Chapter 2

The first week, I learned what it meant to be wolfless.

Not the abstract kind of knowing—the way you know facts from books or stories. The physical kind. The kind that sits in your chest like a stone and refuses to move.

I tried to shift on the third night. I was cold, soaked from rain that hadn't stopped since I crossed the border, and I thought maybe—maybe—if I could just reach the wolf, she would answer. She'd been silent since the rejection, but silence wasn't the same as gone.

I knelt in the mud beneath an oak tree and reached inward the way I'd done a thousand times before.

Nothing.

Not even an echo. Just the hollow space where she used to be, and the awful certainty that I was alone inside my own body.

I stayed on my knees until my legs went numb. Then I crawled into the hollow at the base of the oak and pressed my back against the wood. My hands were shaking. They wouldn't stop. I tried to prepare the wolfsbane extract I'd stolen—three vials, carefully packed—but my fingers couldn't grip the seal.

I sat there in the dark and watched my hands tremble like they belonged to someone else.

Eventually I pressed my thumb against the inside of my wrist. The old grounding habit. It didn't ground me. But it gave me something to focus on that wasn't the shaking or the cold or the fact that my father was dead and I had nowhere to go.

When the shaking finally stopped, I made myself stand up.

I had herbalist's knowledge. Six years of alliance-brokering instincts that taught me how to read people and situations. The extract. And I was still breathing.

That had to be enough.

I started walking east.

A traveling Delta had mentioned a border clinic once, months ago, during one of Ironclaw's trade meetings. A place on the edge of the Eastern Realm where they didn't ask questions and paid in food and shelter for skilled hands. I hadn't paid much attention at the time. Now I tried to remember every detail.

It took me four days to find it.

The clinic was smaller than I'd imagined—a low stone building with a patched roof and narrow windows, tucked between a human settlement and the treeline. The sign above the door was faded but legible: Sera's Healing House.

I stood outside for a long time before I went in.

Inside, the air smelled like antiseptic and dried herbs. A she-wolf with sharp eyes and greying hair looked up from a worktable covered in bandages.

"Help you?" she asked.

My voice came out steadier than I expected. "I'm looking for work. I have healing knowledge. Herbalist training."

She studied me. I knew what she saw: gaunt, wolfless, carrying nothing but the clothes on my back and a grief I couldn't hide no matter how straight I held my spine.

"You got a name?"

"Chloe."

She waited. When I didn't offer more, she nodded once. "Sera. You know wolfsbane compounds?"

"Yes."

"Silver-fragment wounds?"

"Yes."

Sera pointed to a cot in the corner. A young warrior lay there, unconscious, his shoulder wrapped in bloodstained bandages. "Three healers tried to close that wound. Infection's spreading faster than we can fight it. Silver fragment's still in there somewhere, too small to extract without tearing him apart."

I crossed to the cot and unwrapped the bandages. The wound was angry and hot, the edges blackened. I could smell the silver poisoning beneath the infection.

Something cold and familiar settled in my chest.

I prepared the poultice from memory. Wolfsbane root, ground fine. Silverleaf extract to draw out the poison. Yarrow to close the tissue. I worked quickly, my hands steady now that they had purpose.

Twenty minutes later, I pressed the poultice into the wound and rewrapped it with clean bandages.

"Change it every six hours," I said. "The fragment will work its way to the surface in two days. Don't try to pull it out before then."

Sera watched me the entire time. When I finished, she gestured to an empty cot near the back wall.

"That's yours. As long as you want it."

I nodded. I didn't say thank you. I didn't trust that the offer wouldn't be revoked the moment I showed gratitude.

I just took the cot and lay down and closed my eyes.

Months passed.

I developed a routine. Treating wounds. Preparing antivenoms. Teaching Sera's apprentices the herb properties I'd memorized since childhood. I didn't share my surname. I didn't discuss my wolf. When patients asked why I didn't shift to speed my own healing from minor cuts and burns, I told them I preferred to conserve energy.

Sera never asked.

The work was its own small mercy. Each day I was useful, I was a little harder to destroy. I could measure my value in closed wounds and saved lives. It wasn't the same as being whole. But it was something.

At night, though, the silence was absolute.

I would lie on my cot and reach for the space where my wolf should be, and there was nothing. Just the hollow. Just the cold.

I pressed my thumb against my wrist and waited for morning.

One afternoon in late spring, Sera looked up from her worktable and said, "You're good at this."

I was grinding silverleaf root into powder. I didn't stop. "Thank you."

"You're better than good. You've got instincts I can't teach." She paused. "Where'd you train?"

"Nowhere formal. I learned from necessity."

Sera nodded slowly. She didn't push.

That night, I dreamed of Patrick's hands going cold in mine. I woke with my thumb pressed so hard against my wrist that it left a mark.

I got up. Checked the supply cabinet. Reorganized the wolfsbane compounds by potency.

When Sera found me two hours later, she didn't say anything. She just handed me a mug of tea and went back to her own cot.

I held the mug until it went cold.

The routine held. The silence didn't lift. But I kept breathing.

That had to be enough.

Then one morning, the wind shifted.

I was outside the clinic, hanging bandages to dry, when I felt it—a presence at the edge of my awareness. Not a scent. Not a sound. Just the weight of being watched by something far more powerful than I was.

I turned.

A man stood at the treeline. Tall, dark-haired, perfectly still. His eyes were fixed on me with an intensity that made my breath catch.

I didn't recognize him.

But something deep in the hollow space where my wolf used to be—something I thought was dead—stirred.

Just once.

Then went silent again.

The man didn't move. Neither did I.

Sera's voice came from the clinic door. "Chloe? You all right?"

I blinked. When I looked back at the treeline, the man was gone.
