Chapter 4

The hidden door swung open with a soft creak, and Dex stepped into the narrow stairwell. His broad frame filled the entrance, blocking out the weak light from above, but his face wasn't twisted with the anger I'd expected. Instead, I saw something that made my stomach clench with unease—regret.

"Maren," he said quietly, his voice carrying none of the authority I was used to hearing from Ryker's Beta. "We need to talk."

I pressed myself further against the cold stone wall, the blood contract crackling against my ribs where I'd hidden it. "About what? About how you're going to drag me back upstairs so Ryker can punish me for snooping?"

Dex descended the steps slowly, his hands raised in a gesture of peace. In the weak beam of my flashlight, his usual confident demeanor was nowhere to be found. Instead, he looked like a man carrying the weight of terrible secrets.

"I'm not here to stop you," he said, reaching the bottom of the stairs. "I'm here because I should have told you the truth months ago."

My wolf stirred uneasily. "What truth?"

Dex ran a hand through his dark hair, his jaw clenched tight. "About Sloane. About what she's been doing to Ryker." He met my eyes, and I saw genuine pain there. "She's not his true mate, Maren. What he's feeling—it's not real."

The words hit me like a physical blow. "What are you talking about?"

"The night sweats. The way his scent changed. The sudden obsession with her." Dex's voice was barely above a whisper. "I've seen it before, in other packs. It's called mate confusion—and it can be artificially induced."

I stared at him, my mind reeling. "That's impossible."

"Is it?" Dex pulled out his phone, his fingers trembling slightly as he scrolled through what looked like a video gallery. "I've been documenting everything, waiting for the right moment to act. But after tonight, after what happened to you in the clearing..."

He found what he was looking for and turned the screen toward me. The video was grainy, clearly shot from a hidden vantage point, but the image was unmistakable. Sloane stood in Ryker's study, her elegant fingers crushing dried herbs into a fine powder. She moved with practiced efficiency, measuring the powder into a small vial before approaching the bar cart.

"This was taken three weeks ago," Dex said, his voice tight with suppressed anger. "She's been doing this for months."

On the screen, Sloane uncapped Ryker's favorite whiskey—the bottle he drank from every night before bed. She poured the powder into the amber liquid, swirling it gently until it dissolved completely. Then she recapped the bottle and placed it back exactly where it belonged, her movements so smooth and natural that anyone walking in would never suspect tampering.

"Moonsbane," I breathed, recognizing the herb from my studies of pack healing. "But that's used for treating mate bond rejection. It shouldn't cause..."

"When combined with other compounds, it can scramble a wolf's recognition system," Dex explained grimly. "Make them believe someone else is their destined mate. The effects are temporary, but with consistent dosing..."

The phone trembled in my hands as the full implications crashed over me. "How long have you known?"

Dex's face crumpled. "Too long. I should have acted sooner, should have found a way to warn you, but..."

"But what?" My voice cracked like a whip in the confined space.

"She has leverage," he admitted, his words barely audible. "My family... we weren't always loyal to the Mills pack. Before Ryker's father took over, we served another Alpha. One who wasn't as honorable as the Mills line."

I watched him struggle with the confession, saw the shame eating him alive.

"There are records. Financial transactions. Things that would destroy not just me, but my entire bloodline." His hands clenched into fists. "Sloane found them somehow. She's been using them to keep me silent."

The blood contract pressed against my ribs, its weight suddenly feeling heavier. "Dex, there's something else. Something bigger than just Ryker's manipulation."

I pulled the ancient document from my shirt, unfolding it carefully. His eyes widened as he saw the formal script, the official seals, the unmistakable stain of blood that had sealed whatever bargain this represented.

"Where did you find this?" he asked, his voice hollow.

"In Ryker's safe. It's got my name on it, but I never signed anything like this." I pointed to the most damning passage. "It talks about delivering someone with Thorne blood. About payment for protection rendered."

Dex scanned the document quickly, his face growing paler with each line. "This is a death contract," he whispered. "Whoever signed this... they sold you, Maren. To something that's not entirely wolf."

My blood turned to ice. "What do you mean?"

"The seals, the formal language, the blood binding—this isn't pack law. This is old magic. Ancient magic." He looked up at me, fear stark in his eyes. "Someone made a deal with creatures that predate our kind."

The implications crashed over me like a avalanche. Everything—my relationship with Ryker, my position in the pack, even my very existence here—had been orchestrated. I wasn't a mate. I wasn't even a person.

I was merchandise, waiting to be delivered.

"We have to expose this," I said, my voice steadier than I felt. "Both the contract and what Sloane's been doing. We have evidence now."

Dex shook his head frantically. "Maren, you don't understand. Sloane isn't acting alone. She's connected to the Blackwood family—one of the most powerful supernatural dynasties on the continent. If we move against her without absolute proof, without a perfect plan, they'll declare war on our pack."

He grabbed my shoulders, his grip desperate. "Give me time. Let me find a way to do this that won't get everyone we care about killed. A week, maybe two."

I stared at him, at this man who'd been my friend for seven years, who'd stood by and watched me suffer because he was too afraid to act. Part of me understood his position, even sympathized with it. But as I looked down at the blood contract in my hands, at the words that marked me for death, I knew something he didn't.

I didn't have weeks. I might not even have days.

"I'll think about it," I lied, carefully folding the contract and tucking it back into my shirt. "But I need to get out of here before Ryker comes back."

Dex nodded, relief flooding his features. "Thank you. I know this is hard, but if we're smart about this—"

His words were cut off by the sharp buzz of my phone. I pulled it from my pocket, my heart stuttering when I saw the message waiting.

Unknown number. Sent just moments ago.

*I know you took what doesn't belong to you. Return it before sunrise, or your wolf will sleep forever. —S*

The phone slipped from my numb fingers, clattering against the stone floor. Sloane knew. Somehow, impossibly, she knew exactly what I'd discovered and exactly where I was.

And she'd just declared war.
