Chapter 4

The mind-link transmission hit me like a physical blow.

*Luna — Samara took Brinley — heading toward the cliffs —*

I was in the study when it came through. Clara's voice, shaking with panic. I didn't stop to think. I shifted mid-stride, my clothes tearing as I burst through the east wing window in wolf form and hit the ground running.

The forest blurred past me. My wolf — still dormant, still silent, but somehow lending me speed I'd never possessed before — drove my human legs faster than they should have been able to move. Branches whipped my face. My lungs burned. I didn't slow down.

The cliffs came into view through the trees.

Samara stood at the edge. The drop behind her was sheer — a hundred-foot fall onto rocks and shallow water that would kill on impact. She held Brinley against her chest with one arm, the child's small body rigid, her eyes wide and glassy.

Brinley wasn't crying. That was worse. Her wolf had gone completely silent inside her. I could feel it through the faint connection we shared — not a mate bond, but something deeper. The bond between a mother and a child who had chosen each other.

Roman emerged from the opposite treeline at the same moment I did. His wolf was out — a massive grey creature, Alpha-dominant, his aura flooding the clearing. But he shifted back immediately when he saw them. Stood there naked and human, his hands raised.

"Samara," he said. His voice was carefully controlled. "Put her down. We can talk about this."

Samara smiled. It didn't reach her eyes.

"We're done talking," she said. Her voice was soft. Reasonable. The same tone she'd used with the Omegas in the kitchen. "You've been talking for weeks, Roman. Making promises. Telling me you just need time. That you're handling it." She took a step closer to the edge. Brinley made a small, choked sound. "I'm done waiting."

I moved forward. Slowly. My hands were steady. My voice came out calm. "Samara. Look at me."

She turned her head. Met my eyes. And I saw it — the flat, cold calculation beneath the performance. This wasn't a breakdown. This was a negotiation. She'd planned every word.

"You want Roman," I said. "I understand. He's yours. The fated bond is real. I'm not fighting that anymore."

Roman's head snapped toward me. Through the dying bond, I felt his shock. His confusion.

I ignored him. Kept my focus on Samara. "But Brinley is terrified. Look at her. She's not crying because she's too scared to make a sound. That's not love. That's trauma."

Samara's smile thinned. "She's my daughter."

"You rejected her." My voice didn't rise. Didn't waver. "You walked away from a newborn and didn't look back for five years. That's not a mother. That's biology."

"And you're what?" Samara's voice sharpened. "A placeholder? You were keeping her warm until I came back. That's all you ever were, Roselyn. A substitute."

The words landed exactly where she'd aimed them. I felt them in my chest, in the cold scar on my neck, in the place where my wolf should have been.

But I'd spent three weeks building a case. I knew how to absorb damage and keep moving.

"Then prove it," I said. "Put her down. Walk away with Roman. I'll sign whatever you want. Full custody. Visitation. I'll disappear from Ironveil entirely. Just let her go."

Samara studied me. Her grip on Brinley tightened.

"No," she said. "You'll fight. You'll take this to the Council. I know you, Roselyn. You're already building a case. I've seen the way you watch me. The way you document everything." She took another step back. Her heel was inches from the edge now. "So here's what's going to happen. Roman is going to reject you. Out loud. The full vow. Before witnesses. And then he's going to commit to a Mate Ceremony. Tonight. Or I jump."

Roman went rigid. "Samara—"

"Say it." Her voice cracked. Not with grief. With rage. "Say the words, Roman. Prove you choose me. Prove I'm not just the fated mate you're too weak to reject."

I looked at Roman. At the man who had used our bond as a weapon. Who had frozen me in place while he marked another woman. Who had kept a den and a box of photographs and a name that was never mine to give.

He looked back at me. And I saw it in his face: he was going to do it.

Because he had never once made a real choice and stuck to it. Because managing the immediate crisis was the only thing he knew how to do. Because Brinley was five years old and standing at the edge of a cliff, and he would say anything to get her back.

"I, Roman Ashford, Alpha of Ironveil Pack," he began. His voice was steady. Formal. The words of the rejection vow, spoken with the weight of pack law behind them. "Reject you, Roselyn Voss, as my mate and Luna—"

Each word hit me like a blade.

I felt them through the bond — what was left of it. Felt the connection sever in real time, the hollow cold spreading through the mark on my neck, my wolf screaming inside me in a place I couldn't reach.

Roman kept speaking. "—and sever the bond between us, witnessed by the Moon Goddess and—"

Movement in the treeline. Fast. Low.

Beta Garrett launched himself at Samara from the left in a single brutal lunge. He hit her at the waist, his arms closing around Brinley, and rolled. Samara screamed. Her grip broke. Garrett tucked Brinley against his chest and slammed into the ground three feet from the edge, his body taking the impact.

Roman stopped mid-word.

Samara scrambled backward, her hands clawing at the dirt, her face twisted with fury. "No — no, you were supposed to finish — you were supposed to choose—"

I ran. Dropped to my knees beside Garrett. He handed Brinley to me without a word. She was shaking. Silent. Her eyes were open but she wasn't seeing anything.

I pulled her into my arms and pressed my face into her hair. "You're safe. I've got you. You're safe."

Her small body stayed rigid. Her wolf was still silent.

But she was breathing.

I looked up. Roman was standing at the cliff edge, staring at Samara. She was still on the ground, her chest heaving, her eyes wild.

"You didn't finish," she whispered. "You stopped. You always stop."

Roman didn't answer.

I stood. Brinley clung to me, her face buried in my shoulder. I looked at Garrett. He met my eyes and gave a single, deliberate nod.

Witness.

I turned and walked back toward the pack house. My legs were steady. My wolf was silent. The bond was dying — half-severed, the words spoken but not completed, a wound that would fester until it was finished.

But Brinley was in my arms.

And I had one more entry to add to my journal.

Evidence was evidence.

And Roman had just spoken the rejection vow before witnesses.
