Chapter 2

The patrol along the northern fence ended at midnight. As soon as Blake dismissed the unit and turned toward the main house, I slipped into the dark perimeter path toward the southern barracks.

Marla’s door was tucked into the corner of the lower guard level. When I knocked three times, the wood pulled open instantly.

Marla stood in her grey patrol fleece, her hand still resting on the hilt of a field knife. When she saw my face, she let out a slow breath and stepped back, letting me inside.

"Elaina," she murmured. "It's late. If Blake finds you down here—"

"I need to call it in, Marla."

Her hand dropped from the knife. Three years ago, I had dragged her bleeding body out of a ditch after a rogue ripped into her flank. I had stitched her in an abandoned shed and never reported it so she wouldn’t lose her post on the guard. We had never spoken of it since.

"What do you need?" she asked quietly.

"Concentrated wolfsbane tincture," I said, keeping my voice flat and even. "A heavy dose. Enough to kill my scent completely so no tracker can follow it."

The color drained from Marla’s face. Her nostrils flared slightly as she read the stillness in my posture. She didn’t ask if I was leaving, and she didn’t ask why. A border patrol wolf knew the difference between someone running away in panic and someone vanishing on purpose.

"That much wolfsbane will tear your stomach apart for twelve hours," she whispered.

"I can take it."

Marla looked at the floor, her jaw working as she weighed her life-debt against treason. Finally, she nodded. "The supply room is counted on Sundays. I can skim enough by Thursday night. Four days."

"Thursday night," I repeated. "Thank you, Marla."

"Elaina," she called softly just as my fingers touched the doorknob. I paused without looking back. "Be careful. The house feels wrong."

She didn't know the half of it.

By Tuesday morning, the entire pack knew.

It didn't start with a bang. It started with a junior healer whispering by the laundry bins about the thick cedar-and-iron scent clinging to Giselle’s skin last week. Then the Beta’s mate connected the dots: Blake’s late nights, the sudden shift in Giselle’s status, and the quiet girl who had spent three years cleaning his study and warming his bed in the dark.

By Wednesday afternoon, the whispers turned into an open wildfire across the courtyard. *The Alpha marked a wolfless girl three years ago. The Alpha is sleeping with her stepsister.*

The shame didn't land on Blake. In Ironveil, an Alpha was never at fault.

At dusk on Wednesday, heavy footsteps stopped outside my quarters. Two pack enforcers kicked the door open without knocking.

"Elaina Watkins," the lead guard barked. "The Council commands your presence."

They didn't give me time to put on shoes. They grabbed my upper arms and dragged me down the long stone corridors toward the ancestral chamber.

The ceremonial room was freezing. Six council elders sat behind a raised semi-circle bench, dressed in heavy wool robes stitched with the Ironveil crest. Sconces of pine-tar flared along the stone walls, casting long, wavering shadows.

In the center of the chamber, resting on a crimson velvet stand, sat a brazier of white-hot coals. Propped inside the fire was a silver branding iron, the metal glowing a faint, lethal cherry red.

And on the high Alpha chair beside the elders sat Blake.

He wore his dark council uniform, his broad shoulders squared, his hair combed back. He looked straight ahead, his jaw locked tight like a vice. He didn't look at me once as the guards shoved me to my knees on the cold flagstones.

The Head Elder stood, unfurling a heavy parchment.

"Elaina Watkins," the old man’s voice echoed off the damp stone. "You stand before the Ironveil Council charged with failing in the sacred duties of an unannounced Luna. By your prolonged physical inadequacy, your lack of a wolf, and your failure to hold your mate’s spirit, you have permitted the erosion of Alpha bond fidelity, bringing public disgrace upon this territory."

A cold, bitter laugh caught in my throat. I lifted my chin, staring right at Blake.

"I didn't choose the secrecy," I said, my voice steady despite the tremor running through my knees. "Blake hid me. Blake marked me in a back room and told me to wait. If he broke his vows with my sister, that is his dishonor, not mine."

"Silence!" the Elder struck a wooden gavel against the stone bench. "By pack statute twenty-four, a female lacking an active wolf bears sole responsibility for maintaining her mate's honor until presentation. Your failure is an insult to the Moon Goddess and a stain upon our bloodline."

The Elder looked at the two enforcers. "Administer the mark of disgrace. Strip her rank. Cast her beyond the pack line."

The guards moved instantly. One grabbed my hair, yanking my head down, while the other ripped the collar of my shirt open, exposing the bare skin of my left shoulder.

Across the room, the bond flared. My pulse spiked, slamming violently against my ribs. Through the mark on my throat, I felt Blake’s heart mirror mine, beating like a trapped bird. He felt my panic. He felt my terror.

He didn't move. He kept his hands flat on the carved armrests of his throne, staring at the blank stone wall above my head.

"Blake," I whispered.

He didn't blink. His right thumb tapped against the wood—once, twice. Cold cowardice.

The enforcer lifted the silver iron from the coals.

The smell of heat reached me first, metallic and suffocating. Then the burning silver pressed down hard against my flesh.

Pain exploded behind my eyes—blinding, absolute white.

I didn't scream. I bit my tongue until blood filled my mouth, clamping my jaw shut so tight my teeth cracked. The silver ate into my meat, hissing and popping as smoke curled up toward the rafters. Deep inside my chest, that dormant, sleeping beast let out a raw, bloodcurdling shriek.

Through the bond, I felt the phantom sear rip into Blake’s neck. His chest heaved. A bead of sweat rolled down his temple. But he remained seated. He didn't lift a finger. He didn't utter a word.

When the metal finally pulled away, taking charred skin with it, my vision swam with black spots.

"Throw her out," the Elder commanded coldly.

The guards hauled me up by my arms, my toes dragging across the floor. They dragged me through the grand hall, down the front steps, and threw me face-down into the frozen gravel of the driveway. My boots and jacket were tossed into the dirt beside me.

The heavy iron gates slammed shut behind me with a sickening clang.

I lay in the mud for a long time, the cold seeping into my jeans while my shoulder burned like an open furnace. Blood trickled down my collarbone.

Slowly, I pushed myself up onto my knees. I looked back at the towering glass windows of the pack house. Blake stood on the second-floor balcony, looking down at me through the rain.

I wiped the blood from my chin with the back of my hand.

I didn't hate him anymore. Hate was something you felt for a person you still believed had a soul.

Blake Montgomery had four days left before I made sure he lost everything.
