Carefully. My heart was pounding so hard I was certain he could hear it.

"The alliance is finalized," I said. My voice was steady. I was proud of that.

"It is," he said.

He did not say anything else. He did not ask the question I knew he wanted to ask. He simply nodded, stepped back, and let me leave.

I walked out of his office, through the hallway, past the photographs of wolves who smiled at each other like family. I made it to my car before my hands started shaking.

I sat in the driver's seat and stared at the steering wheel. My wolf was no longer silent. She was awake, alert, and she wanted to go back inside. She wanted to claim what the Moon Goddess had given us.

I gripped the wheel until my knuckles went white.

Not yet. Not now. Not when I was still bleeding from the last bond I had trusted.

I started the engine and drove away.

Behind me, through the rearview mirror, I saw Theo standing in the doorway of the pack house. He was watching me leave. He did not move until my car disappeared around the bend.

I did not let myself think about what that meant.

By the time I reached the highway, my phone was ringing. I glanced at the screen. Marcus Hale. Duke's Beta. I answered.

"Vera," Marcus said. His voice was tight. "What the hell did you just do?"

"I signed an alliance," I said.

"With Blackridge. With Theo Sullivan."

"Yes."

A pause. Then, quieter: "Duke is going to lose his mind."

"I know," I said.

I hung up.

I drove home in silence. The rejection pain was still there, a dull ache beneath my ribs. But for the first time since the Alpha Summit, I felt something else.

Hope.
