Chapter 2

The hotel room was quiet. I spread the files across the desk in neat rows. Eight years of receipts. Bank transfer records. The brownstone deed with my name on it, clear as daylight. Miles's forensic report on the marriage certificate — the one that had never been real.

I didn't rehearse what I'd say. I just looked at the documents until they stopped feeling like pieces of paper and started feeling like weapons.

Outside the window, Manhattan glittered. Somewhere out there was the brownstone I'd paid for. The company Damian had built with my money. The life he'd stolen.

I closed the folder. I went to bed. I slept fine.

The next morning, I dressed simple. Jeans. A white shirt. My wedding ring. I pulled my hair back and looked in the mirror. I didn't look like someone who'd come to beg.

I looked like someone who'd come to collect.

The lobby of Damian's firm was all glass and steel. Polished floors. A receptionist behind a marble counter who looked up when I walked in. She had that city smile — bright and empty.

"Can I help you?"

"I'm here to see Damian Payne."

"Do you have an appointment?"

"No."

Her smile tightened. "Mr. Payne doesn't take walk-ins. If you'd like to leave your name—"

"Tell him Elliana Tucker is here."

Something flickered in her face. She picked up the phone. Murmured into it. Listened. Then she set it down and pointed to the elevator.

"Top floor."

I rode up alone. The elevator was mirrored. I watched myself rise.

The top floor was all windows. City views in every direction. A receptionist's desk sat outside a corner office with Damian's name on the door. The woman behind it waved me through without a word.

I opened the door.

Damian sat behind a desk the size of a small car. Floor-to-ceiling windows behind him. He looked up, and for a second, something crossed his face — surprise, maybe. Then it smoothed into that smile I remembered. The one that used to make me feel safe.

Dior was on the sofa by the window. She had a coffee in one hand and her phone in the other. When she saw me, she laughed.

"Oh my God. You actually came to the city." She looked me up and down. "Did you get lost on the way to the farmer's market?"

I didn't look at her. I walked to Damian's desk and set my folder down.

"We need to talk," I said.

Damian leaned back in his chair. "Elliana. This is a surprise. I thought you weren't interested in my generosity."

"I'm not here for generosity," I said. "I'm here as a creditor."

Dior snorted. "A what?"

I opened the folder. I took out the brownstone deed and placed it in front of Damian. Then the bank transfer records. Then the receipts.

"On March 14th, eight years ago, I transferred $847,000 to your account," I said. My voice was calm. Even. "On April 2nd, I transferred another $320,000. On May 10th, I purchased the property at 428 West 17th Street for $1.2 million. The deed lists me as the sole owner. You used a forged marriage certificate to claim joint ownership and transfer the property into your name after I left New York."

Damian stared at the papers. His smile was still there, but it looked painted on now.

"That's ancient history," he said. "We were together. Couples share things. You can't just—"

"We were never married," I said. "The certificate was fake. Miles Hathaway had it analyzed. It was never filed. It was never legal. Which means everything you took was theft."

Dior stood up. "Are you serious right now? You think you can just walk in here and—"

"I'm not talking to you," I said. I still didn't look at her.

Damian's jaw tightened. He picked up the deed, glanced at it, then tossed it back on the desk. "This is ridiculous. You gave me that money. You knew what you were doing."

"I gave it to you because I loved you," I said. "And you used it to destroy me. That's the difference."

"You can't prove any of this."

"I can prove all of it."

Damian stood. He pressed a button on his desk phone. "Sarah, call security."

I collected my papers. I slid them back into the folder. I looked at him across the desk.

"You're going to give it back," I said. "All of it. With interest."

Damian laughed. It sounded wrong. "You're delusional."

"I'll see you again soon," I said.

I walked to the door. Dior called after me, something sharp and ugly, but I didn't turn around.

I rode the elevator down. I walked through the lobby. I stepped out onto the street and the noise of the city hit me all at once — horns, voices, the hum of a million people moving.

I pulled out my phone and texted Miles.

*It's done. He knows I'm serious.*

His reply came instantly.

*Good. Let him sweat.*

I walked back to the hotel. I didn't feel angry. I didn't feel scared.

I felt clear.

Back in Damian's office, he stood at the window and stared down at the street. Dior was talking — something about calling a lawyer, about how I was crazy, about how he needed to shut this down.

He wasn't listening.

He was thinking about the deed. The transfers. The dates.

He was thinking about the ring on my finger.

And for the first time in eight years, Damian Payne felt something he didn't recognize.

Doubt.
