Chapter 3

They were waiting in the lobby when I got back. My parents. Fisher and Rayna Tucker, sitting on the leather sofa near the elevator like they'd been planted there.

I stopped. Bear's leash went slack in my hand.

Fisher stood first. He had that look on his face — the one that meant he'd already decided what the conversation would be. Reasonable. Measured. Final.

"Elliana," he said. "We need to talk."

I didn't move. "How did you know I was here?"

"Damian called," Rayna said softly. She stayed seated, her purse in her lap, her hands folded over it. "He's worried about you."

I almost laughed. "Damian is worried."

"He told us what you're trying to do," Fisher said. His voice was calm. Controlled. "This lawsuit. These accusations. Elliana, you're making a mistake."

Bear pressed against my leg. I felt the weight of him, solid and warm.

"Let's go upstairs," I said.

Fisher shook his head. "We can talk here."

"No," I said. "We can't."

I walked to the elevator. After a moment, they followed.

The ride up was silent. Rayna watched the numbers climb. Fisher stared straight ahead. I kept my hand on Bear's head.

Inside my room, I set down my bag and turned to face them. Fisher closed the door and stood with his back to it. Rayna sat on the edge of the chair by the window.

"You can't do this," Fisher said. "You can't go after Damian like this. He's been good to us. He's been generous."

I stared at him. "Generous."

"He helped us with the mortgage last year," Fisher continued. "He got your mother's brother that job. He's been a friend to this family."

"He robbed me," I said.

Fisher waved a hand. "That was years ago. You were together. Couples share things. You can't just—"

"We were never married," I said. "The certificate was fake. He stole everything I had and left me with nothing."

"You're exaggerating," Fisher said. His voice was still calm. Still reasonable. "You're upset, and I understand that. But you need to be realistic. Damian has resources. Lawyers. Connections. If you push this, you're going to lose. And you're going to embarrass this family in the process."

I looked at my mother. She was crying. Quiet tears that slid down her cheeks without sound.

"Mom," I said.

She shook her head. "Why do you always have to make things so difficult?" Her voice was soft. Wounded. "After everything we've done for you. After everything we've sacrificed. You can't just let this go? You can't just keep the peace?"

"Keep the peace," I repeated.

"Yes," Rayna said. She leaned forward. "Damian made mistakes. We all make mistakes. But he's trying to move forward. He's trying to build a life. And you're dragging up the past like it's the only thing that matters."

I felt something crack open inside me. Something I'd kept closed for eight years.

"Did he call you?" I asked. "Or did you call him?"

Fisher shifted. "He reached out. He said you were in the city. He thought we should know."

"And you came," I said. "You dropped everything and came to the city to tell me to stop. To tell me to be quiet. To tell me to let it go."

"We came because we love you," Rayna said.

I looked at her. Really looked at her. At the tears. At the way her hands twisted the strap of her purse. At the way she looked at me like I was the problem that needed solving.

"When Damian took everything from me," I said quietly, "did you ever raise your voice at him? Did you ever tell him he was wrong?"

Fisher frowned. "That's not fair."

"Did you?"

Silence.

"You didn't," I said. "You never said a word to him. But you've said plenty to me. You've told me to be realistic. To be practical. To keep the peace. You've told me to be quiet."

"Because you're our daughter," Fisher said. "We can talk to you. We can't control what Damian does."

"You didn't even try," I said.

Rayna stood. "Elliana, please. You're being unfair. We've always supported you. We've always been there for you."

"No," I said. "You've been there for yourselves. You've been there for the mortgage payment. For the job. For whatever Damian could give you. But you've never once been there for me."

"That's not true," Rayna whispered.

I walked to the door and opened it. "I need you to leave."

Fisher didn't move. "You're making a mistake."

"Maybe," I said. "But it's mine to make."

"Elliana—"

"Leave," I said.

Rayna's tears came harder now. She looked at Fisher. He looked at me. Then he took Rayna's arm and walked her to the door.

At the threshold, he stopped. "When this falls apart," he said, "don't come to us."

"I won't," I said.

They left. I closed the door and locked it. I stood there for a long time, my hand on the knob, my forehead pressed against the wood.

Then I walked to the bed and sat down. Bear followed and laid his head on my knee. I scratched behind his ears and felt the shaking start.

I pulled out my phone. I called Arthur.

He answered immediately. "Hey."

"They came," I said. My voice cracked.

"Your parents."

"Yeah."

He didn't say anything. He just waited.

"Damian called them," I said. "They came to tell me to stop. To let it go. To keep the peace."

"What did you say?"

"I told them to leave."

Another pause. Then, quietly: "I'm sorry."

"They chose him," I said. "They've always chosen him. I just didn't want to see it."

"I know."

I closed my eyes. Bear's weight was warm and solid. Arthur's breathing was steady on the other end of the line.

"You're the bravest person I've ever known," Arthur said.

I didn't feel brave. I felt like I'd just cut off my own arm.

But I didn't say that. I just held the phone and listened to him breathe and let Bear press closer.

"I'm here," Arthur said. "I'm right here."

"I know," I whispered.

We stayed on the line until my breathing steadied. Until the shaking stopped. Until the room felt less empty.

And when I finally hung up, I didn't feel alone.
