Chapter 1

Ten years.

Ten years of standing beside Alpha Trevor Marshall, and I still couldn't tell you the exact moment I stopped mattering to him. Maybe it was gradual. Maybe it happened all at once, the way a bone breaks — one clean snap you don't feel until the shock wears off.

Tonight, I think I finally felt it.

The storm had been building since afternoon, the kind that rolls in low and mean over Silver Moon territory, turning the sky the color of a bruise. I'd spent the day in the infirmary — routine checks, a warrior's sprained shoulder, a pup with a fever — telling myself that Trevor would be home by evening. That he'd remember what tonight was. Ten years. A decade of this bond, this life, this pack.

He didn't come home.

I found out where he was the way I always found out things about my own mate — secondhand, through a pack member's carefully averted eyes. Emely. The storm was upsetting her pregnancy, apparently. She needed him.

I stood in the rain for a long time before I went inside. I'm not sure why. Maybe I thought the cold would make me feel something other than the hollow ache that had taken up permanent residence behind my sternum. My wolf, Sera, didn't even stir. She'd been quiet for months now — not gone, just... folded inward, like an animal that had learned to make itself small.

I was soaking wet when I walked through the pack house doors. Water dripping off my hair, my clothes plastered to my skin, mud on my boots. I should have gone straight upstairs.

I didn't make it three steps.

"Madison."

Trevor's voice cut across the entrance hall. He was standing near the common room doorway, dry and composed, a glass of something amber in his hand. Behind him, I could see the warm glow of the fireplace, hear the low murmur of pack members gathered inside. Emely was somewhere in that warmth. I could smell her perfume from where I stood.

"You left Emely unattended this afternoon." His voice carried the particular flatness that meant he'd already decided how this conversation ended. "She was distressed. The whole pack noticed your absence."

I opened my mouth. Closed it.

"Apologize."

The Alpha tone hit me like a hand pressed flat against my chest. Not a request. A command, wrapped in that specific frequency that bypassed rational thought and went straight for the part of every pack member's brain wired to submit. I felt Sera flinch somewhere deep inside me — a small, wounded sound, like something tearing.

I apologized. Standing there in my soaked clothes, in front of half the pack, I apologized for leaving Emely Carlson unattended on my tenth mate anniversary.

Trevor nodded once, satisfied, and turned back toward the fireplace.

I went upstairs.

---

The miscarriage started around midnight.

I knew the signs by now. This was the third time. My body had its own terrible vocabulary for this particular grief, and I recognized every word of it.

I reached for the mind-link. Trevor. Trevor, I need you. I'm — something's wrong, please —

Blocked. The connection met a wall and bounced back, hollow.

I tried again. And again. Each attempt came back empty, and through the thin walls of the pack house I could hear, faintly, laughter from the east wing. Emely's wing. The sound of Trevor's voice, low and warm in a way it hadn't been with me in years.

I lay on the floor of our dark bedroom and handled it alone.

Sera went completely silent somewhere in the small hours of the morning. Not the folded-inward quiet of recent months — something deeper. Final. I felt the absence of her like a missing tooth, a space where something vital used to be.

I think we both understood, in that moment, that there would be no pups. Not now. Not ever. My body had made its decision, and the Moon Goddess, if she was watching, had made hers.

I didn't cry. I was too tired to cry.

---

I dragged myself to the infirmary at dawn for supplies. That was all I intended — gauze, medication, enough to manage what my body was still working through. A healer treating herself because there was no one else.

Trevor's office door was cracked open as I passed.

I should have kept walking.

"— honestly, it was almost too easy." Emely's voice, light and amused. "Madison always needed to believe she was protecting someone. I just gave her something to protect."

I stopped.

"The medical board never looked twice at her record after that." A pause, the soft clink of a cup being set down. "Ten years, and she still thinks it was her fault."

Trevor's voice, when it came, was perfectly calm. "She was a convenient shield. The pack needed stability. She provided it."

Convenient.

The word landed somewhere below my ribs and just... stayed there.

I stood in the hallway outside my mate's office and listened to him explain, in the same tone he used for pack logistics, exactly how he had used me. How he had always known. How he had chosen, deliberately and without hesitation, to let me carry a guilt that was never mine.

Sera didn't whimper. She didn't flinch.

For the first time in months, she lifted her head.

And something in me — the last thread, the one I hadn't even known I was still holding — went very, very quiet.

Then it snapped.
