Chapter 4

Alaina found me in the Silvercrest healer's quarters two weeks after I arrived.

I was sitting on the examination table, staring at the wall. She knocked once, then entered without waiting for permission. That was Alaina—she knew when asking would give you time to refuse, and she didn't ask.

She set a folder on the table between us. Thick. Papers clipped together. Charts.

"I've been documenting your symptoms," she said.

I looked at the folder. I didn't open it.

Alaina pulled up a chair and sat. She opened the folder herself, spreading the pages out so I could see them. Charts tracking tremor patterns. Temperature spikes. Notes written in her precise handwriting.

"The tremors started three days after you crossed the Ironveil border," she said. Her voice was calm. Clinical. "They occur in clusters. Always at night. Always accompanied by elevated body temperature and pressure behind the sternum."

I pressed my palm against the scar on my ribs. The habit I couldn't break.

Alaina noticed. She always noticed.

"Skylar," she said gently. "This isn't the rejection wound. And it's not illness."

I looked at her.

"It's emergence," she said.

The word hung in the air between us.

"Your wolf isn't absent," Alaina continued. "She was suppressed. The silver-blade trauma you sustained as a teenager—that was the initial trigger. But it was compounded by years of exposure to Bradley's Alpha tone. Every time he used it on you, it reinforced the cage."

I stared at the charts. The tremor patterns. The heat signatures.

"The bond-shock from the rejection cracked the suppression," Alaina said. "Your wolf is waking up."

I didn't say anything for a long time.

Alaina waited. She was good at waiting.

Finally, I spoke. My voice came out quieter than I intended.

"When?"

Alaina's expression shifted. Not pity. Something closer to respect.

"Soon," she said. "And it will not be gentle."

I nodded slowly. I looked down at my hands. They were steady. They shouldn't have been.

"What do I do?" I asked.

Alaina reached across the table and touched my wrist. Her fingers were warm.

"You survive it," she said. "And we'll be here when you do."

---

That night, I couldn't sleep.

I lay in the guest quarters and stared at the ceiling. The tremors came again. Stronger this time. My skin felt too tight. The pressure behind my sternum built until I couldn't breathe through it.

I got up and walked to the window.

The Silvercrest compound was quiet. Moonlight spilled across the training grounds. I pressed my forehead against the glass and tried to remember what it felt like to have a wolf.

I couldn't.

I'd spent so long believing I was wolfless that the idea of her waking up felt impossible. Like being told you had a second heart you'd never felt beating.

But Alaina didn't lie.

I pressed my palm against the scar on my ribs and closed my eyes.

---

The war room was empty when I arrived the next evening.

Dominic had called a strategy session earlier, but the council had already dispersed by the time I got there. I found him alone, standing at the head of the table, studying the territorial map.

He looked up when I entered. His gaze was steady. Unhurried.

"Skylar," he said.

I crossed to the table. The map was marked with new scout reports. Rogue movements radiating outward from Ironveil's collapsed borders.

I stood beside him and studied the marks. My fingers traced the eastern perimeter.

"They're getting bolder," I said.

Dominic nodded. "Caden's patrols intercepted three incursions this week. They're testing our defenses."

I pressed my palm against the scar on my ribs. The tremor was building again. I tried to ignore it.

Dominic's gaze shifted. He was looking at my hand. At the scar beneath it.

"That scar," he said quietly. "I know where you got it."

I went very still.

He didn't move closer. He just stood there, his voice low and deliberate.

"The rogue ambush. Neutral territory. You were sixteen. You put yourself between me and a silver blade."

I looked at him. At the scar on his jaw. The one I'd noticed the first day I arrived.

"I looked for you afterward," Dominic said. "I didn't know which pack you belonged to. I didn't know your name. But I never forgot what you did."

He paused. His jaw tightened.

"I owe you a debt I have not found a way to repay."

I stared at the scar on his jaw for a long moment. Then I looked back at the map.

"We are even, then," I said.

Dominic's expression shifted. Something unreadable passed through his eyes.

The distance between us closed by a fraction. Neither of us acknowledged it.

We stood there in silence, side by side, studying the map of a territory neither of us could save alone.

Finally, Dominic spoke.

"When your wolf emerges," he said, "you will not face it alone."

I didn't answer. I didn't need to.

I pressed my palm against the scar on my ribs one more time.

And for the first time since I crossed the Ironveil border, I let myself believe that something inside me was still alive.
