The study assignment came during breakfast.

The Beta approached my table—the small one in the corner, where I ate alone now—and set down a folded work order without meeting my eyes. "Alpha's study. Deep clean. He'll be on the northern border run until sunset."

I unfolded the paper. Read it twice. Nodded.

He left.

I finished my bread slowly. Drank my water. Carried my dishes to the kitchen myself. No one spoke to me. The kitchen staff moved around me like I was furniture.

I collected cleaning supplies from the storage closet and walked to the first floor.

The study door was unlocked. I stepped inside and closed it behind me.

The room smelled like cedar and old paper. Greyson's scent was everywhere, layered thick from years of use. I set down my supplies and stood still for a moment, letting my eyes adjust.

The whisper threaded through me, low and insistent.

*Look. Pay attention. He left something.*

I started with the bookshelves. Dusted each spine carefully. Moved methodically along the wall. The whisper stayed quiet, but it was watching through me, cataloging every detail.

When I reached the desk, I paused.

I looked at the door. Still closed. No footsteps in the corridor outside.

I set down my cleaning cloth and moved closer.

The file was leather-bound, expensive. The kind used for official pack business. On the top was a single envelope, partially visible, with a wax seal still intact.

The seal was silver. Pressed into the wax was the Lycan Council emblem.

My breath caught.

I didn't touch it. I leaned in slightly, just enough to read the return address printed in small formal script along the edge.

The name hit me like cold water.

I knew that name. My mother had kept files—records of the Spencer pack's territorial claims, correspondence with Council representatives during boundary disputes. Helena Frost's name had been on at least three documents. She'd been the adjudicator assigned to the northern territories six years ago.

Six years ago. Right before the massacre.

The whisper inside me surged. Not gently. It erupted through my chest and spine with such force that my knees buckled. I caught myself against the edge of the desk, my fingers digging into the wood, my vision blurring at the edges.

*This. This is what he fears.*

I forced myself to breathe. In through my nose. Out through my mouth. Slow. Controlled.

The envelope sat exactly where it had been. I hadn't moved it. Hadn't broken the seal. Hadn't touched anything.

But I had the name now.

I straightened carefully. Picked up my cleaning cloth. Resumed dusting the desk surface around the file, my movements precise and mechanical.

When I finished the study an hour later, everything was exactly as I'd found it. The file still sat on the corner of the desk. The envelope still faced the same direction. The seal was intact.

I carried my supplies back to the storage closet. Returned to my room. Closed the door.

Sat down on the narrow bed and pressed my hands flat against my thighs to stop them from shaking.

The whisper was quieter now. Satisfied.

I would.

The banquet was three days later.

It was formal—a celebration of the eastern alliance's first quarter success. The dining hall had been decorated again. Candles. Flowers. Crystal. The ranked members of three packs filled the long tables, their voices blending into a low competitive hum.

I was assigned to serve.

I entered through the side door carrying a tray of wine glasses. The hall was already full. Greyson sat at the head table with Marley beside him. She was wearing deep blue tonight, her jasmine scent thick and cloying. The moonstone collar caught the candlelight.

I set down the tray and began distributing glasses.

The evening proceeded normally for the first hour. Toasts. Laughter. Political conversation conducted in careful tones. I moved through the room like a ghost, refilling glasses, clearing plates, standing at the perimeter when I wasn't needed.

Marley's voice carried across the hall, bright and warm. She was telling some story about pack traditions, her hand resting lightly on Greyson's arm. He was listening. Smiling slightly.

I was clearing the second course dishes when it happened.

Marley stood. She was mid-sentence, gesturing with her wine glass, when suddenly she gasped. Her free hand flew to her belly. The glass slipped from her fingers and shattered against the stone floor.

The hall went silent.

"She—" Marley's voice was high, breathless. She pointed at me with a shaking hand. "She shoved me—"

He looked at Marley on the floor, her face twisted in pain, her hand clutching her belly.

Then he turned. His eyes locked on mine.

The Alpha tone hit me like a physical blow.

"Kneel."

It wasn't a request. It wasn't even a command in the normal sense. It was absolute. Unqualified. The full weight of his authority compressed into a single word that bypassed my conscious mind entirely and spoke directly to my wolf.

My wolf—dormant, weakened, barely a whisper—had no defense against it.

My body obeyed before I could think.

The tray fell from my hands. Dishes shattered against the stone. My knees buckled and I dropped, hitting the floor hard, the impact jarring through my bones. My head bowed automatically, forced down by the crushing weight of the Alpha tone, my neck bent in submission I couldn't resist.

The hall was utterly silent.

I couldn't lift my head. Couldn't move. The Alpha tone held me pinned like an insect under glass, my body locked in place, my wolf too weak to even whimper in protest.

I heard footsteps. The healer rushing to Marley's side. Concerned voices. Someone helping her to her feet.

I stayed on my knees.

Greyson's voice came from above me, cold and final. "You will remain there until I dismiss you."

I couldn't have moved if I'd wanted to.

Time stretched. My knees ached against the stone. My neck burned from the forced angle. Around me, the banquet slowly resumed—quieter now, the conversations muted and careful.

I counted my breaths. In. Out. In. Out.

Somewhere deep inside, beneath the Alpha tone's crushing weight, beneath my dormant wolf's silence, something else stirred.

Not the whisper.

Something colder.

It didn't rage. It didn't fight the command holding me down.

It simply observed. Recorded. Filed every face in the room—the ones who looked away in shame, the ones who watched with satisfaction, the ones who said nothing and let it happen.

And behind my closed eyes, in the space where my wolf used to be, a single word formed.
