Chapter 2

I pulled Zayn behind me. My hand found his shoulder and held tight. The ruined painting lay crumpled at our feet, champagne still dripping from the edges. Around us, hundreds of wolves watched in silence. The music had stopped. Even the wind seemed to hold its breath.

"We're leaving," I said. My voice came out level. Calm. Like I hadn't just watched this woman destroy my son's work and throw money at my face like I was something she could buy.

Blake stepped forward. His scent rolled over me, cedar-dark and wrong. "You don't leave until I say you can leave."

I met his eyes. "This is a mistake. We crossed the boundary by accident. We'll go back to Ironclaw territory and—"

"You'll stay," Blake cut in. His jaw tightened. "You'll stay and you'll remember what you are."

Behind me, Zayn's breathing hitched. His small fingers dug into my jacket. I could feel him trembling.

Veronica tilted her head, her smile sweet and poisonous. "Blake, let her go. She's not worth the trouble. Look at her — she can't even stand up straight. Eight years with Evander Russell and she's still just a wolfless Omega playing dress-up."

Something flickered in Blake's expression. Not pity. Not regret. Something colder. He looked at me the way he'd looked at me eight years ago — the night he'd decided I wasn't enough. The night he'd rejected me in front of everyone who mattered.

He needed this. I understood that now. He needed me to be what he'd told himself I was. He needed the story to be true.

"Kneel," Blake said.

The word landed like a stone in water. Ripples spread outward. Wolves shifted on their feet. Someone inhaled sharply.

I didn't move.

Blake's eyes narrowed. His voice dropped, and when he spoke again, it wasn't a request. It was a command wrapped in Alpha authority, the kind of tone that bypassed thought and went straight to the body's oldest instincts.

"Kneel. Bare your neck."

The compulsion hit me like a fist to the chest. My knees buckled. I tried to lock my legs, tried to stay upright, but my body wasn't listening anymore. It was obeying something older than choice. My knees hit the cold stone with a sound that seemed too loud in the silence. Pain shot through my legs. My head bowed forward without permission. The base of my neck — the place where a wolf bares submission — tilted upward.

No. No. This wasn't — I couldn't —

Zayn's voice cracked beside me. "Mom — Mom, stop, get up —"

His small fingers clutched my arm, pulling, trying to lift me. I could hear him crying. Not the loud wailing kind. The quiet, gasping kind that meant he was trying so hard not to fall apart.

I couldn't look at him. I couldn't move. My body was locked in place, pinned by Blake's command and my own biology. Around us, hundreds of wolves watched. No one spoke. No one moved. Veronica's champagne flute caught the light as she raised it to her lips, her smile widening.

Blake surveyed me with the satisfied expression of a man whose narrative had just been vindicated. "There," he said quietly. "That's what you are. That's what you've always been."

Heat bloomed in my chest. Small at first. A flicker. Then it spread — fast, searing, unstoppable. My breath caught. My vision blurred at the edges. Something deep inside me, something that had been silent and still for eight years, began to move.

It wasn't gentle. It wasn't gradual. It was an explosion.

Pain detonated along my spine. My bones cracked and reformed with sounds that shouldn't have been audible but were. Silver fur erupted along my arms, spreading like wildfire. My body surged upward — not standing, not shifting, but erupting. The compulsion shattered like glass under pressure. Blake's Alpha tone dissolved into nothing.

I rose.

The wolf that emerged was enormous. Larger than any wolf I'd ever seen. Silver-furred and radiating an aura that rolled outward in waves, physical and undeniable. Wolves within fifty feet staggered. Some dropped to their knees. Others backed away, their eyes wide, their necks baring instinctively.

Blake stumbled backward. His face went white. Veronica's champagne flute slipped from her fingers and shattered on the stone.

Twenty feet away, near the ceremonial arch, a man went absolutely still. The Lycan King. I'd seen him before in photographs, in formal pack gatherings, always distant and untouchable. Now his nostrils flared. His eyes widened. He stared at me — not at my size, not at my aura, but at something deeper. Something that made his entire body go rigid with recognition.

His lips parted. His voice, when it came, was barely a whisper. But in the silence, it carried.

"Impossible."

My wolf's eyes locked on Blake. He was still backing away, his Alpha authority crumbling with every step. Veronica clutched his arm, her face pale, her earlier confidence gone.

Somewhere behind me, Zayn whispered, "Mom?"

I turned my head. My son stood there, small and paint-splattered and tear-streaked, clutching the ruined canvas to his chest. His eyes were wide. Not with fear. With awe.

And through the bond I'd kept at arm's length for eight years — the bond I'd never fully opened because I'd been too afraid to trust it — I felt something else. A surge of emotion so powerful it nearly knocked me off my feet.

Evander.

He was coming.
