Chapter 4

The tremor started during morning rounds.

I was reviewing Patient 8's latest bloodwork when my left hand began to shake. Just a flutter. Then my vision blurred at the edges. I set down the tablet and excused myself.

The pharmaceutical storage wing was two floors down. My badge beeped green at the secure door. I moved fast but not fast enough to draw attention. The hallway stretched longer than it should have.

I rounded the corner and stopped.

Madelynn stood at the storage room door. Her badge was already against the reader. The lock clicked open.

"Madelynn."

She turned. Smiled. "Dr. Ellis. I was just—"

"That's my medication storage."

"I know. Damon asked me to check inventory levels for the quarterly report." She held up her phone like evidence. "He sent the request an hour ago."

My hands were shaking harder now. The blur at the edges of my vision was spreading inward. "Move."

She didn't.

"Madelynn. Move."

"I really should complete the inventory first. It'll only take—"

I pushed past her. Not hard. Just enough. She made a small sound of protest but stepped aside.

The storage room was cold and fluorescent-bright. I went straight to the secure cabinet. Entered my code. The drawer slid open.

Four vials.

Still four vials.

I took one with shaking hands. Broke the seal. The injection site on my upper arm was already marked from this morning's reduced dose. I administered the medication standing up. Didn't bother with the bathroom.

Behind me, Madelynn said nothing.

I threw the empty vial in the sharps container and turned around.

She was at Terminal 4. The one mounted on the storage room wall for inventory tracking. But the screen didn't show inventory. It showed the clinical trial database. Level 4 access. My research files open in a cascade of windows.

And a small black external drive plugged into the USB port.

"What are you doing?"

Madelynn's hand moved to close the windows. Too slow. I crossed the room in three steps and grabbed her wrist.

"Don't touch me," she said.

I pulled her hand away from the keyboard. Hit print screen. The image capture flashed.

The terminal showed everything. File directory paths. Transfer progress bars. Sixteen hundred files copying to external storage. My molecular models. My trial protocols. My synthesis methodologies. Eighteen months of proprietary research flowing onto a drive the size of my thumb.

I looked at the screen. Then at Madelynn.

Something in her face changed.

The soft confusion dropped away. The apologetic smile disappeared. What looked back at me was cold and flat and perfectly aware.

"You should sit down," she said quietly. "You just took your medication. You're not stable."

"Who are you giving this to?"

She reached past me and ejected the drive. Slipped it into her pocket. "I don't know what you think you saw."

"I saw you stealing my research."

"Did you?" She tilted her head. "Because what I saw was you having an episode. Confused. Aggressive. You grabbed me." She touched her wrist where I'd held it. "That'll bruise."

My medication was starting to work. The tremor was easing. My vision was clearing. And with the clarity came understanding.

She had planned this. The timing. The location. The witness-free storage room.

"Damon will believe me," I said.

"Will he?" Madelynn smiled. Not the soft, deferential smile she used in meetings. Something sharper. "The woman who's been increasingly unstable? Who accused me of taking her medication? Who's been acting paranoid and possessive?" She paused. "Or his mentor's daughter, who's been nothing but grateful and professional?"

I said nothing.

"You have no proof," she continued. "The access logs show my badge, yes. But Damon authorized that access. The files on this drive?" She patted her pocket. "They'll be gone in an hour. And if you make an accusation without evidence, you'll just sound desperate."

"Why?"

"Because you have everything." The words came out flat. Factual. "The brilliant researcher. The tragic backstory. The man who saved you. You didn't earn any of it. You just survived a car crash and let him build your entire life."

She moved toward the door.

"I worked three jobs through med school," she said quietly. "My father gave everything to his students and died with nothing. And you—" She stopped. "You don't even appreciate what you have."

She left.

I stood in the cold storage room and felt my hands steady. Felt my vision clear completely.

Then I pulled out my phone and took photographs. The terminal screen. The access logs. The file transfer history still cached in the system.

I sent the images to my encrypted drive.

And I went to find Petra.

Because Madelynn was right about one thing: I had no proof that would convince Damon.

But I had proof that would convince a federal prosecutor.

I just needed more of it.
