Chapter 3

Vanessa's message came through at seven in the morning.

A screenshot. Harley in Cruz's kitchen—my old kitchen—wearing one of those silk robes that cost more than most people's rent, holding a coffee mug like she'd always lived there. The caption: *Morning light hits different when you're exactly where you're supposed to be.* Twenty-three comments. All hearts and fire emojis.

Then Vanessa's message beneath it: *Say the word and I'll destroy her Instagram alone.*

I stared at the photo for a moment. The morning light coming through the window I used to stand at. The coffee maker I'd picked out. Harley's bare feet on the kitchen tile.

I typed back: *Not yet. Let them build the stage. It makes the fall more spectacular.*

Three seconds of silence. Then a string of fire emojis, one after another, until they filled my screen. Then nothing. Vanessa went quiet the way a good soldier goes quiet—watchful, ready, waiting for the signal.

I put my phone in my pocket and looked around my new apartment.

It was small. One bedroom, clean lines, a window that faced a brick wall. I'd chosen it deliberately—the kind of place a woman with nothing left would rent. No doorman. No view. The furniture that came with it was the kind that had no memory. I'd added a coffee maker and a lamp and not much else. It looked exactly like what I needed it to look like.

I had somewhere to be.

---

Ace was already there when I arrived.

A private room in a members-only club in Midtown—the kind of place where the walls were dark wood and the staff had signed NDAs and nobody looked twice at a quiet meeting between two people with a great deal to discuss. He stood when I came in, and for a moment neither of us said anything.

He looked the same as he always did. Steady. Like a man who had already decided everything and was simply waiting for the world to catch up.

"Sit down," I said. "Show me where we are."

He spread the documents across the table without ceremony. Shareholder proxies. Patent filings. Financial exposure maps. Ownership structures laid out in clean columns, annotated in Ace's own handwriting in the margins. I'd known he was good at this. I hadn't known how good.

"Forty-one percent of the voting shares are already under our control," he said. He tapped a page. "Quietly. Through four separate holding entities. Cruz has no idea any of it moved."

I studied the ownership map. The Bradley family's fingerprints were everywhere, if you knew how to read it. Cruz had never known how to read it.

"The patents?"

"Secured. The three core technology licenses his expansion strategy depends on—all filed under a Bradley subsidiary two years ago." Ace paused. "He's been paying licensing fees to your family without knowing it."

I almost smiled. "How long until we can move?"

"When you say the word." He looked at me directly. "Everything is positioned. We're just waiting."

I nodded and turned back to the documents. We worked for two hours. No small talk. No sentiment. Just the clean, precise work of dismantling something that had been built on borrowed ground.

At one point Ace refilled my coffee without being asked and set it beside my hand without interrupting what I was saying. I noticed. I didn't comment on it. But I noticed.

---

That evening, I got a call from a number I didn't recognize.

It turned out to be Derek Shaw. Cruz's CFO. His voice was careful. Calibrated. The voice of a man who had done the math and didn't like the answer.

"Ms. Bradley," he said. "I think we should talk."

"I'm listening."

A pause. The sound of a door closing on his end. "I've been with Mitchell Enterprises for six years. I've watched how the capital moved. Where it came from. I know what Cruz doesn't know." Another pause. "I'd like to make sure I'm standing on the right side when this is over."

I let the silence sit for a moment.

"Send the documents to the email I'm about to text you," I said. "Everything on the structural vulnerabilities. The off-book liabilities. All of it. Do it tonight."

"And in return—"

"In return, I won't include your name in the filing."

He exhaled. "Tonight," he confirmed.

I hung up and sat in the quiet of my small apartment. Outside, the city moved the way it always did—indifferent, relentless, full of people making calculations.

Somewhere across town, Cruz was probably at dinner with Harley. Laughing. Pouring wine. Believing the floor was solid beneath him.

Somewhere in a study I hadn't visited in months, my father was making a single, unhurried phone call. He wouldn't tell me about it. He never did. He just quietly removed the obstacles and let me walk the path.

I opened my laptop.

The stage was almost ready.

I had a little more work to do.
