After My Mate Rejected Me Before the Lycan King Chapter 1

The formula scent hit me at 2:47 a.m. on a Thursday.

I was nursing Zoe in the Alpha suite, my body still torn from the labor three weeks ago—the kind of torn where sitting upright felt like dragging broken glass through my insides. The night breeze pushed through the cracked window, carrying something synthetic and wrong. Baby formula. Fresh. Drifting from the eastern trail.

My hands went still on Zoe's back.

Formula had no place in this pack house. I nursed exclusively. Every ounce I expressed went into bags in the pack house freezer, stored under Leona's care while I recovered. Tyler's mother had insisted on managing it herself, patting my hand with that practiced warmth: "You focus on healing, dear. I'll make sure it's all properly organized."

The scent thickened. Closer now. Like someone had just mixed a bottle on Ironveil land.

Zoe's suckling slowed. I looked down at her—three weeks old, dark hair feathering against her skull, Tyler's eyes already visible in her face. My daughter. The child I'd nearly died bringing into this world.

Something inside my chest stirred.

Not a thought. Not a feeling. Deeper than that. My wolf—dormant since I was thirteen, silent through every major event of my adult life—pressed against the inside of my ribs for the first time in years. Not a voice. Just a low, formless unease that made my skin prickle.

I eased Zoe off my breast and laid her in the bassinet. Then I crossed to the window and opened it wider.

The formula scent was unmistakable now. Layered with something else—a faint sweetness I couldn't place. And underneath it, so faint I almost missed it: the mineral-clean smell of expressed breast milk.

My milk.

I stood there for ninety seconds, breathing carefully, cataloging. The scent was coming from the direction of the eastern boundary. Not the pack house kitchen. Not the nursery wing. Somewhere outside Ironveil's main compound.

I closed the window. Locked it. Returned to the bed and sat on the edge, hands folded in my lap.

Tyler was at a border meeting. He'd left after dinner, kissing my forehead with that practiced tenderness he deployed so well in public. "Rest, love. I'll be back before dawn."

I looked at Zoe sleeping in her bassinet. Then I opened the drawer of my nightstand and pulled out the small leather journal I kept—the one Tyler thought was for tracking feeding schedules.

I wrote: *Formula scent, eastern trail, 2:47 a.m. Breast milk undertone. Source unknown.*

Then I closed the journal and went back to bed.

---

The next morning, I walked into the pack house administrative wing with Zoe strapped to my chest in a carrier. Leona was in the main hall, directing two Omegas on flower arrangements for some upcoming event. She saw me and smiled, crossing over with her arms extended.

"Amelia, darling. You should be resting."

"I needed to move," I said, which was true. "Sitting still makes everything hurt worse."

She touched Zoe's head with practiced grandmother affection. "She's sleeping so well. The milk must be agreeing with her."

"It is," I said. "Thank you again for managing the freezer supply. I know it's extra work."

"Nonsense." Leona waved a hand. "It's what family does."

I smiled. Nodded. Then I excused myself and walked to the household office—the small administrative room where supply ledgers and delivery schedules were kept.

The Omega at the desk looked up. "Luna. Do you need something?"

"Just checking this week's deliveries," I said lightly. "I think I missed signing off on the nursery order."

She handed me the ledger without question. I flipped through it, scanning.

Most entries were routine. Kitchen supplies. Patrol equipment. Linens.

Then I saw it.

*Cabin 17, eastern boundary. Formula (6 cases), diapers (newborn), blankets. Deliver by Tuesday.*

Below it, in Leona's handwriting: *Leave it on the porch. The newborn is sleeping.*

I stared at the note for three seconds.

Cabin 17. A structure I had never been told existed. On Ironveil land.

A newborn.

My fingers didn't shake. I pulled out my phone, angled it, and photographed the page. Then I closed the ledger and handed it back to the Omega.

"Thank you," I said.

She smiled. "Of course, Luna."

I walked out of the office. Down the hall. Into the pack house kitchen.

The industrial freezer hummed in the corner. I crossed to it, opened the door, and looked at the shelf where Leona had been storing my expressed milk.

Every bag was gone.

The shelf was empty. Cold metal gleaming under the freezer light.

I stood there, one hand on the freezer door, Zoe's weight warm against my chest.

Then I closed the door. Walked back to the Alpha suite. Locked myself inside.

I sat at my desk. Opened my journal. Wrote: *Cabin 17. Eastern boundary. Newborn. All milk gone.*

I did not cry.

I began to plan.

I was the woman who ironed his shirts and managed his schedule, yet she was the one he comforted at 2 AM. But the real end didn't come with a fight. It came with an explosion. At a family gathering, a gas heater malfunctioned. Glass shattered, and fire erupted. In that split second of life or death, Ethan didn't look for me. He threw his body over Chloe. He shielded her from the flames, cocooning her in his arms, whispering frantically to her while I stood twenty feet away, watching my boyfriend of seven years act like I didn't exist. When I confronted him later, he didn't apologize. Instead, he let Chloe carve her initials over ours on our anniversary tree. When I tried to stop them, he shoved me into the dirt to comfort her over a broken nail. "You are dead to me, Ava," he screamed. "Jealousy makes you ugly." He thought I would beg. He thought I was an appliance he could unplug and plug back in whenever he wanted. He was arrogant enough to believe I would always be there, waiting for his scraps. He was wrong. While he was playing hero to his mistress, I didn't cry. I booked a one-way ticket to Portland, snapped my SIM card in half, and vanished.
