Chapter 3

I saw it happen during the Thursday morning briefing.

Madelynn stood at the front of the conference room, presenting her quarterly intern review. Standard stuff — patient contact hours, research observations, continuing education credits. But halfway through the slide on protocol compliance, Damon's phone buzzed. He glanced down. His expression shifted.

"Madelynn, could you clarify the incident resolution numbers here?"

Her hand went to her collarbone. Just a flutter of fingers against skin. "Of course. I—" She stopped. Blinked twice. "I'm sorry, I know these numbers reflect some learning moments for me."

Learning moments. Not errors. Not violations.

"My father always said mistakes were just opportunities wearing disguises." Her voice caught slightly on the word father. "He taught me that the best researchers are the ones who acknowledge gaps in their knowledge."

Damon's face softened. I watched it happen in real time. The furrow between his brows smoothing out. The phone set down.

"Hector was right," he said quietly. "Continue."

Madelynn's hand dropped from her collarbone. She finished the presentation. Her voice never wavered again.

I sat three seats down and understood with perfect, nauseating clarity that I was watching someone who had practiced this. Who knew exactly which words to deploy and when. Who understood that Damon's grief was a button she could press whenever she needed the room to tilt in her favor.

And that he would let her. Every single time.

After the meeting, I stayed in my seat while the others filed out. Petra paused at the door.

"Dr. Ellis?"

"I'm fine. Just reviewing my notes."

She nodded and left. I sat there staring at my blank legal pad and thinking about architecture. About how you could build a structure so slowly that no one noticed until it was load-bearing.

***

Two days later, I was running spectral analysis on the new compound batch when I saw her.

Madelynn. Through the glass wall that separated my lab from the main R&D corridor. She was at Terminal 7 — the one that accessed the proprietary research database. The one that required both badge authorization and thumbprint verification.

She was logged in.

I set down my pipette and walked to the corridor. Kept my pace normal. She didn't look up until I was standing directly behind her.

"Working late?" I said.

She startled. Just slightly. "Dr. Ellis. Yes, I'm just — Damon asked me to pull some reference materials for the quarterly report."

The screen showed the clinical trial master file directory. Level 4 clearance. I had Level 4 clearance. Damon had Level 4 clearance. Three other senior researchers had Level 4 clearance.

Interns did not have Level 4 clearance.

"Which references?" I kept my voice even.

She clicked out of the directory. Too fast. "The Phase II outcome summaries. For the board presentation."

"Those are Level 2 files. You're in Level 4."

"Oh." She smiled. Apologetic. Slightly confused. "I must have clicked wrong. These systems are so complicated."

I reached past her and tapped the screen. Pulled up the access log. Her badge number appeared seventeen times in the past month. All Level 4 directories. All outside standard business hours.

"Madelynn."

"I should go," she said quickly. "I have an early shift tomorrow."

She logged out and left. I stood there looking at the empty terminal and feeling my pulse in my throat.

Then I went to find Petra.

***

Petra's office was a converted storage room on the third floor. No windows. File cabinets that locked. A desktop computer that never touched the network.

She listened while I explained what I'd seen. Didn't interrupt. When I finished, she opened her bottom drawer and pulled out a folder.

"She's been in the system forty-three times in six weeks," Petra said. "Always after hours. Always Level 4 directories. Every access flagged by the system and every flag overridden by the same authorization code."

"LX-1."

"Yes."

I looked at the printed logs. Dates. Times. File paths. All documented in Petra's careful handwriting.

"Why haven't you reported this?"

Petra's mouth thinned. "I did. To Mr. Larson directly. He said Madelynn was conducting research for a special project and that her access was appropriate."

"What special project?"

"He didn't specify. Said it was confidential." She closed the folder. "Dr. Ellis, I've worked in pharmaceutical compliance for twenty-six years. This pattern — it's not research. It's something else."

I took the folder. "May I?"

She hesitated. Then nodded. "Make copies. Keep them somewhere safe. And Dr. Ellis? Be careful."

I went home and scanned every page. Saved the files to an encrypted drive I kept in my apartment safe. The same safe that held my parents' death certificates and the deed to their house and the photograph of me at eighteen, before the fire, when I still looked like someone who believed the world was a place where people protected you.

Then I poured a glass of wine and sat on the couch and waited for Damon to come home.

He didn't. He texted at eleven: *Late meeting. Don't wait up.*

I finished the wine. Went to bed.

And lay there in the dark, listening to the quiet hiss that was getting louder.
