Chapter 1

At 9:14 on a Thursday morning, my fingers brushed Giselle’s collar, and my mate mark froze.

I had reached out to fix the twisted lapel of my stepsister’s coat outside the healer’s wing. But as the fabric shifted, the scent hit me like a physical blow.

Cedar and scorched iron.

It was thick, unmistakable, and soaked directly into the pores of her neck and the roots of her hair. This was not the light trace of two wolves passing in a hallway. This was the musk of a male who had spent hours tangled in sheets, sweating against bare skin.

Blake’s scent.

Against my throat, the private mark Blake had carved into me three years ago flared with an icy, sickening drop. It felt as if a heavy door had slammed shut inside an empty room.

Giselle’s breath hitched. Her eyes went wide, flashing with raw guilt before she jerked backward. "Elaina, wait—it’s not—we were just—"

I didn't let her finish. I didn't scream, and I didn't demand an explanation. I dropped my hand, straightened my spine, and stepped back. My fingers trembled as I pressed them hard against my collarbone, feeling the dead, leaden pulse of the mark. For three years, that mark had felt like safety. Now, it tasted like poison. I turned on my heel and walked down the corridor without looking back once.

That night, alone in my small quarters, the silence broke.

I sat on the edge of my cot, pressing a small tin of dried lavender against my sternum. Suddenly, deep beneath my ribs, a jagged vibration ripped through my chest. It wasn't human grief. It was a low, guttural snarl—the furious stirring of a beast waking from a twenty-year sleep. The pack elders had called me wolfless. A broken Omega. But the creature clawing at my ribs tonight was sharp, feral, and starving.

*Traitor,* the voice inside seemed to hiss.

I pressed the tin into my skin until the metal bruised me, forcing the tremor down. I didn't need to cry. I needed a strategy.

At dawn, I knocked on Blake's office door.

Blake sat behind his heavy oak desk, broad-shouldered and radiating effortless Alpha authority. He looked up, his dark eyes softening with the practiced warmth he always fed me in private.

"Elaina," he said smoothly, leaning back. "Everything alright?"

"Are you sleeping with Giselle?"

The air in the room thinned. Blake didn't shout. He didn't blink. But his right hand moved immediately to the side of his neck, his thumb rubbing over his own skin. It was his tell.

"Don't be ridiculous," he said, his voice dropping into that calm, reasonable register he used to manage unruly subordinates. "Giselle is your sister. She’s been helping with border logistics. Scent bleeds when you spend twelve hours in a tactical room, Elaina. You’re confusing proximity with betrayal." He stood, walking around the desk to reach for my waist. "You know the council is watching us. The Luna announcement is almost ready. Just be patient."

I stepped back before his fingers could graze my hip.

"Right," I said quietly.

I left his office without another word. Back in my room, I pulled a heavy iron lockbox from beneath the floorboards. I took out a clean sheet of paper, uncapped a pen, and recorded the date, the time, the exact scent markers on Giselle, and his evasions. I wasn't an unacknowledged mate waiting for scraps anymore. I was building a record.

That afternoon, I walked toward the pack training grounds.

Standing by the perimeter fence was Reed Cunningham. The Lycan Prince had arrived in Ironveil three weeks ago, but Blake had paraded him around as Giselle’s personal escort.

Reed stood over six feet tall, dark-haired and motionless, watching the sparring warriors with cold disinterest.

I walked straight up to him. "Why are you standing by my sister at every dinner?"

Reed stiffened. When he turned to face me, his gray eyes widened in genuine surprise, followed instantly by a heavy, suffocating wave of guilt. He didn't summon a prince's arrogance. He just looked at me, his jaw tightening.

"Blake asked me to escort her," Reed said, his voice low and gravelly. "He said it was for pack optics. To show alliance stability."

"Optics," I repeated, holding his gaze.

Reed looked down, his knuckles whitening against the timber rail. "Elaina, I..." He stopped, swallowing hard, looking like a man trapped in a deal he violently regretted.

I had my answer. Reed wasn't Blake's co-conspirator. He was a bought prop, paid to make Blake look uninvolved.

Three nights later, the pack gathered in the main hall.

Reed escorted Giselle through the grand doors, playing his assigned role, while Blake held court near the dais. I stood near the pillars, blending into the shadows like I had for three long years.

Then Blake got careless.

A momentary lapse in his mental shielding cracked our private bond-channel wide open. Blake was looking across the hall, linking Reed, completely unaware that the frequency leaked straight into my mind.

*‘Look at her,’* Blake’s voice echoed in my head, cold and dismissive. *‘Elaina’s lost her spark. Three years with the same she-wolf, no shift, no fire. You know how it is, Cunningham.’*

Along with the words came a sudden, filthy surge of heat across my neck—Blake’s raw, physical arousal, directed entirely at Giselle’s bare shoulders across the room.

The shock hit me like a whip, but I didn't falter. I pressed my palm flat over my mouth, turned on my heel, and slipped through the side exits into the dark corridor.

I didn't shed a single tear.

Back in my quarters, I slid the iron lockbox from under my cot. I uncapped my pen, logged the exact timestamp of the mind-link breach, and scribbled two words across the bottom of the ledger: *Enough proof.*

I snapped the iron lid shut, clicked the padlock into place, and slid the heavy key deep into the lining of my boot.

Before I could stand, heavy combat boots halted directly outside my door.

Blake’s voice cut through the wood, sharp and commanding. "Get your coat, Elaina. We're patrolling the northern border right now."
