Chapter 3

Dawn came gray through the small square window of the Omega quarters. I had not slept. I folded the oilcloth bundle back into the loose panel behind the cot, smoothed my hair with my fingers, and waited for the knock.

It came at six. A younger she-wolf I had personally recommended for kitchen rotation two years ago stood in the doorway with a mop bucket and a folded list. She did not look at me. She held the list out at arm's length and said, "Corridors. East wing. Then the upper hall."

"Understood," I said.

She flinched. The word came out too even, and she had not braced herself to hear my voice sound the same as it always had.

I took the bucket.

The east wing floors were the ones I had ordered re-sealed six months ago after the winter salt damage. I knew every stone. I got down on my knees at the far end and started scrubbing, and I let my hands do what hands do while my mind went to work.

Two warriors passed me in the first hour. Both looked away too quickly. Guilt, not contempt. I filed them.

A kitchen Omega passed me and did look — a long, uncertain glance, the kind that said she was trying to reconcile the woman on the floor with the woman who had signed her transfer request last spring. She said nothing. I filed her too.

Elias Ford, the Gamma, came around the corner from the barracks stairs at half past seven. He stopped when he saw me. I did not lift my head. I heard him stand there for the length of three breaths — long enough to make a decision — and then his boots moved on down the hall without a word.

He had been about to say something. He had decided not to. That, more than anything else that morning, told me where the pack was.

By ten I had reached the upper hall. The Luna's chambers were at the far end. I set the bucket down, wrung the cloth, and started on the stone outside her door.

I could hear her through the wood.

Skyler's voice, warm and unhurried, telling someone — a maid, probably — where to hang a set of drapes. "No, higher. The window looks smaller if you let them pool." A pause. A laugh, small and pleased. "Yes. Perfect."

She sounded exactly like a woman who had never once wondered whether she deserved the room she was standing in.

I kept scrubbing.

The door opened.

I did not look up. I heard the small, deliberate scuff of her slipper on the stone as she stepped out into the hall and stopped just short of my bucket. The pendant caught the light — I saw the flash of it from the corner of my eye. The clasp still facing outward. She had not learned. No one had told her.

"Aria," she said.

I dipped the cloth. Wrung it. Set it down.

"The Omega quarters finally suit you," she said. Pleasant. Almost kind. Like she was congratulating me on a haircut. "I don't know why it took so long."

I did not answer.

She tilted her head. I felt the shift of air as she leaned down, just slightly, so her voice would land closer.

"Can I ask you something? Genuinely." Her tone was curious, unhurried, the way she led supply meetings. "Did you actually believe him? About the bond?"

I stopped scrubbing.

I lifted my head.

I looked at her — at the smooth composed face, at the pendant lying wrong against her collarbone, at the small satisfied lift at the corner of her mouth that she thought she was hiding.

I said nothing.

I held her eyes for a long, steady beat. Long enough that she began — very slightly — to shift her weight. Long enough that the curiosity in her expression began to thin out around the edges into something less certain.

Then I picked up the cloth and went back to the floor.

I heard her breath catch, just a small hitch, before she recovered. "Well," she said, brighter now, correcting. "Enjoy your morning."

Her slippers moved off down the hall. She did not look back. But she walked a little too briskly, and she did not close the chamber door behind her — a small break in her composure, a woman who had come out expecting a scene and could not quite figure out why she had not gotten one.

I finished the hallway. Then the next one. Then the stairs.

At midnight, Leona came.

I had been sitting on the cot for two hours with my hands folded in my lap. I heard her footsteps in the corridor, that measured deliberate pace, and I did not move. She opened the door without knocking. She looked at me — awake, upright, composed — and I saw the small flicker of irritation cross her face before she smoothed it.

"Bradley has formally notified the rogue clan signatories," she said. No greeting. No preamble. "He sent word this afternoon. The leadership transition is complete on paper. Skyler has been introduced as the new Luna of Ironvale, and the signatories have been asked to redirect all correspondence accordingly."

She paused. Waited for the flinch.

I gave her my face. Empty. Attentive. The face of a woman receiving a weather report.

"You should know," she continued, "that your name has been formally struck from the Accord's diplomatic record. Skyler's has been entered in its place."

"I understand," I said.

She waited a moment longer. Then she turned and left, and her footsteps receded down the corridor at the same measured pace they had arrived.

I sat in the dark.

Inside, very precisely, I set the new information down beside the rest.

Bradley had just sent a letter, under his signature, to Ivo of the Ashfell clan — a man who had never met him, whose name he could not pronounce correctly, whose eldest daughter I had personally carried across the border two winters ago when her leg was broken. He had sent the same letter to Mira of Redthorn, who signed the Accord only after I sat with her for six hours at her fire and swore, in my own blood, that no Ironvale wolf would ever cross her northern line without her word.

He had told them Skyler was their new counterpart.

He had told them, without knowing it, that the woman they had trusted was no longer at the table.

They would not answer him. They would not recognize her. They would wait — perhaps a week, perhaps two — and then they would begin to test the borders, quietly at first, to see who was really standing there.

The Accord was already fraying. Bradley had reached out and pulled the first thread himself.

I looked toward the small square window. The moon was up, thin and cold, and somewhere beyond the tree line a wolf I did not know was reading a letter with my name struck out of it.

Three days until the alliance dinner.

I folded my hands in my lap and waited for morning.
