Chapter 1

The Alpha Summit stage was built to hold power. Polished wood, spotlights that could burn through a lie, and a microphone that carried every word to the three hundred wolves packed into the ceremonial hall. I had stood on stages like this before—back when I still used my real name, back when I was still my father's daughter. Tonight I was just Vera. Duke's mate. The woman who had spent three years building a pack that was never supposed to be mine.

Duke stepped to the center of the stage. He looked good. The tailored suit I had paid for fit him perfectly. His posture was confident, his wolf riding just beneath his skin in that way Alphas do when they want everyone to remember what they are. Milani stood beside him in a gown I recognized—cream silk, delicate beading along the neckline. I had seen the receipt. My money had paid for it.

I stood at the edge of the stage, where mates were supposed to stand during ceremonial announcements. Close enough to be seen. Far enough to be forgotten.

Duke cleared his throat. The hall went quiet. Every Alpha on the East Coast was watching. This was supposed to be our moment—the formal presentation of Ironvale's Luna to the pack network. Three years of work, finally made official.

"I, Duke Barnes, Alpha of the Ironvale Pack," he began, his voice carrying that Alpha tone he had spent months perfecting, "reject you, Vera, as my mate and Luna."

The rejection pain hit like a freight train.

It started in my chest—a sharp, tearing sensation, as though someone had reached into my ribcage and ripped out something vital. The bond I had nurtured for three years, the connection I had poured every ounce of my wolf's strength into, snapped. The pain radiated outward, bone-deep and soul-level, the kind of agony that makes your vision white out at the edges. My knees tried to buckle. I locked them.

I did not fall.

Duke kept talking. "I declare Milani Johnston, Beta female of Ironvale, as my chosen Luna."

The crowd murmured. Some wolves gasped. A few looked at me with something that might have been pity. Milani smiled—soft, sweet, the picture of a humble she-wolf accepting an unexpected honor. She touched Duke's arm. He covered her hand with his.

I stood very still. I counted my breaths. In, two, three. Out, two, three. The pain was still there, a living thing clawing at my insides, but I had survived worse. I had watched my mother die. I had buried a crown. I could survive this.

The hall was waiting. They expected me to cry, maybe. To beg. To collapse on the stage and give them a story they could retell at pack dinners for years.

I walked to the microphone.

Duke stepped back, surprised. Milani's smile flickered. I did not look at either of them. I looked at the crowd—at the Alphas in the front rows, the Betas and Gammas scattered throughout, the wolves who had spent three years watching Ironvale rise and wondering how a borderline-Omega had pulled it off.

"I accept," I said.

My voice was quiet. It carried anyway. The acoustics in the hall were perfect.

"I accept Duke's rejection. The bond is severed." I paused. The pain was still radiating through my chest, but my voice did not shake. "And I want everyone here to understand something. Every resource Ironvale depends on—every alliance, every cent, every connection that made this pack viable—dies tonight."

The murmur in the crowd shifted. It was no longer pity. It was something else.

"Duke Barnes did not build Ironvale," I continued. "I did. And now I'm taking it back."

I turned and walked off the stage. I did not look at Duke. I did not look at Milani. I kept my spine straight, my steps even, and I did not stop until I was through the double doors and into the hallway beyond.

The moment the doors closed behind me, I leaned against the wall. My hand went to my sternum, pressing hard against the place where the bond used to sit. The pain was still there, a dull roar beneath my ribs. My wolf was howling inside me—not in grief, but in fury. She wanted blood. She wanted to go back into that hall and tear Duke's throat out in front of everyone.

I closed my eyes. Counted to ten.

By the time I opened them, the decision was already made.

I pulled out my phone. My hands were steady. I scrolled through my contacts and found the first name on the list: Marcus Hale, Duke's Beta. The man who had no idea that every paycheck he had signed for the past three years had come from an account I controlled.

I pressed call.

He picked up on the second ring. "Vera? What—"

"Marcus," I said, my voice perfectly calm. "As of tonight, the Ironvale Pack's primary funding account is frozen. You have seventy-two hours to find alternative financing, or your warriors don't get paid. I suggest you start looking."

I hung up before he could respond.

Next call. Then the next. One by one, I dismantled everything I had built. The training facility lease—canceled. The alliance with the southern border packs—revoked. The supply contracts for the pack house—terminated. Every single piece of infrastructure Duke thought was his dissolved with a phone call and a wire transfer.

By the time I finished, my phone battery was at fifteen percent and my chest hurt less. Not because the pain was gone. Because I had somewhere to put it now.

I straightened. Smoothed my dress. And walked toward the exit.

Behind me, through the closed doors, I could still hear the crowd. The whispers were louder now. Someone laughed—short and shocked. I did not need to be in the room to know what they were saying.

Duke Barnes had just made the worst mistake of his life.

And everyone knew it.
