Chapter 2

The tremor started in my left hand during the budget meeting.

I was presenting Q3 projections for the clinical trial expansion when my fingers began to shake. Just a flutter at first. I set down the laser pointer and continued talking. By the time I reached the cost-benefit analysis slide, I had to grip the edge of the conference table.

Damon noticed. His eyes tracked from my white knuckles to my face. I kept my voice steady and finished the presentation.

The moment the room cleared, I headed for the pharmaceutical storage wing.

The secure cabinet required two-factor authentication — my badge and thumbprint. The lock clicked green. I pulled open the temperature-controlled drawer where my personal medication supply lived.

Four vials.

There should have been twenty-three.

I counted again. My vision was starting to blur at the edges, the early warning sign I'd learned to recognize six years ago. Four vials meant eight days at standard dosage. Maybe twelve if I stretched it dangerously thin.

I pulled up the dispensation log on the cabinet's tablet interface.

March 15th: 6 vials — Authorization: D. Larson — Recipient: M. Vasquez — Reason: Acute migraine treatment.

March 22nd: 8 vials — Authorization: D. Larson — Recipient: M. Vasquez — Reason: Stress-related symptoms.

April 3rd: 5 vials — Authorization: D. Larson — Recipient: M. Vasquez — Reason: General wellness support.

General wellness support.

I read it three times. The words didn't change.

My medication. The compound I'd spent two years developing because nothing else on the market addressed my specific clotting disorder. The treatment that kept me functional. That kept me alive.

Given away for general wellness support.

I took one vial. Administered the injection in the storage room's small bathroom. Watched my hands stop shaking in the mirror.

Then I went to find my fiancé.

***

Damon's office occupied the northeast corner of the fourteenth floor. Wall-to-wall windows. Herman Miller everything. The Hector Vasquez monograph on the shelf behind his desk.

His assistant waved me through. Damon was on a call but gestured for me to sit. I stood.

He wrapped up the conversation and smiled. "Hey. Good presentation this morning. The board loved the expansion timeline."

"Why is Madelynn Vasquez taking my medication?"

The smile held but something shifted behind it. "What?"

"Nineteen vials. Three separate authorizations. The last one was for 'general wellness support.'"

Damon set down his phone. "Araya, she was having severe migraines. I wanted to give her the best available treatment."

"The best available treatment for migraines is sumatriptan. Which costs forty dollars and doesn't require a custom pharmaceutical protocol."

"She's been under enormous stress—"

"So have I. It's my stress medication. Literally. I designed it for my blood disorder."

He stood and came around the desk. Reached for my hand. I didn't pull away but I didn't squeeze back either.

"I should have asked," he said quietly. "You're right. But Madelynn's been struggling and I just wanted to help. You have more compassion than anyone I know. I thought you'd understand."

There it was. The reframe. My objection transformed into a failure of empathy.

"I have four vials left," I said.

"We'll synthesize more. I'll put a rush on it."

"The synthesis takes three weeks. I have eight days."

Something flickered across his face. Concern, maybe. Or calculation. "Then we'll adjust your dosage temporarily. You've done it before."

I had. During the early trial phases when we were still calibrating concentrations. I'd stretched doses and tracked symptoms and pushed my body to its edges because that's what research required.

But that was my choice.

"Okay," I said.

Relief flooded his expression. He kissed my forehead. "Thank you for understanding. I'll make sure this doesn't happen again."

I nodded and left his office.

In the elevator down to R&D, I opened my phone and pulled up the dosage calculator. Ran the numbers three different ways. Four vials across three weeks meant dropping to sixty percent of therapeutic levels.

Manageable. Probably.

I saved the new schedule and told no one.

Madelynn appeared at my lab two days later.

She knocked on the glass door even though it was open. Waited for permission. She was good at that — the small gestures of deference that made you feel unreasonable for objecting to anything.

"Dr. Ellis? Do you have a moment?"

I looked up from the centrifuge. "What do you need?"

"Damon mentioned you're presenting at the International Pharmacology Conference next month. I was hoping I could sit in on your prep sessions. For learning purposes."

The conference presentation included eighteen months of proprietary research. Data that hadn't been published yet. Methodologies that were still patent-pending.

"That's not possible," I said. "The research is confidential until publication."

Her face fell. Just slightly. Just enough. "Of course. I understand. I just thought — since Damon said I could shadow you this quarter—"

"Damon said what?"

"That I should learn from the best. He's been so generous with mentorship opportunities." She smiled. "He talks about you all the time. How brilliant you are. How much you've overcome."

The centrifuge finished its cycle. The sudden silence felt very loud.

"I'll talk to Damon," I said.

She thanked me and left.

I stood there for a long time, watching the cell samples spin down, thinking about the architecture of small invasions. How they didn't announce themselves. How they arrived with smiles and deference and the borrowed authority of a man who kept giving pieces of your life away.

That night, Damon came home late. I was already in bed.

"Hey," he whispered. "You awake?"

"Yeah."

He undressed in the dark and slid in beside me. "Madelynn said you two talked today. About the conference."

I didn't say anything.

"I know the research is sensitive," he continued. "But she's Hector's daughter. He would have wanted her to have opportunities. And you're so far ahead of everyone else — sharing knowledge is how we honor the people who gave us ours."

I felt him settle into the pillow. Felt his breathing even out.

"I'm reducing my dosage," I said quietly.

"Hmm?"

"My medication. I'm at sixty percent of therapeutic levels. Because there wasn't enough left after Madelynn's general wellness support."

Silence. Then: "We'll fix it. I promise."

But he was already half asleep. Already moving past it.

I lay there in the dark and felt the slow leak continue. Not a pop. Not yet.

Just the quiet hiss of something that used to hold air.
