Chapter 4

Miles called on Thursday morning.

"Damian filed a motion," he said. "He's claiming the brownstone transfer was a voluntary gift. He's trying to block your ownership claim before we even get to discovery."

I set down my coffee. "Will it work?"

"No." Miles sounded almost amused. "It's legally thin. Desperate. But it tells us he's taking you seriously. He's willing to fight dirty."

I looked out the hotel window at the city below. "Good."

"I'll prepare the counter-response. We'll tear this apart in forty-eight hours."

"Thank you, Miles."

I hung up. I opened my laptop and found the event page. Dior's birthday gala. Saturday night. A rooftop venue in SoHo. Public. Crowded. Perfect.

I copied the address and texted it to a contact.

Then I went shopping.

Saturday night, I stood in front of the mirror and studied myself. Black dress. Simple cut. No logos. My wedding ring caught the light. I pulled my hair back and fastened small diamond studs in my ears. I looked like someone who didn't need to prove anything.

I took a cab to SoHo. The rooftop was lit up like a stage. Music poured down to the street. I could see silhouettes moving against the glow.

I walked to the entrance. A man with a clipboard stood at the door.

"Name?"

"I'm not on the list."

He looked me over. "Then I can't let you in."

I pulled out my phone and showed him a photo. "I'm here to return something to Mr. Payne."

He hesitated. Then he stepped aside.

The rooftop was packed. Influencers. Business contacts. People who looked expensive and sounded loud. Dior stood near the center in a custom gown that probably cost more than most people's cars. Her laugh carried over the music. Damian stood beside her, one hand on her waist, smiling for a photographer.

I walked through the crowd. People glanced at me. Some looked twice. I didn't stop.

I walked straight to Damian.

He saw me coming. His smile froze.

"Elliana," he said. His voice was tight. "This is a private event."

"I know," I said.

Dior turned. Her eyes narrowed. "What are you doing here?"

I didn't answer her. I opened my bag and pulled out a folder. I handed it to Damian.

"What is this?" he asked.

I raised my voice. Not loud. Just clear. Carrying.

"On March 14th, eight years ago, I transferred $847,000 to your account," I said. "On April 2nd, I transferred another $320,000. On May 10th, I purchased the property at 428 West 17th Street for $1.2 million. The deed lists me as the sole owner."

The music seemed quieter now. People were turning. Phones were rising.

"You used a forged marriage certificate to claim joint ownership," I continued. "You transferred the property into your name. You built your company with my money. You've been living in my brownstone for eight years."

Damian's face went red. "This is insane. You can't just—"

"I'm not asking for a favor," I said. "I'm presenting an invoice. Two million dollars. Principal plus interest. I want it returned within thirty days."

The rooftop was silent now. Every eye was on us.

Damian laughed. It sounded like breaking glass. "She's confused," he said to the crowd. "We were together. This is ancient history. She's trying to embarrass me."

"I have receipts," I said. I pulled out another sheet and held it up. "Bank transfer records. Property deeds. A forensic analysis of the marriage certificate you used. It was never filed. It was never legal. Everything you took was theft."

Dior grabbed his arm. "Damian, handle this," she hissed.

"I am handling it," he snapped.

Someone in the crowd whispered. Someone else pulled out their phone. A camera flashed.

Damian's smile was gone now. His jaw was tight. "You need to leave."

"I'm already leaving," I said. I put the folder back in my bag. "But the invoice stands. Thirty days."

I turned and walked back through the crowd. People parted. No one spoke. I felt their eyes on my back.

I stepped into the elevator. The doors closed.

I exhaled.

Behind me, on the rooftop, the whispers started. Phones glowed. Dior's voice rose, sharp and furious. Damian was talking fast, trying to redirect, trying to laugh it off.

But the crack was already there.

And everyone had seen it.

I walked out onto the street and hailed a cab. I got in and gave the driver my hotel address. I leaned back against the seat and closed my eyes.

My phone buzzed. A text from Miles.

*I'm hearing things already. Well done.*

I didn't reply. I just watched the city lights blur past the window.

Somewhere above me, the party was still going. But it wasn't the same party anymore.

I'd made sure of that.
