Chapter 1

The painting dried at 2:47 on a Saturday afternoon, and I knew we were about to cross a line I couldn't see yet.

Zayn held the canvas at arm's length, his paint-splattered fingers careful not to smudge the edges. Sunlight cut through the park trees and turned the wet watercolor into something that glowed. A large dark wolf with silver-tipped ears stood over two smaller figures — one adult, one child. The brushstrokes were clumsy in the way seven-year-old hands are clumsy, but the intention was clear. He'd painted Evander's wolf. Not Blake's. Not some generic creature from a storybook. Evander's.

I felt something shift in my chest, small and warm and dangerous.

"It's beautiful," I said quietly.

Zayn beamed. "Dad's going to love it."

He tucked the canvas under his arm like it was made of glass. Around us, the community art day hummed with families and laughter and the smell of fresh paint mixing with cut grass. Buster — our oversized Golden Retriever who had somehow escaped the pack house and tracked us here — sprawled across two picnic blankets, panting happily. A few pack members waved from across the lawn. For the first time in weeks, the weight of being a Luna no one truly saw lifted from my shoulders.

Then Buster bolted.

One second he was lying in the sun. The next he was charging through a gap in the treeline, tail wagging, chasing something only he could see. Zayn laughed and ran after him. I called out, but my voice got lost in the wind. I grabbed our bag and followed, smiling despite myself.

We crossed the boundary without realizing it.

The shift was immediate. The trees thinned. White lights appeared, strung through branches like stars brought down to earth. Music drifted toward us — live strings, elegant and expensive. Then came the scent: hundreds of gathered wolves, their combined presence rolling over me like a wave. My steps slowed. My wolf, dormant and silent as she'd been for eight years, stirred uneasily somewhere deep inside.

Then I caught it. His scent.

Blake's scent.

Once, it had been intoxicating — warm and cedar-dark, the kind of scent that made my pulse quicken and my thoughts scatter. Now it hit my stomach like a fist. My breath stopped. My hand found Zayn's shoulder and gripped tight.

"Mom?" Zayn looked up at me, confused.

I turned, pulling him with me. "We need to go."

But we'd already been seen.

Veronica's voice cut through the music before I'd taken three steps. "Well. Look what wandered in."

I froze.

She stood at the ceremonial entrance, champagne flute in hand, her dress white and elaborate and unmistakably bridal. The Mate Ceremony. I'd stumbled into Blake and Veronica's Mate Ceremony. Behind her, the gathering spread out like a staged photograph — hundreds of wolves in formal dress, tables draped in silk, an arch woven with night-blooming flowers. Every eye turned toward us.

Veronica's smile didn't waver. It sharpened.

She touched Blake's arm and murmured something I couldn't hear. His head turned. His eyes found mine across the crowd. For one second, neither of us moved. Then his expression shifted into something I recognized — the look he'd worn eight years ago when he'd decided I wasn't worth keeping.

They walked toward us together.

Blake moved with the easy authority of an Alpha on his own territory. Veronica's heels clicked against the stone path. Wolves stepped aside to let them pass. My hand tightened on Zayn's shoulder. I should have run. I should have grabbed my son and Buster and crossed back over the boundary before this became what I knew it was about to become.

But my legs wouldn't move.

Blake stopped three feet away. His scent wrapped around me, familiar and wrong. "Iris," he said, his voice carrying just enough for the nearest guests to hear. "I didn't realize Ironclaw was sending representatives."

Veronica laughed softly. "Representatives. That's generous, Blake." She looked me over, her gaze moving from my paint-stained jeans to the canvas tucked under Zayn's arm. "She's not a representative. She's a wolfless Omega who married up and still doesn't know when she's out of place."

My jaw tightened. I met her eyes and said nothing.

"Eight years," Blake said, shaking his head like he was disappointed. "Eight years with Evander Russell, and you still look like this. Still dragging yourself around. Still—" He gestured vaguely at Zayn. "Still pretending."

Zayn pressed closer to my side. I felt his small body tense.

Veronica's attention shifted to the painting. She stepped forward, champagne flute tilting slightly. "What's this? Did the boy make something?"

Zayn clutched the canvas tighter.

"Let me see." Veronica's voice was light, almost kind. She plucked the painting from Zayn's hands before he could pull away. She held it up, examining it with theatrical pity. "Oh. Oh, sweetheart. This is... well, it's very sweet. Very—" She paused, her smile widening. "Childish."

Then, slowly, deliberately, she tipped her champagne flute.

The liquid poured over the canvas in a golden stream. The watercolor bled instantly, the dark wolf's form dissolving into streaks of gray and brown. Zayn made a small, choked sound. I lunged forward, but Veronica was already dropping the ruined painting to the ground. She crushed Zayn's battered paint tin under her heel, the metal buckling with a sharp crack.

"There," she said brightly. She reached into her clutch, pulled out a handful of hundred-dollar bills, and flung them at my feet. The bills scattered across the stone like leaves. "Buy the boy a real mother."

Zayn's face crumpled. He clutched the ruined canvas to his chest and began to cry — not loud, wailing sobs, but the quiet, gasping kind that meant he was trying not to. My vision narrowed. My pulse roared in my ears. Somewhere deep inside, my wolf — silent for eight years — stirred again, and this time it wasn't unease.

It was rage.
