Chapter 5

The weight of Sloane's threat pressed against my chest like a physical force, each word of her message burning itself into my memory. *Return it before sunrise, or your wolf will sleep forever.* Two hours until dawn. Two hours to decide whether I would surrender the blood contract and whatever terrible truth it contained, or face whatever consequences she had planned.

But I wasn't walking toward the packhouse. I wasn't going to grovel at Sloane's feet or beg for mercy I knew she'd never grant. Instead, my feet carried me toward the forest edge, toward the shadows where moonlight couldn't quite penetrate. My wolf stirred restlessly beneath my skin, and I knew with bone-deep certainty that I wasn't alone.

He stepped from the darkness like he'd been waiting for me all along. Caspian Voss moved with that same predatory grace I remembered, but something was different now. The casual confidence was gone, replaced by something sharper, more dangerous. His golden eyes locked onto mine before dropping to the blood contract clutched in my trembling hands.

The change in his expression was instant and terrifying.

"This is a blood印契约," he said, his voice cutting through the night air like a blade. For the first time since I'd met him, there was raw emotion in his tone—anger so pure and violent that it made my wolf whimper. "Who gave you this?"

I took a step back, suddenly aware of how alone we were, how far from help. "I found it. In Ryker's safe."

Caspian closed the distance between us in two swift strides, his hand extended. "Let me see it."

Every instinct screamed at me not to hand over the one piece of evidence that might explain my entire existence. But the fury radiating from him was so intense, so focused, that I found myself placing the ancient parchment in his outstretched palm.

He scanned the document with the speed of someone intimately familiar with such contracts, his jaw clenching tighter with each line. When he looked up, his golden eyes held a darkness that made my blood run cold.

"This isn't what you think it is," he said quietly, his voice deadly calm now. "This isn't a mating contract or even a simple debt agreement."

My throat felt dry as sand. "Then what is it?"

"A blood lineage transfer." The words fell between us like stones. "Whoever signed this didn't just sell your future—they sold your very essence. The power sleeping in your veins."

I stared at him, my mind struggling to process what he was saying. "What power? I'm just a pack wolf. I don't have any special abilities."

Caspian's laugh was bitter, humorless. "You healed from silver poisoning in minutes. Your wolf recognized me instantly despite never having met my kind before. And tonight, when you touched that silver blade, it didn't just stop burning you—it began to purify."

The memory crashed over me—the moment the silver had transformed from agony to warmth under my touch, the way the metal had seemed to sing in response to my blood. I'd been so focused on the miracle of survival that I hadn't questioned the impossibility of what had happened.

"That's not normal wolf behavior," Caspian continued, his voice growing softer but no less intense. "That's ancient bloodline magic. The kind that was supposed to have died out centuries ago."

My legs felt weak. "And Sloane wants to take it?"

"The contract allows for a complete transfer upon your twenty-fifth birthday." His golden eyes bored into mine. "How old are you, Maren?"

The question hit me like a physical blow. "Twenty-four. My birthday is next month."

Caspian stepped closer, close enough that I could feel the heat radiating from his skin, could smell that wild scent of pine and storm that made my wolf sing with recognition. His fingers found my chin, tilting my face up until I had no choice but to meet his gaze.

"Your bloodline doesn't belong to him," he said, his voice dropping to a whisper that somehow carried more weight than any shout. "And it doesn't belong to her."

He paused, his thumb tracing along my jawline with a gentleness that contradicted the fierce intensity in his eyes.

"Your wolf already knows who it belongs to."

My wolf responded instantly, throwing back her head in a silent howl that had nothing to do with pain and everything to do with recognition, with homecoming, with a rightness that terrified me more than any threat Sloane could make. But I couldn't trust this feeling, couldn't surrender to this connection that felt too much like destiny.

I jerked away from his touch, my hands shaking as I pressed them against my chest. "No. I won't be anyone's possession anymore. I won't be traded or sold or claimed like some prize."

Caspian's expression shifted, surprise flickering across his features. "Maren—"

"I don't care about ancient bloodlines or magical contracts or whatever cosmic joke this is supposed to be." My voice grew stronger with each word, fueled by seven years of being overlooked, manipulated, and betrayed. "I'm done being a pawn in other people's games."

For a moment, we stared at each other in the moonlit clearing, the air between us crackling with tension and unspoken possibilities. Then Caspian did something completely unexpected.

He smiled.

Not the predatory expression I'd expected, but something genuine and almost... proud?

"You're not a pawn, little wolf," he said, his voice carrying a note of admiration that made my chest tighten. "You're not even a player."

He took a step back, but his golden eyes never left mine.

"You're the board itself."

Before I could ask what he meant, the sound of howling echoed through the forest—multiple voices raised in harmony, growing closer by the second. My blood turned to ice as I recognized the pattern. Ryker's patrol, returning from their hunt.

I looked around frantically, expecting Caspian to melt back into the shadows, to disappear the way mysterious strangers always did in stories. But he remained exactly where he was, his stance relaxed, his expression almost anticipatory.

"You need to go," I whispered urgently. "They'll be here any minute."

Caspian's smile widened, showing teeth that seemed just a little too sharp in the moonlight.

"Let them come."
