When My Alpha Humiliated Me, I Awakened Royal Blood Novel Cover

When My Alpha Humiliated Me, I Awakened Royal Blood

For three years, Aria learned to read Bradley's every mood. So when his cuff twitches at 8:47, she knows what he intends: before two hundred wolves and visiting Alphas, he will reject her as mate and Luna. When the words land, the mark on her neck goes cold. Yet beneath the humiliation, something older stirs—royal blood she never knew she carried. With Alpha Marcus Voss of Silverfang watching and a silent Lycan envoy seated at the far end, Aria must decide whether to crumble or rise. The power waking inside her may be the only answer to a rejection meant to destroy her.

Chapter 4

The second morning, Bradley passed me in the corridor.

I was on my knees outside the war room, wiping down the baseboard where the winter salt had left a pale crust along the stone. I heard his boots before I saw him — that particular unhurried stride he used when he wanted the hall to know he was in it. I did not lift my head. I did not need to. I tracked him by sound: the pause at the door, the small tug of his cuff, the shift of weight as he registered me at the edge of his vision.

He walked past.

No greeting. No command. Not even the cruelty of eye contact.

He had, at some point in the last thirty-six hours, made a decision. He would not speak to me again. Every message, every order, every degradation would come through Leona from now on, because Leona could deliver them without needing to look at what she was delivering them to. Bradley could not. Bradley had rehearsed the rejection vow in a mirror, but he had not rehearsed for the aftermath of standing three feet from the woman he had broken and finding out his own throat closed.

Coward, I thought. Not with heat. With the flat, filed certainty of a fact confirmed.

I dipped the cloth. Wrung it. Kept working.

Across the hall, half-hidden in the arch that led to the barracks corridor, Elias Ford was watching.

I knew he was there before I looked. Gammas carry a specific weight when they stand still — the trained readiness of a body that does not know how to be casual on duty. I let my eyes lift, slowly, and meet his.

He did not look away.

That was the piece I filed. A guilty man looks away. A calculating man looks away. A man who has not yet decided which he is holds your eyes and lets you see him not deciding.

Elias had not received a tactical annotation from me in four days. I had watched his patrol reports come across the desk of the runner who transported them — I still knew every runner's route — and I had seen the shape of them change already. Timings slipping by ten and fifteen minutes. Boundary notations getting vague. He had built his command around my margins for two years, and my margins were gone.

He knew.

He did not yet know what he was going to do about knowing. But he was not pretending, and that was information.

I dipped the cloth again. When I looked up, the arch was empty.

That night, I did not hear about the runner.

I heard about him the way I heard about most things now — by absence. Bradley did not sleep. I knew because the pack house creaks in a specific pattern when the Alpha's chamber is occupied and still, and I heard that pattern from midnight until nearly four. I heard a servant sent down to the kitchens twice for water. I heard boots on the eastern staircase — a border guard, come up to report and sent back down without the answer he had come for.

Something had arrived at the eastern line. Something Bradley could not answer. Something he could not bring to me because bringing it to me would require admitting he needed to.

I lay on the narrow cot with my hands folded across my sternum and I listened to my former mate not sleep, and I understood the shape of what had happened without needing the words for it. A rogue runner. A name asked for. The mind-link severed. The Accord already testing itself against the vacuum where I used to be.

I closed my eyes. I did not smile. But something behind my ribs — the quiet enormous thing that had heard me the night of the banquet — turned over once in its sleep and settled.

Leona brought the dress at seven.

Omega gray. Coarse weave. No jewelry. No rank insignia. She laid it across the cot with the same precision she used to adjust the vase in the front hall each morning, and she stepped back and waited for me to react to it.

I stood. I lifted the dress. I dressed without comment.

She watched. When I had smoothed the last fold at my waist, she turned toward the door.

"Leona."

She paused. Her hand on the handle.

I spoke in the register I had used at strategy tables — the low, level tone that carried without effort and invited no interruption.

"Has Bradley reviewed the Silverfang Pack's current territorial sensitivities before the dinner tonight? Specifically the northern river dispute. Alpha Voss has been waiting six months for a mediated proposal. I would want to know it has been prepared before the toasts begin."

She did not turn around.

She stood very still with her hand on the door, and I watched the small muscles at the base of her neck lock as she processed the fact that she did not know what I was talking about. Northern river. Six months. Mediated proposal. None of it was in any document she had ever read, because none of it had ever been on paper — it had lived in my head and in Marcus Voss's quiet correspondence with me, and no one at the head table tonight was going to know it existed until it wasn't there.

Leona did not answer.

She opened the door and left, and her footsteps down the corridor were, for the first time, not quite in her measured cadence.

I sat on the cot in the gray dress.

Tonight would go exactly as I had calculated.
