When My Alpha Betrayed Me for a Younger She-Wolf Chapter 1

The bond broke at 10:14 on a Tuesday night.

I knew the exact moment because I was looking at Bradley when he did it. I was standing on the ceremonial platform in the Luna cloak—the first time in seven years I'd worn it publicly—and his hand was already on my shoulder. Three hundred wolves filled the Ironveil pack house below us. The air smelled like pine smoke and expectation.

I had let myself believe it this time. Seven years of waiting, and tonight he would finally speak the bonding vow. Tonight the mark would be made. Tonight I would stop being the unmarked Luna everyone pretended not to notice.

I was carrying his pup. I hadn't told him yet. I was going to tell him after the ceremony, when we were alone, when the bond was sealed and I could finally stop holding my breath.

Bradley's hand tightened on my shoulder. But instead of turning me toward him, he pulled.

The ceremonial Luna cloak slid from my shoulders.

I blinked. The fabric pooled at my feet. Cold air hit my bare arms.

"Bradley?" My voice came out quiet. Confused.

He didn't look at me. He was looking past me, toward the edge of the platform.

Alyssa Green stood there in a white dress, her hands clasped in front of her, her expression carefully surprised. She was twenty-one. She'd been interning at the pack house for three months. I'd helped her carry files once.

Bradley lifted the Luna cloak—my cloak, the one I'd waited seven years to wear properly—and draped it over Alyssa's shoulders.

The hall went silent.

I couldn't move. I was still standing in the center of the platform, arms bare, staring at the back of Bradley's head as he adjusted the cloak around Alyssa's neck.

"Her scent," Bradley said, his voice carrying across the silent hall, "calls to me more deeply."

Something inside my chest lurched. Not my heart. Something else. Something I'd never felt before.

Bradley turned to face the assembled pack. His hand was still on Alyssa's shoulder. He didn't look at me.

"I, Bradley Mason, Alpha of Ironveil," he said, his voice formal, ceremonial, practiced, "reject you, Skylar Hill, as my mate and Luna."

The bond shattered.

It felt like cracking ice. Like something frozen splitting down the center, jagged and sharp and cold. It tore through my chest, through my ribs, through the place where the bond had lived for seven years—unmarked, unfinished, but there.

I gasped. My knees buckled.

Inside me, something slammed against a cage. Hard. A presence I didn't know existed. A scream that didn't reach my throat.

Then the pain hit.

Not the bond-ache. Something lower. Something visceral.

I looked down. Blood was pooling beneath my feet, dark and spreading fast across the ceremonial platform.

I was losing the pup.

I collapsed. My palms hit the wood. The blood kept coming. I couldn't stop it. I couldn't breathe. The bond-ache pulsed through me in waves, and beneath it, the cramping, the tearing, the thing inside me that was dying because the bond died first.

Three hundred wolves stared in frozen silence.

Bradley's Beta—Gareth—flinched. One visible moment of hesitation. His mouth opened like he was going to speak.

Bradley's head snapped toward him. "Silence."

The Alpha tone rolled through the hall like a physical force. Every wolf in the room went rigid. Gareth's jaw locked. His hands clenched at his sides, but he didn't move.

I was still on my hands and knees in the blood.

Bradley stepped over me.

He didn't look down. He walked past me like I was a piece of furniture, his boots leaving prints in the blood, and stopped in front of Alyssa. He tilted her neck. She leaned into it, her eyes half-closed, her lips parted.

He bit down.

The mark flared. I felt it through the shattered bond—a distant, wrong echo of what should have been mine. Alyssa gasped. Her hands came up to grip Bradley's shoulders. He held her there, his teeth in her neck, sealing the bond I'd waited seven years for him to give me.

The hall stayed silent.

I pressed my palm flat against my ribs. The old silver-blade scar. The one I got shielding someone else. My hand was shaking.

Someone pushed through the crowd. Alaina. She didn't ask permission. She just shoved past the paralyzed wolves, climbed onto the platform, and pulled me up. My legs didn't work. She half-carried me off the platform, through the hall, past three hundred frozen faces.

Simone was standing among the warriors. Her whole body was shaking, fighting the Alpha tone. Her claws were half-extended. Her eyes tracked me as Alaina carried me past.

Alaina brought me to the healer's wing and laid me on a cot. She worked fast, her hands steady, her face blank. Simone appeared in the doorway, her claws still out, and stationed herself there like a guard.

I lay on the cot and stared at the ceiling. The bond-ache pulsed. The cramping was fading now. There was nothing left to lose.

I pressed my palm against the scar again. I couldn't stop doing it.

Then I heard Bradley's voice through the wall.

He was in the corridor outside, talking to Gareth. His tone was clipped. Unburdened.

"I kept her for seven years because her aura was the only thing holding the borders," Bradley said. "Without it, we would've been overrun. But we're strong enough now. I don't need the barrier anymore."

The barrier.

That's what I was.

Seven years. The unmarked bond. The waiting. The belief that he loved me, that he was just cautious, that the ceremony would come when the time was right.

He called me the barrier.

I sat up.

Alaina's hands were still on my arm, checking my pulse. "Skylar, you need to—"

"Out," I said.

My voice was quiet. Quieter than it should have been. But something in it made Alaina's hands stop.

Simone turned from the door, her eyes sharp. "Sky—"

"Out," I said again.

I swung my legs off the cot. My dress was still bloodstained. My arms were bare. I stood.

Simone stepped in front of the door. "You can't go out there like this."

I met her gaze. I didn't say anything.

She held my stare for three seconds. Then she stepped aside.

I walked through the healer's wing door, into the corridor. Bradley and Gareth were gone. The hall was empty. I walked through it. My feet left faint prints on the floor—blood, still drying.

Every wolf I passed stepped aside. They didn't know why. Something in my face cleared the path.

I walked through the pack house, through the main doors, across the courtyard. The sky was starting to lighten. Dawn.

I reached the territory line.

I stopped. My toes were at the edge. One more step and I'd be outside Ironveil's borders.

I thought about the seven years. The bond I honored when he didn't. The aura I gave freely while he called me a barrier.

I thought about the pup I lost on the platform.

I stepped over the line.

The moment my foot touched the ground outside Ironveil, I felt it. My aura—pulling back. Withdrawing. Like a hand letting go of something it had held for too long.

Behind me, inside the territory, I heard a faint sound. A crack. The wards.

I didn't look back.

I kept walking. And in my head, I carried every patrol route, every ward vulnerability, every settlement location I'd memorized over seven years.

Bradley never thought to protect that knowledge.

He never believed I'd leave.
