Chapter 2

The courthouse smelled like old paper and floor wax. I got there early, before the morning rush, before the city had fully woken up. I wore a gray blazer and my hair pulled back. No jewelry. I wanted to look like a woman handling paperwork, not a woman ending a marriage.

The clerk barely glanced up when I slid the forms across the counter.

Cruz arrived twenty minutes late. He walked in like he owned the building—jacket pressed, coffee in hand, that easy confidence he wore like a second skin. When he saw me already seated at the small table in the filing room, something flickered across his face. Surprise, maybe. He'd expected me to be standing outside, wringing my hands.

He sat down across from me and looked at the documents.

Then he looked at me.

"This is permanent," he said.

"That's right."

He picked up the papers and flipped through them slowly, like he was waiting for me to say something. Take it back. Explain that I'd made a mistake. His mouth curved into the beginning of a smirk. "You sure about this, Tiana? Because once I sign—"

"I'm sure."

He studied me for another moment. Then he uncapped his pen and signed. Quick, clean strokes. Like it meant nothing. Like I meant nothing.

"Enjoy your pride," he said, capping the pen and sliding the papers back. "While you can still afford it."

I picked up the documents and stood. "Goodbye, Cruz."

He was already on his phone before I reached the door.

I walked out into the October morning. The air was sharp and cold. I stood on the courthouse steps for exactly ten seconds, breathing it in. Then I walked to my car, set the documents on the passenger seat, and drove.

I didn't cry. I'd done my crying months ago, in the dark, alone, for a man who was already gone. There was nothing left to mourn.

I had work to do.

---

Forty-eight hours later, my phone buzzed with a message from Ace.

*It's started.*

Two words. I read them at my desk, in the apartment I'd rented the same morning I'd left the penthouse. Small. Clean. Nothing in it yet that was mine except a coffee maker and a change of clothes. I was fine with that. I'd learned to travel light.

I set the phone down and thought about Cruz's face when he opened his emails that morning.

I didn't have to imagine it for long. Vanessa called me at noon, barely containing herself.

"Tiana." Her voice was pitched somewhere between delight and reverence. "His CFO just sent out an emergency all-hands. Every major investor pulled out overnight. Credit lines frozen. Three deals collapsed at the same time." A pause. "Three. Simultaneously."

"I heard," I said.

"He's blaming market fluctuation." She said it the way you'd say *he thinks the earth is flat.* "Market fluctuation. As if Harrington Capital and two sovereign wealth funds all simultaneously decided to reallocate because of market fluctuation."

"Let him think that."

"You're terrifying," Vanessa said, with what sounded like genuine admiration. "I mean that as a compliment."

After I hung up, I sat for a while in the quiet of my new apartment. I thought about Cruz sitting in his glass office at Mitchell Enterprises, watching his phone light up with calls he didn't understand. His CFO delivering numbers that didn't make sense. The floor dropping out from under a building he thought he'd built himself, never knowing it had been standing on someone else's foundation the whole time.

I didn't feel satisfaction. Not yet. What I felt was something quieter. A door closing.

---

Harley wasted no time.

By the second evening after I'd cleared out my things, she was already posting. I didn't follow her, but Vanessa sent me the screenshots with the efficiency of a woman who understood that intelligence had value.

Cruz's arm around her waist. Champagne glasses catching the light. The penthouse I'd lived in for three years, rearranged, redecorated, every trace of me already gone. She'd moved fast. She must have had the furniture picked out for months.

The caption read: *Finally where I belong.* Followed by a small heart emoji.

I looked at the photo for a long moment. The kitchen where I'd cooked rosemary chicken two nights ago. The window where I used to watch the city. The life she'd been mentally moving into while I was still living in it.

I set my phone face-down on the desk.

There was a knock at my door. I opened it to find a courier holding a slim envelope. Inside was a single sheet of paper—a preliminary summary from Ace's legal team. Asset mapping. Ownership structures. The quiet, meticulous architecture of everything Cruz thought was his.

I read it once. Then I folded it carefully and slid it into the drawer.

*Finally where I belong.*

She had no idea what was coming. Neither did he.

I made myself a cup of coffee, sat down at my desk, and got back to work.
